IntroductionWhy not learn a new language in a unique and diverse community in the developing world? With Projects Abroad you can choose to combine volunteer work with a language course or take an intensive stand-alone language course.
These placements are perfect for anyone wanting to learn an international language, such as French or Spanish. They are also suitable for those interested in learning the local language of a particular country.
With help from our language teachers, you will improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through one-on-one tuition or small group sessions. There will be plenty of opportunity to practise what you have learned whilst spending time with your host family and fellow volunteers.

SAFeTy & SecuriTy: We take your security abroad very seriously. Before we send volunteers anywhere, the countries must be politically stable and safe. We are in contact with the Foreign and commonwealth Office regarding safety and stability and, of course, we have the added security of our own overseas staff who know the local area in detail.
STrucTure: Our language courses are structured so that you get the most out of your time overseas. each placement will be tailored to your level and requirements. Projects Abroad staff will be there to provide assistance and guidance throughout the trip.
VArieTy: There are more than 20 destinations to choose from, allowing volunteers with all interests to find a course that is just right for them.
FlexiBiliTy: Our language courses have no set start dates, meaning you can choose when your placement begins.
cV And SelF-deVelOPmenT: learning a language overseas is excellent for your cV and university applications. it gives you greater life experience, develops personal skills and shows your initiative to try something new – traits which appeal to employers and universities.

Why choose Projects Abroad?
Our intensive courses are ideal if you want to seriously improve your language skills over a short period of time. you can take part whether you’re a complete beginner or already have some knowledge. you will normally study 15 hours each week from monday to Friday. This will give you plenty of time to complete homework assignments and spend time with your host-family. you can also practise your skills while exploring your new surroundings.
After completing an intensive language course you could then take part in another voluntary placement and put your language skills to good use.
Some volunteers decide to do an intensive course in order to improve their language skills enough to then join a project where some knowledge of the language is needed, for example once you’ve brushed up on your French or Spanish you could then join a Journalism project in Togo or a medicine project in mexico.
All language course volunteers will receive a certificate after completing their placement stating the amount of hours and the language studied.

Add-on language coursesThese language courses are ideal if you want to start learning a foreign language or to brush up on your existing skills while also taking part on a volunteer project.
your exact timetable will be agreed on arrival, so the hours fit in with your volunteer placement. you can choose from 5, 14, 30 or 60 hour language course add-ons. We recommend that to fit in a 60-hour add-on course that you are on a placement for at least 12 weeks.
Please be aware that add-on language courses are not available alongside all projects, in particular many conservation projects. Please check with us if you are unsure.
ArABicWe offer Arabic courses in morocco, a north-African country that offers a fascinating first taste of the African continent. Arabic is the official language of morocco and is, therefore, widely spoken.
While taking part in the Arabic language project you’ll be living in rabat, an ancient but cosmopolitan city on the Atlantic coast of morocco. rabat is the political and business capital of the country.
chineSe (mandarin)We offer mandarin chinese language courses in both Shanghai and chengdu. english is widely spoken in both cities; however, by learning some mandarin you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the chinese culture. making an effort to speak the local language will be greatly appreciated.
lessons will take place at a language centre with a qualified language teacher and can be adapted based on the aspects of chinese that interest you the most (e.g. travel, business, literature).
FrenchTake the opportunity to immerse yourself in the French language and fascinating francophone African culture on one of our French language courses in morocco, Senegal or Togo.
you will be living with a French-speaking host family who will encourage you to practise the language every day, while you experience their culture, community and customs.
SPAniShimmerse yourself in Spanish and the fascinating latin American culture on one of our language courses in Argentina, Bolivia, costa rica, ecuador, mexico or Peru.
The courses are tailored to suit your ability. Whether you are a complete beginner or have been learning Spanish for several years, being surrounded by the language every day will help your skills progress in leaps and bounds.

if you really want to immerse yourself in the culture of your host destination, then a course in the local language is for you!
We offer courses in languages that are specific to the region in which you’ll be living and are less widely used throughout the rest of the world. A good understanding of the native language will enable you to really engage with the local people.
YOUR LANGUAGE COURSE: language courses are available in over 20 destinations. you will be assigned your own teacher who will tailor the course to you. The local Projects Abroad staff will also meet with you regularly to discuss how your course is going and assist with any issues that may arise.
YOUR ACCOMMODATION: in most destinations you will live with a local host family who has been carefully selected because they are friendly, welcoming and can provide you with safe and secure accommodation for the duration of your stay. your host family will speak the language you are learning, giving you added opportunities to practise and improve. in a small number of destinations like china and Vietnam, you will live in shared volunteer accommodation in an apartment or volunteer house.
ALL YOUR MEALS: We will ensure that you are provided with three meals a day, including either a packed lunch or lunch provided where you are working or studying.
COMpREhENSIvE SUppORT: We directly employ sizeable staff teams in all of our destinations and they are responsible for ensuring that all aspects of your project run as smoothly as possible. From the moment they meet you at the airport they will be available to show you around the local area, introduce you to your host family and tutor, and be on-call 24/7 if you have any problems.
FLExIbLE START DATE: you choose when and where you want to go and how many weeks you wish to study.

The intensity of language tuition you receive in Costa Rica is pretty incredible. I had 4 hours of lessons a day, one-on-one with my teacher, from Monday to Friday. As it was only the two of us, I was able to direct the lessons towards what most interested me, so we ended up giggling over old Spanish films and bursting into song in turn. The absolute immersion you receive from living with an entirely Spanish-speaking family is an invaluable experience. In terms of the language, it’s almost instinctive to pick it up, but in terms of the connections you make, they stay with you forever.
