Pote’s Notes

W e’re Back! Well, almost anyway. We are still adher-ing to the regulations set forth by local government while slowly opening portions of our building and

operations. We take your health seriously. It was great to have the June Temple meeting again in Ben-

nett Hall. The Cooking Club provided the meal afterwards – Thanks Nobles!! Also, taking advantage of General Order 2, we were able to have many Nobles on Zoom to join us as well. I cannot thank everyone enough for their efforts to make this all happen. July Temple meeting will be a repeat with great food by the Cooking Club, and a cash bar before and after the meet-ing by our restaurant staff.

July will be a great month beginning July 10th with a showcase of the new restaurant appetiz-ers, which will be served complimentary, and a cash bar from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Come join us in the Grand Ballroom. Our July 18th “NO PLACE LIKE HOME” party will be exciting! Watch for the details coming soon. Thanks again to First Ceremonial Master Jeremy and Lady Gwen Yates, Director Jerry McClary, Directors Staff and the Potentates Aides for making this happen.

The stay at home orders created a delay in Crown Jewels and 50-year pins. We expect to have them all in for the August Temple Meeting. I will also be recognizing some Nobles for their service and years of dedication to Ararat Shrine. The Recognition Committee had some very dif-ficult decisions to reduce the list down to one deserving Noble in some of the categories. We have so many that have dedicated their time and efforts.

We will have finally had our first parade of the season by the time of this publication. What a parade in Toronto, KS honoring our Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder! I want to thank all the Nobles and ladies who joined us. We will have to see what future parades will be held or postponed. Watch for the changes as time moves on.

Sadly, as you are aware we have lost one of our beloved Past Potentates, Illustrious Sir Don Price. Illustrious Sir Don was active in the Ole Car units and always had a smile and word of wis-dom. He truly will be missed. Please keep former First Lady Opal in your prayers.

As you all are aware 2020 CSSA in Springfield has been cancelled over concerns of the No-bility and ladies’ health.

We are excited for our upcoming Ceremonial on September 12. We already have quite a few new candidates waiting to join our Band of Brothers. Each and everyone one of you nobles need to reach out to your friends, family or co-workers and sign up “Just One More” to make this Cer-emonial one of the largest in years.

Until next month, be safe, healthy and happy.

BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

Travel Hints & TipsBY RUSS DUBUC, 816-454-3800

Are you pent up and tired of being locked away at home? Some travel is possible. There will be definite nuisance factors but it’s all in the name of safety.

I have found it impossible to follow everyone who plans to open and when. I do feel confident in that fact that everything will be supper clean. Staffs will be wearing masks and social distancing should be practiced whenever possible.

The biggest news is that Las Vegas is opened. Our national parks are opening. Amtrak Vacations has some neat train tours featuring the parks. At this time, Alaska and Hawaii are not realistic options. A US company is offering river cruises on the Mississippi and Co-lumbia Rivers. Disney is to open the parks July 15th with reservations required and capacity limitations. Universal is opened with limited capacity and facemasks required. Please call me if you are interested in booking any of these.

Thinking about traveling outside the US? The idea of getting on an airplane and flying to Europe anytime soon, is not my idea of a good time. Many of the resorts in Mexico are open. The Caribbean Islands are slowly opening. As you know, I’m a Certi-fied Sandals and Beaches Resorts Specialist for the Caribbean and a Palace Resorts Pro Specialist for Mexico. Call me if you are interested in any of these. I’ll check on airfare and room availability. Remember, final payment is due 45 days prior to departure, the Caribbean becomes excessively hot from mid-July through mid-September and then there’s Hurricane Season. The best time to travel the Caribbean is from mid-October and beyond.

That brings up the major cruise lines. I’ve seen a slow hopeful start around August 1st with a few ships in each fleet sailing. Final payment for most of the major cruise lines is 90 days prior to departure. Norwegian is 120 days. Each cruise line has excellent cancellation and rebooking policies to take care of whatever happens.

