All Masses are celebrated inside the church buildings with the exception of a special 10 AM parking lot Mass which is celebrated in the front windows at Saint Malachy Church. The faithful will be able to listen from their car by tuning their radio to 87.9 FM.
If you are unable to be seated or feel uncomfortable being inside during Mass, please participate from your car and tune your radio to 87.9 FM (applicable to all Masses at all churches except for the live stream Mass from Holy Trinity at 10 AM on Sunday).
Everyone is asked to please register for an indoor weekend Mass by using the link provided in the bulletin, by following the links on archangelgabrielparish.org, or by calling the parish office at 412-787-2140. The 10 AM Mass at Holy Trinity will continue to be live streamed and can be accessed by visiting archangelgabrielparish.org.
You can find what we are doing as a parish in response to COVID-19 at www.archangelgabrielparish.org/covid19 in order to make the best decisions about participation for you and your household. Bishop Zubik has granted everyone a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass. No one is currently obliged to attend Mass. If you feel ill, are older than 64, or have health issues, please stay home.
You can listen to any Mass (with the exception of the 10 AM live streamed Sunday Mass at Holy Trinity Church) from the
church parking lot by tuning in to 87.9 FM on the radio.

Moses spoke to all the people, saying: “A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kin; to him you shall listen. This is exactly what you requested of the LORD, your God, at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God, nor see this great fire anymore, lest we die.’ And the LORD said to me, ‘This was well said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him. Whoever will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name, I myself will make him answer for it. But if a prophet presumes to speak in my name an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, he shall die.’”
FIRST READING — DEUTERONOMY 18:15-20FIRST READING — DEUTERONOMY 18:15-20
1. Come, let us ring out joy to the Lord; hail the rock who saves us. Let us come into his presence, giving thanks; let us hail him with a song of praise. R/
2. O come; let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us, for he is our God and we the people who belong to his pasture, the flock that is led by his hand. R/
3. O that today you would listen to his voice! “Harden not your hearts as at meribah, as on that day at Massah i nthe desert when your forebears put me to the test; when they tried me, though they saw my work.” R/
RESPONSORIAL PSALM — PSALM 95RESPONSORIAL PSALM — PSALM 95
Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without distraction.

OFFERTORY HYMN —CHRIST, BE OUR LIGHTOFFERTORY HYMN —CHRIST, BE OUR LIGHT
Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.
GOSPEL — MARK 1:21-28GOSPEL — MARK 1:21-28
O blessed Archangel Gabriel, you announced our salvation to the Virgin Mary. Pray for us that we may be courageous and compassionate, strong and faithful followers of her Son, Jesus. By your intercession, obtain for us the unification of our parish, and the fruitfulness of our mission to make disciples. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Pandemic Devotions & SacramentalsFr. David Poecking (Pastor)
The Church distinguishes between sacraments and sacramentals.
Sacraments are “efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us.” They (a) confer God’s favor and life on recipients; (b) have an outward, often visible or audible sign; (c) were established by the Lord Jesus; and (d) were entrusted to the Church for their administration. The Church counts seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, Holy Orders, and above all the Eucharist—the sole sacrament applicable to both the living and the dead.
Sacramentals resemble the sacraments. They (a) incline people to receive God’s favor, (b) have an outward, often visible or audible sign; (c) are established and administered by the Church. Sacramentals include blessings, exorcisms, relics, pilgrimages, Stations of the Cross, rosaries, and more, often varying from country to country or from generation to generation.
Sacramentals enrich the life of the Church but they can never replace the sacraments, which are a sacred trust given by Christ to his Church for the salvation of souls and of the world. The sacraments must remain a priority in the mission of the Church until the end of the world.
With the onset of the pandemic last year, the faithful were temporarily barred from attending Mass. Though the sacraments were not stopped—the priests continued celebrating the Masses, e.g., albeit behind locked doors—the experience was unsatisfying and often hurtful, as when Funeral Masses were delayed for weeks or months. We don’t want to return to those conditions.
Thus the Church and her parishes face a risk optimization problem. Many of our activities pose the risk of spreading viral contagion. Pastoral and civil authorities need to judge which activities are worth the risk, and which are not. These judgments cannot always be left to individual choice, since contagion, like pollution, is mostly a shared experience. The absence of regulation simply favors the irresponsible over the responsible.
At Archangel Gabriel Parish, I make a risk optimization choice to prioritize the sacraments over the sacramentals. I am going to limit our overall risk by limiting the sacramentals more than the sacraments. In order to increase our chance of sustaining our Masses, Baptisms, funerals, and weddings, we’ll sacrifice some of the availability of the sacramentals:
1. Blessing of Throats: On February 3, the St. Blaise blessings will follow the schedule elsewhere in the bulletin, but with minimal exposure: In church the minister will say the prayer just once from the sanctuary, without individual blessings; or he’ll be outside.
2. Ashes: On February 17, we’ll administer ashes during Masses or out of doors, but in the Roman fashion, sprinkling the ashes on the crown of the head, not smearing them on the forehead. Moreover, the formula will be recited just once by the minister in the sanctuary, and not with each individual application of ashes.
3. Stations of the Cross & Novenas: Our traditional Stations, our St. Anthony novena, and other devotions will be conducted not in the church, but via media: Online for those of you who have internet access, or via booklet or pamphlet for others.
Thank you for your patience and prayers through these strange times!

