Different contemporary approaches and methods will be presented and discussed with local and international case studies. Thematic lectures and guest inputs will introduce and explain key aspects of Hong Kong’s planning history and current practice. Tutorials explore these aspects in focused studies of individual districts. During the course, specific overlaps and boundaries between the disciplines of architecture, urban design and planning will be identified to facilitate and encourage interdisciplinary thinking. DESCRIPTION

ASSIGNMENTS Assignment 1 (group work): ���Identifying and interrelating a range of global urban issues in a system map based on assigned readings & presentation at the workshop at the Shenzhen Biennale. 10% of the total grade Assignment 2 (group work): Applying and testing urban planning and design methods introduced in the lectures and seminars for the study of individual districts in Hong Kong & presentation of the results. The study report of each group has to include the following parts:

2.1 Background study (including historical maps, master and land use plans) 2.2 Community profile (based on population statistics, institutions and interviews) 2.3 Study of the urban morphology and typology 2.4 Study of the street network 2.5 Identification of the urban rules & guidelines 2.6 Index of the design elements of selected public spaces

Each group will develop the district report in accumulative steps, following the topics and methods introduced in the lectures. Interim results will be presented and discussed in weekly tutorials. Each report has to be handed-in with a concluding summary considering all different analyzed aspects and a recommendation for a future district community benefit plan.

60% of the total grade Assignment 3 (individual): Analysis of an international urban design project. This case study should refer to the criteria and methods introduced in the lectures. The assignment gives the opportunity to learn from international examples of best practices in urban design. The paper should follow academic standards and include all references (6 pages including images). A paper layout will be distributed in class.