The best way to avoid the confusion is to call me with your vacation plans. We will discuss what is best for you and your fam-ily, so that Happy Travels will be yours.

June 2020 Temple Meeting NotesBY KEVIN GRESHAM, OUTER GUARD

8 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS JULY 2020

June 10th 2020 Temple meeting marked the return to the Temple for the regularly stated meeting. The meeting was open to

all those who chose to be in person while still providing the Zoom video conferencing plat-form for those that preferred.

Illustrious Potentate Jim Kerns called the June 2020 Ararat Shrine Stated Meeting to order at 7:00 pm, June 10, 2020 in Bennett Auditorium. The room had been set up prior to the meeting with seating spaced for Social Dis-tancing.

Noble Assistant Rabban Donnie Fowler informed the Captain of the Guard Bud Hig-ginbotham that the Potentate was about to open Ararat Temple for business. That done, Captain of the Guard Bud Higginbotham in-formed the Outer Guard Kevin Gresham, and then reported to Noble Donnie, who informed Illustrious Sir J i m that the Temple was un-der a double and trusty guard.

Chief Rabban Michael Aulgur then sur-veyed the attendees and informed Illustrious Sir Jim that our Temple was free from jeop-ardy as there were none present save Nobles of our order. Illustrious Sir Jim said “Tis well.”

Oriental Guide Mark Koontz prepared the Altar.

Chaplain Wes Wingfield remembered our Nobles who had been visited by the Black Camel and gave the invocation.

The Colors we placed prior to the business meeting beginning. The assembled Nobles, led by Chief Rabban Michael Aulgur, recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance. The singing of our National Anthem was led by Noble Jack Mote

Resulting from a motion passed at the Feb-ruary 12, 2020 stated meeting, the minutes of the previous meeting were not read.

Noble Recorder Mike Wheeler was called upon, announcing there were four Petitions for Creation. There were no Petitions for Affiliation and no Petitions for Associa-tion. The petitions presented requiring a vote and were duly were voted on by a show of hands and accepted by the No-bility

There were no Petitions for Restoration. There were no requests for Demit

It was communicated that the com-mittee on remissions met and there were no rec-ommendations for the permanent remission of dues for any Nobles. Recorder

Treasurer Nick Baldi was called upon to give the Treasurers Report dated May 29, 2020. The report was presented and the Nobil-ity was informed that the report was available for viewing in the Temple office. We continue to face the challenges presented by the lack of

revenue coming in. Everyone’s help with up-coming events is greatly appreciated.

Illustrious Sir Jim called for those present-ing gifts and contributions. The Greeters pre-sented a generous donation to the General fund in the amount of $3,000 which was accepted with a robust round of applause. Captain Jack Everly presented a donation from a patron at the recent Bass Tournament for the Shriners Hospi-tal. Noble Morris Carter presented a donation in the amount of $1,000 from Boonslick Shrine Club to the Hospital Transportation Fund.

None being seen Illustrious Potentate Jim noted there were no visiting Nobles.

Illustrious Sir Jim conveyed that CSSA in Springfield Missouri has been canceled. He also discussed the new branding which has changed from Shriners Hospitals for Children to

Shriners Children’s™

Illustrious Sir Jim called for Committee re-ports and Chief Rabban Michael Aulgur Noble Michael communicated that we are still having the 2020 Circus. There will be posters and fli-ers available in the Temple office. Advertising collections are key to the success of the event and letters will be sent to soon to past advertis-ers thanking them for their paste generosity and requesting a donation for this year.

Noble Assistant Rabban Donnie Fowler noted that the NASCAR raffle is in full swing and that although Ararat is currently in 3rd place, there are very few tickets sales needed to move us to 1st place. This would bring in a $10,000 commission to the Temple which would certainly be welcome during this cur-rent financial challenge. The car will be taken to several upcoming area events to help with the promotion. The upcoming 2020 Swap Meet has been postponed until October 4th, 2020 at the Cable Dahmer Arena. Noble Donnie will be distributing updated posters to all clubs and units. The next Swap Meet meeting will be July 14th at the Temple

Oriental Guide Mark Koontz provided an update on our new fundraiser, the Festival of Trees. There are still trees available and the committee is forming. This is a very large fun-draising event for several other Temples and we are looking forward to seeing some great results for Ararat very soon.

