The love and quest for freedom is intrinsic to the Irish character. Despite the continued attempts by one of the world’s greatest imperial powers for over eight centuries to extinguish the light of freedom in the Irish heart, it has preserved. St. Patrick himself was kidnapped as a child and enslaved, only to escape and return to the land of his captors preaching a Gospel of forgiveness. The historical St. Patrick was the first recorded western voice to denounce the evils of slavery; he should be remembered and honored for that, not for “driving the snakes out of Ireland”. It was freedom from oppression and man-made famine that caused the Irish to come to America; they saw beyond the prejudices of anti-Irish/anti-Catholic nativist groups the true freedoms of America and have made their mark in every aspect of American Society. Their gratitude is marked by the many Irish Americans who wear their green today on their graves in defense of our country and in service to our communities. Today’s parade commander, a veteran of Iwo Jima and recipient of the Purple Heart and Silver Star, is a reminder of those sacrifices. Despite their success in their new home, “Ireland’s exiled children in America” never forgot the struggle for freedom by those they had left in Ireland. In this spirit, today we honor the veterans of the Korean War. That this conflict should be known as “America’s Forgotten War” is scandalous; however, in our Irish heritage, remembrance is a duty. We are proud to honor the veterans of Inchon, Chosin, Bloody Ridge, Heartbreak Ridge and count- less other battles without names and acts of heroism unrecorded. We recall in a special way the 28 Irishmen who fought and died in that conflict as members of the United States military, but who waited over fifty years to be granted US citizenship. We also in this 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement remember that Ireland’s struggle for freedom continues to this day. The historic agreement brokered by US Special Envoy George Mitchell ended the thirty year conflict of “the Troubles” and has spawned two decades of relative peace; our Grand Marshal’s brother, Seamus Woods, was a casualty of that tragic conflict, may he Rest In Peace. Yet, twenty years on many provisions, despite being agreed to a signed treaty, are unimplemented; specifically a Bill of Rights, addressing the legacy of the past with justice and recognition of the right of the Irish people to speak their native language. Yes, there is peace, but it is the fragile peace of a cease fire and not the enduring peace which comes from parity of respect. Now, Britain’s decision to pursue Brexit in contradiction of the will of the majority of the people of Northern Ireland threatens the Good Friday Agreement at its very foundation. As we celebrate the Patron Saint of Ireland, let us pray for a permanent peace with justice and respect throughout Ireland.
