3. CONCLUSION
1.0 Introduction T.R.Hamzah and Yeang Sdn Bhd have been one of the greatest architectural
firms in the industry, well known for their Ecoarchitecture and Ecomasterplanning with
their signature hyper green design that goes beyond rating system. I am fortunate and
grateful to be able to join one of the top firms in the field to carry out the internship
program as environmental sustainable eco-architecture has been my passion and
having the program in this firm is the greatest opportunity for me to learn from the best
in this field.
Other than my passion on environmental sustainable eco-architecture, my life-
long dream is to contribute to the skyline of a city, which also means being able to
design a Skyscraper of my own in my architectural career. And in this firm, they have
designed many well-known eco-skyscrapers, which are high-rise building that integrates
designed systems benignly and seamlessly with the natural environment and
aesthetically fulfilling. Therefore, I am determined to join this firm to carry out my
internship program as they have been achieving my passion and dreams with top of the
class professional standard and winning multiple awards, which allows me to
understand better on how a skyscraper is designed and built from the very start of
designing stage till the final construction stages, allowing me to be exposed to certain
knowledge on designing a skyscraper as well as incorporating green, energy saving
technologies and passive designing strategies into a building design, in summary
‘Saving the planet with Design’.
2.1 GBD Tower (Jalan Raja Chulan, Kuala Lumpur) The GBD Tower is the first project that I was assigned to work on. The scope of
work that I was involved in are early stages of the project, such as schematic design
and CAD drawing amendments and photoshop for Development Order submission and
presentation as this project is currently only at the early stage .
For this project, most of the task that I was working on is sketching as I am
supposed to design internal layout plans for a few floors in this high rise building. This
has greatly improved my designing and sketching abilities as I was guided by the
professionals in the office and learn many considerations on spatial planning. Other
than working on schematic designs, I was also assigned to amend the floor plans of the
tower according to the comments made by the mechanical and electrical engineers
using AutoCad, which definitely allow me to understand more on the technical
requirements needed in a high rise building and understand different local authorities.
Lastly, I was also involved in floor plan renderings using Photoshop for the project
presentation, which is used to ease the understanding of clients and engineers about
the spatial zoning of plans in the building. Furthermore, I was also assigned to design
the ramps in car park floors of the building, which is a very challenging task for me as
many calculations are involved to achieve the sufficient gradient of the ramps with ratio
in the meantime making sure that sufficient head room is provided for the spaces below
the ramp. Through this project, I am able to fully understand the early architectural
stage of a building as I was fortunate to be able to involve in the Schematic design
stages of the given project.
Other than designing and CAD drawings, I have better understanding on passive
design strategies and Green Building Index (GBI) requirements as the GBD Tower is no
exception in terms of eco-architecture design that the firms is specialized in, such as the
build form orientation, voids and spatial planning for maximum natural ventilation,
vertical green plantations and so on. This has greatly improved my understanding on
green architecture, how it actually works and improves the comfort of the occupants in
the building.

2.2 Extended Care Rehab Center (Burma Road, Penang)
This project is my most committed project throughout the internship period in this
firm. This is a 20 storey rehabilitation centre based on Penang, and thanks to my
supervisor which is the design architect for this project, Park Jinkyu and also the project
architect Teen Woon, I have this great opportunity to be strongly involve in this project
over many aspect and stage as there is only 3 people in this project team which
includes me.
When I was assigned to be part of this project, I was given a list of mechanical
and electrical equipment and room sizes, and I should include all the mechanical and
electrical requirements into the floor plan of this building with a well thought spatial
organization for all the components in the list to work as well as ease the maintenance
for the engineers. It was really a tough task for me as I have just completed semester 4
in architectural studies, therefore I have never come across these technical issues such
as the mechanical and electrical requirements too much. But from this practice, I have
learnt how to calculate and design the room size and floor to ceiling height based on the
required volume of water tanks are needed by this building, which is a very handy
knowledge for me to apply on my further studies as well as future working period. After
all the mechanical and electrical requirements have been allocated into the floor plan, I
was also assigned to draw several sections of the entire building and also some small
diagrammatic sections as the mechanical and electrical floors are allocated
underground with different floor to ceiling height and the level difference from the
ground, to ease the understanding of engineers. Furthermore, thanks to this project, I
have also attended my very first CCM meeting with the mechanical and electrical
engineer to discuss and solve problems from the floor plan together with my design
architect and project architect team mates.
After weeks of hard work preparing and designing drawings for this project, finally
it was ready to be submitted for Development Order, which brings me to my next task
which is more fun and less technical, 3D modeling. The first 3D modeling that was an
internal layout of the typical room floors of this building, with the purpose of presenting
to client for their understanding of the spaces and dimensions in each room with some
simple renderings. Then, the 3D modeling task escalated very quickly to model the
entire building with some façade designing and amending in the process of building the
model. Despite it being time consuming, I had great excitement working on the model
as I get to see the floor plans I did becomes a 3D building, just like watching the seed
slowly growing up to a tree.