We are excited to announce that the Pizza Kitchen returns this Lent operating out of Saint Malachy’s cafeteria! The full menu and hours will be posted soon. Bakers, dough-makers, sauce-makers, pizza-dressers, and general kitchen helpers are all needed Thursdays from 8-11 AM and Fridays from 5 AM-6 PM. Contact Rose Dombrowski by calling/texting 412-952-4467 or emailing [email protected] for more info or to volunteer. At least 10 more people are needed. A full menu will be provided in upcoming bulletins.
Much to our regret, the fish fry will not happen at Saint Malachy this year. It was one of our liveliest fundraisers, raising about $50,000 of annual profit. We hope that the new version of the Pizza Kitchen will be able to continue some of the fish fry menu items. Those interested in preserving elements of the fish fry tradition are encouraged to contact Rose as above or Ken Zern at [email protected]

Since we have just celebrated our first anniversary as a parish, it was suggested that I write a brief history of how our initial year unfolded. So, here you have the first installment that offers a glimpse to remember where we have been. Look for future installments in upcoming bulletins.
2020. Just its mention will bring to everyone all kinds of reactions from, “I couldn’t wait until it was over,” to “I never want to have another year like that.” While we all together faced the restrictions and changes brought about by the pandemic, it was our first year as a new parish. On January 6, 2020, the former parishes of Holy Trinity, Saint John of God, and Saint Malachy were joined together to become Archangel Gabriel Parish. Even with the limitations and adjustments that had to be made, upsetting the way parish life usually happens, there is reason to celebrate. We made it, despite the hiccups and challenges, with some creative ways to be Church that came about when our hands were tied, and we had to think in a different way.
Last January, none of us could have imagined where one year would take us. After becoming Archangel Gabriel Parish, we were off and running. The bulletin continued to publish a series taken from the historical notes of our predecessor parishes, beginning when the French explorers brought missionaries down the Ohio River. It weaved the story of how the Catholic faith grew over time, including the strength of the immigrant communities that settled within our boundaries and planted parishes where they could worship, be formed in the faith, and come together to build community.
Father Dave called together his new advisory councils, Pastoral and Finance, to assist him in his role as pastor, and the Executive Team replaced the former Executive Council that was formed when the grouping began in 2018. They met for regular meetings through May 2020. The Parish Finance Council gathered for some formation according to the policies for councils promulgated by the diocese, and to address outreach, a Pastoral Care Cabinet was formed, bringing together the leaders of our various apostolates, ministries and organizations that serve others.
The parish sent representatives to the annual March for Life and the Arise speaker series addressed the topic of faithful citizenship. Following up with the project that was part of the diocesan-wide capital campaign, the replacement of the old pews and some other renovations were resumed at Holy Trinity Church. Sadly, Father Robert Hermann, former pastor of Holy Trinity Parish, and a resident priest in the parish, died after a brief illness. His funeral Mass was celebrated by Bishop Zubik at Saint Malachy Church because of the renovation.

