Private houses refurbishments

In order to create a new space inside an existing apartment, the floor slab that separated the living-room from the attic has been partially demolished. Within the double height a complex piece of furniture was designed and installed. It is made of wood and metal profiles and it serves as a stair, a bookshelf, walkable slab and suspended desk. The suspended desk characterises the entire space with its light presence. Fir and white-painted metal combine with the blue linoleum used to pave the newly-created space.

I was asked to redesign the plans of an existing 300 sqm. villa in Sicily, in order to obtain more bedrooms and a pleasant and ordered layout for the two floorplans. The bedrooms are distributed along two corridors and each one has a walk-in wardrobe at its entrance. The bedroom space is conceived as a very intimate and peaceful space, with a 60 cm deep desk just below the window.

Collective housing projects

This competition was launched in Lombardy to build a design directory for high-performance, low-cost residential buildings. Both projects – the “residential tower” and the “slab” – meet several techincal requirements, i.e. sustainability, construction costs (1600 euros/sq m), floor area (5000 sq m) and dwelling types mixture. This residential slab features a southern façade with large loggias and a northern one with five emerging volumes, which allows to multiply the dwelling aspects. A central and naturally illuminated corridor leads to the flats. As to the tower project, the building complies with the required technical standards and its modular composition fits in a wide range of situations.

Estudio Farini Bresnick took part in an architecture competition for a complex with 20-30 flats, a nursery, commercial surfaces, a private garden and some parking in the small village of Veyrier, near Geneva. The housing layout is clear and very compact, and meets swiss “Minergie” energetic standards. The nursery is located in a separated, two-floor high part of the complex, and surrounded by green and protected playgrounds.

Urban design masterplans

Our proposal is intended as a hinge, a door and a landscape of memories. It’s a hinge because it creates a connection among several places: the new railway station, the business center, the old station transformed into a museum and Cividal historical centre (with its system of walls and public gardens). It is a door because it acts as a new threshold toward the city center for people coming from the state highway or by train. It is a landscape of memories because the exhibition spaces and the public ones blend into one another and create three significant places: a ‘hortus conclusus’, an open square and a ‘garden of walls’ which is a symbol of the WW1 trenches experience.

The area is enclosed between the southern border of the city and the Chiaravalle Abbey: it has the potential to act as a hinge between a very dense urban area and a beautiful piece of agricultural landscape, but it suffers nowadays from a deep state of neglect, with illegal settlements and unhealthful living conditions. Our proposal tackles this difficult situation through its masterplan: it combines a big and redesigned park with sport facilities and high-density low-rise mixed use buildings which gather along a pedestrian a slow traffic and pedestrian path.

Public buildings projects

The “Isola” neighborhood community center is planned to be built inside the new “Trees library” park, which opening is planned in 2017 within the new “Porta Nuova” masterplan. Our project stresses on flexibility, sustainability, reduced construction costs and on building a strong relationship with the surrounding area. It uses L-shaped walls which half-enclose each room, leaving the other two sides more open and undefined.

We were asked to work exclusively on façades and on some minor landscape arrangement. Internal spaces were not our scope of work, in fact, they have been designed quite irregularly; we therefore had to position windows randomly, sticking to a geometric grid and always using the same window size and type. We tilted the upper profile of the building, and bevelled one of its corners, to confer some unity to the whole volume.

Architecture exhibitions

The exhibition was organized at Milan Politecnico (Faculty of Architecture), and displayed the boards made by the “Details – Architecture seen in section” research group and by the architecture offices who participated to the project.I was part of the research group, together with my PhD supervisor Prof. O. S. Pierini. More info at www.detailsinsection.org

Graphics and renderings

The goal was to obtain eye-candy, clean, easy-to-use and up to date maps for the guide readers’ everyday use. This was achieved through a fine and complex re-drawing of several Milan city maps.

PhD research

The thesis claims that the wall has had a double nature from its very origins, being at the same time frame and continuous masonry. Hence, the dissertation also argues that the constructive and spatial characters of the wall are a synthesis of such duplicity, which makes it possible to go beyond the interpretations that label modernity as the ‘era of the frame’ and pre-modern times as the ‘era of masonry’, which supposedly con-cluded itself at the end of XIX century. While, on the one hand, the two natures of the wall have generated complexity and polysemy around it, they have also guaranteed its survival as idea, as site of theoretical and creative elaboration, as well as concrete structure. The thesis starts by identifying some fundamen-tal wall types, drawing on the great treatises written between the XV and the XIX century; secondly, it addresses the wall as a surface and eventually the relationship between walls and openings, where the complex connections between the construction and the appearance of the wall emerge. In the second part, the focus shifts on the relationship between wall and space, in particu-lar the urban dwelling space, which is chosen as the field to develop more in-depth analyses because of its condition of “mediocre subject”, i.e. far removed from the experimental and symbolic excesses to be found in monumental, institutional or infrastructural architecture. Some residential types are identified and their spaces are read as the repetition of a certain span (parallel walls systems), as systems of rooms, as a composition of circulations and espaces utiles (following J. Guadet’s nomenclature) con-nected to Beaux-Arts “plan poché” tradition. In each one of these cases, the elements of wall syntax, which have been previously identified, become the material base that makes it possible to materialize composition principles and spatial intentions. The third part of the thesis considers about one hundred residential projects, mostly contem-porary ones, and tries to identify a “conscious combination” of the syntactic and composition-al themes that emerged and established them-selves over the past centuries: the enhanced syncretism of current times is interpreted as a rich confusion in which the idea of wall, once again, finds a way to regenerate itself.

The idea of wall and its permanence in contemporary residential architecture.