2.3 LGT Green (Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur)
In this project, I was assigned by Chace (Project architect) to assist Ling (Design
Architect) to work on a high rise residential tower built form options and design report
compilation for presentation to the client. This project required me to design a few
building form through some sketching and 3D modeling, as well as working on a design
report compilation through a software that is new to me, Adobe InDesign. It was also a
fun and challenging project as I have quite some freedom in designing the high rise
residential tower, taking into consideration of the views on the site to orientate the
building and also planning the circulation of the site as it is a very congested and busy
area, in the meantime applying some passive design strategies and landscape designs.
Despite the project being at the earliest stages of concept development and
schematic design, I have acquired a new software skills which is using InDesign for
report compilation, and also having the opportunity to visit the site to work on some site
analysis and being aware of the future developments around the site and building by
laws from the local authority.

2.4 Jemuruk Island Resort (Jemuruk Island, Langkawi)
This is yet another interesting project that is newly acquired by the firm, as the
client wants to build several resorts with outstanding architecture and environmentally
sustainable features that are never before seen in Malaysia such as solar powered
resorts, underwater resorts, resorts constructed on the mountain cliff and so on. For this
project, I am required to do some precedent studies on several resorts with these
special architectural features, and also working on some site analysis through research
from the internet as I wasn’t able to visit the site. Through this project, I have yet again
gained more knowledge on passive design and also different technologies on energy
conservations, in addition gaining some knowledge on different resorts architecture,
programs and spatial planning.

2.5 Low Yat Masterplan (Bandar Tasik Puteri Rawang)
Out of the many high rise residential building that I mostly have been working on,
I have also done a few master plan drawings, which is a brand new experience as we
haven’t reach that point of the topic in our architectural studies. The masterplan is
divided into a few sections, then assigned to few other people to work together, which
only leads to final compilation in the end by the project team leader. As for my part, I
was assigned to plan the terrace houses section in the masterplan taking into
consideration of rules and regulations from Garis Panduan Negeri Selangor 2012, as
well as sorting out the entire master plan’s road circulation. After the drawings are done,
I have also taken part in Photoshop of the drawings for presentation. Through this
project, I have understood the basics of master planning and some guide lines from the
Selangor authority in the mean time having some new experience on road circulation
planning.

2.6 Company Profile
This is the first graphic designing work that I am assigned to work for my
company, which is designing and doing page layout for the company profile, with
additional Japanese translation for the information required as the company profile are
to be courier to Japan branch. Japanese translation are provided by Mr Seguchi, the
person in charge over at Japan and input by me in the profile. Through this practice, I
have managed to strengthen my InDesgin software skills as well as getting to know
more about company’s project.

2.7 Miscellaneous
T.R Hamzah and Yeang has been participating in many architectural competitions
and won 70 awards over the 25 years time, therefore submission of these architectural
project works are strict and heavily overlooked by the company. As for this internship
period, I was assigned to handle the write-up of every project entry to the submission for
ArcAsia award 2017, basically just like an architectural journalist. The project write-up
that I did includes the Roof-Roof house, Ganendra Art house, Plaza Vads Annex
Building, SOLARIS, Fo Guang Shan Institutional complex and so on of the well known
and published projects of the firm.
Through this project, I have learnt to use words to encapsulate the intricacies of
the built environment without becoming stuck in a quagmire of esoteric soundbites and
pretentious cliches, in the meantime succinctly write about buildings and their designers
while remaining engaging to those outside the realm of architectural design, which
definitely improves the way I should describe and put my concept ideas into word for
future projects. Other than that, I have yet again learnt many passive design strategies
and energy saving technologies such as Bioswale sustainable drainage system, sun
shading devices, environmentally benign materials and so on from the best example in
the real world as understanding of the entire building is much needed to prepare the
write-ups.
2.8 Conclusion
After completing my industrial training, I had been exposed to an Architect’s
working life, which allows me to understand more about the definition of Architecture
and prepare myself to become a responsible and innovative Architect in the future.
Working in T.R.Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd have been a great experience for me as I
was given many opportunity and responsibility to work on many varieties of project, and
even handled many work that are far beyond my level of knowledge and skills at my
current stage of studies to be able to learn and experience more to prepare myself
better for the future such as the sustainable architectural design strategies applied on
every projects that I have been involved. Moreover, the internship program indirectly
helps me to learn independently, discipline myself, self-trust, take initiative and ability to
solve problems. Besides, my communication skills is strengthen as i was required to
communicate with new colleagues and engineers to work better as a team. Apart from
that, I had also developed my programming skills such as Indesign for design report
compilation, improving 3D modelling skills through Rhinocerous and 3Dsmax and also
drafting skills from AutoCAD. In conclusion, the projects that I had learnt during the
internship program are useful for me in the future to face challenges in a working
environment and are grateful to be able join a firm that provides a good learning and
working experience.