FAITH FORMATION UPDATESteve Swank (Coordinator of Faith Formation, pro tem)
The next round of Fam Cat sessions begins today and the theme is “Filling the Empty Space Within: Prayer & Spirituality.” Although all of our session themes are important, this one in particular plays a critical role in our ability to have a relationship with God. Prayer is the way in which we respond to God’s invitation to grow closer to Him, so it is paramount that we have an active and healthy prayer life!
Families will watch three videos, the first about prayer, the second about types of prayer, and the third about family as the “school of prayer.” After discussion, children and their parents have an opportunity to write their own family prayers. Just as we ask for your prayers for our families and catechists, we will continue to pray for all of you. Thank you and God bless you!
EDGE SPRING SEMESTERMaria Fenner (Discipleship Coordinator)
Our spring semester of EDGE is off to a great start! Despite the pandemic and the challenges that surround virtual faith formation, we were overjoyed to have 60 kids join our January 20th EDGE Night! That’s up from the 45 participants who joined us this time last year. This semester, our EDGE Nights seek to help us know who Jesus is so that we can identify His love in our everyday lives. We will ask questions like:
• Why should I care about Jesus? • Was Jesus ever anxious?• Where is Jesus now?• and even… Did Jesus ever get grounded?
The next EDGE Night is Wednesday, February 3rd, at 6:30pm. All middle schoolers are welcome! Feel free to reach out any time if you have any questions about EDGE Middle School Ministry, or if you’d like to receive information on how your middle schoolers can join us! You can contact me at [email protected] or 412-787-2140 x 102.

It has come to our attention that our February 7th Confirmation Preparation session was scheduled for the exact same time as the Superbowl. Since most of you likely at least have plans to watch the game (or commercials) together as a family, we have decided to move our session up from 6:30pm to 2pm. The session will last approximately 90 minutes, and all other details will remain as previously planned. Please note the time change and contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your understanding and patience! We look forward to seeing the candidates for Confirmation Preparation session two!

This hymn opens with a jubilant call to rejoice in the reign of our Lord. The middle stanzas are rich in biblical allusions to the triumphant reign of Christ. We are assured that Jesus has removed the guilt of our sin and is now reigning at God’s right hand, in complete control over death and hell (Hebrews 1:3, Revelation 1:18). The final stanza reminds us to look forward in hope of Christ’s Second Coming (1 Peter 1:21) In view of this joyful future, the refrain reminds us to “Rejoice, again I say rejoice” (see Philippians 4:4).
The great hymn writer Charles Wesley composed and published the text in 1744 in his brother John’s Collection of Moral and Sacred Poems. Charles later published it in his own anonymous Hymns for our Lord’s Resurrection in 1746. The theme of the text is celebration of Christ as King and Lord of all the earth. Wesley originally wrote six stanzas, but hymnals vary on which of these are included today. The original first and third (“His kingdom cannot fail”) stanzas are always included in modern hymnals, while the fourth (“He sits at God’s right hand”) appears only occasionally, and the fifth (“He all His foes shall quell”) is almost always omitted. The other two stanzas (the second, “Jesus the Savior reigns,” and sixth, “Rejoice in glorious hope”) are usually included.
The tune DARWALL’S 148TH, named after its composer John Darwall (1731–1789), was first published as a setting for Psalm 148 in Aaron William’s New Universal Psalmodist (1770) with only soprano and bass parts. The harmonization dates from the nineteenth century. It since has become widely known for its energy and appropriate – triumphant – tone, especially for the Easter Season.

The Pizza Kitchen is back February 19, 2021 for Lent! The Pizza Kitchen needs dozens of volunteers to operate and we hope to include many of the Saint Malachy Fish Fry traditions, so we are in need of many more volunteers on Thursdays and Fridays. Pizza Kitchen volunteers in the past have enjoyed not only the work but the wonderful fellowship that is offered by volunteering alongside fellow parishioners and friends. Many thanks to our seasoned volunteers for their continued support! We will work to maintain COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols including social distancing and mask wearing. If you are interested in helping please contact Rose Dombrowski by calling 412-952-4467 or by emailing [email protected].