1st Ceremonial Master Jeremy Yates pre-sented a donation to the Temple in the amount of $250 from an anonymous donor. A welcome back to the Temple party is being planned but the date has not been established yet. Stay tuned for more information on that. The Bring a Brother to Dinner event is being scheduled for

September 11th. 2nd Ceremonial Master Ben Allen was

called on to discuss the 1926 Pontiac raffle. Noble Ben noted that the raffle is facing many challenges this year due to numerous cancelled events and thanked everyone for their support of the event. We were able to sell several tick-ets at the recent Ararat Bass Tournament. As a reminder, all proceeds from the Pontiac Raffle ticket sales come to the Temple and everyone is encouraged to sell tickets.

Noble J.W. Page was called to report on the Sportsman Event. Noble J.W. that ticket sales are slowly progressing and encouraged everyone to share information about the app for purchasing tickets. The office now has tickets for sale.

Noble Gary Davis was called on for the Hospital Committee report. Noble Gary noted that the office reopened on June 1st and hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday. With the pandemic challenges is has been de-termined that flights are the best method of get-ting patients to and from the hospitals at this time.

Membership Chairman and Bingo Chair-man Noble Larry Adolphsen was called on for his reports. Noble Larry communicated that Queen of Hearts fundraising is in full swing Thickets can be purchased for $1 and draw-ings will be held every Friday. There is a $100 minimum prize and the maximum is the jackpot based on the size of the pot. Bingo has restarted with social distancing we are grateful to have this important revenue generating event back The players also made a generous donation.

Director of Uniformed Units, Noble Ron Knold announced that August 22nd in Lexington Missouri is the only scheduled parade at this time. Please stay tuned as things hopefully be-gin to open back up.

Illustrious Potentate Jim asked the Nobil-ity to thank Illustrious Sir Henry McDaniel P.P. 2018 and the cooking team’s generosity for providing hamburgers and beverages following the Temple meeting tonight.

Illustrious Potentate Jim noted that the restaurant is currently scheduled to reopen on July 13th. July 8th is the next regularly sched-uled Temple meeting. August 15th is the Cops and Crooks Party. October 10th is the Potentates Ball at Harrah’s Casino.

Illustrious Potentate Jim Kerns called for the Good of the Order. Noble J.W. Page and the Provost presented Illustrious Sir Jim Kerns and Noble Treasurer Nick Baldi with a commemorative mug from the 2020 Imperial session in gratitude for their many hours of hard work in assistance with the planning of the event which has been recently cancelled.

Noble J.W. also noted that the Provosts hours have been modified to coincide with the re-opening of the Temple.

There are doorbells being added to the lower front door and the upper back door so that the office staff can open those doors re-motely if necessary. Provost with manage the Provost desk on evening when the restaurant is open as well as when the facility is open for rentals.

Assistant Rabban Donnie Fowler com-municated that the Richmond Shrine Clubs 6th Annual Low Country Boil will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

Director Joh Hooper discussed his feel-ing of thankfulness to be back together at the Temple. Noble John also expressed his grati-tude for the direction of the Potentate and the Divan for dealing with the current financial and social challenges that the Temple is facing due the COVID-19 pandemic.

Noble Barry Hoard noted that the Poten-tates golf Tournament is still scheduled for August 29th and all proceeds will be donated to the Temple.

Ole Cars

This year’s president Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd decided to step up his game. Richard

went all out and had his car com-pletely repainted, so that he would show better for competitions. Sad-ly, this year’s CSSA was cancelled, but there is always next year. I must say the car looks absolutely beauti-ful. We’re looking forward to see-ing it parade very soon.

ORIENTAL BANDBy Dave Wilbanks, Scribe

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.
