ENVIROWALK – Tuesday 23rd August We thank all parents/carers for supporting our annual College Envirowalk. The sponsorship cards have been distributed to all students. Could you please discuss with your child the importance of this sponsorship that goes to providing outstanding resources for your child’s learning environment. Uniform Reminder Students are asked to carefully check that they adhere to the requirements of the College uniform policy. In particular, we ask parents/carers to check items regarding earrings and jewellery. For the girls only one stud is permitted in the lower ear lobe. No earrings are permitted for boys. It is also necessary to remind all students that plastic spacers or keepers have never been part of the College uniform policy. During Terms 2 & 3 the outmost garment on a normal school day is the College blazer. A message for students picking up siblings at Holy Family Primary School Aquinas students are reminded that if they are responsible for taking a brother/sister home in the afternoon to make sure that they are carefully crossing correctly at the lights. Unfortunately Holy Family teachers have reported primary students running after their siblings after the lights have changed. Some Aquinas students are incorrectly meeting their siblings on the street out the front of school instead of picking them up from the pavers as is our policy. No student should be waiting on the grassed area near the bus bay area after school. Students should be waiting for buses in the correct location or walking directly home. Bus Passes / Opal Cards

The bus company has asked us to remind parents/carers that a valid Opal Card must be presented and Tapped ON and OFF when travelling to and from school. Any student who does not have a valid card will be required to pay the correct fare or be fined. School issued Opal cards were distributed in February/March as a replacement to the older style bus passes. Any student who does not have an opal card must apply at www.opal.com.au and to check the details under School Opal Card to see if your child is eligible. Could I ask that you discuss this important process with your son/daughter so that delays in departure are avoided.

We welcome back our WYD16 pilgrims and leaders after a successful journey. We look forward to hearing the outstanding experiences and sharing the wonderful stories attached to their photos. Mr Anthony Hulme Acting Assistant Principal

COMMERCE EXCURSION

On Tuesday 26th July, all of the Year 9 Commerce classes attended an excursion to Miranda Westfield. The day started off with a talk from a representative of Westfield Centre Management. We were informed about business industries and legal structures of Westfield. We learnt about the recent renovations of Miranda Westfield and interesting facts about the shopping centre. For example, there are 380 retailers located in Miranda Westfield which we found very interesting and surprising. We also asked questions about rents paid by different retailers in the centre. After the talk, all of the classes were divided into groups of 3-4. Our task was to interview a store owner/manager of our choice to get an idea about how businesses operate. In our groups we then had to answer more questions about specific shops located in the centre and about the different promotions in the centre. Overall, the Commerce Year 9 excursion was exciting and interesting as we furthered our understanding of the functions of different businesses in one of the Shire’s largest shopping centres.

WYD NEWS

The second week of our pilgrimage began with an early morning arrival in Warsaw, Poland. The day begun with mass in Czestochowa, celebrated in the Jasna Gora Shrine with other Australian bus groups. We were able to see the famous Black Madonna painting and immerse ourselves in Polish culture for the first time. We continued on to Kraków, a city that is rich in history and the host of World Youth Day Celebrations. AGH University was home for the next 8 nights, for us and many other countries. We were spread across the campus with Sydney pilgrims sharing a building, making life easier. Day 10 was spent exploring the beautiful city of Poland as a bus group. We were able to experience the everyday life of the Polish by walking around the town and visiting fresh food markets. We stopped and took time out to reflect and pray in the church of St Francis in the main square of Kraków. Free time was given to us in the main shopping centre of the town where some of us may have spent too much money. One important thing to know about Poland, which we learnt the hard way, is that it can and will rain at any point in time. The summer weather was always hot and humid with a potential risk of wind and rain. Tuesday the 26th of July saw the official beginning of The World Youth Day celebrations with the Opening Mass celebrated by the Bishop of Kraków. Roughly 1 million people gathered together in Blonia Park to participate in this event which was truly amazing. Knowing that the final mass was anticipated to have three times the amount of people became hard to comprehend. At this event, a number of us pilgrims were able to start exchanging our Australian souvenirs for other countries, allowing us to meet new people from all over the world. The next day was spent partaking in catechesis with Bishops from around the world. These events were filled with music, singing, dancing, prayer, confession and inspirational words for all speakers. Day 13 consisted of morning catechesis followed by the first encounter with the Holy Father during the Papal welcome. The energy and excitement of the crowd awaiting the arrival of Pope Francis himself was uplifting. Watching the Pope mobile drive through thousands of cheering people was breathtaking as we were finally in his holy company. He addressed the crowd in Italian which made it difficult to understand, but fortunately our bus Chaplin Fr. Daniel was able to translate his inspiring words for us. The following day saw the third and final day of engaging in catechesis sessions. Free time was given in the afternoon where we broke off into our smaller groups to continue to explore Kraków. Miss Flegg's Duke of Ed nature saw my group take on an eventful 3 hour journey with a constant incline, in the pouring rain, to reach an amazing lookout of the whole city. Other groups visited different sites including the church of The Divine Mercy whilst others spent their time shopping. In the afternoon all pilgrims gathered for the Way of the Cross where the stations of the cross are displayed. The famous World Youth Day Cross, which has visited Aquinas in 2008, was carried in a procession during this service. Day 15 was a memorable day for every single pilgrim within our bus group as we took part in our pilgrimage walk to the site of the vigil and final mass, Campus Miseridorious. The entire walk was around 14km but we cut it short due to the insane heat. Our bus group caught the tram before embarking on a lengthy 6km walk together, in the midday heat. After the several hours of constant walking, we had arrived at the site where we were told our section, A14, was directly behind the altar. You would assume this would be prime position but we were placed behind a warehouse behind the altar, meaning we only got a glimpse of a screen with stunning views of portaloos. We set up our things in preparation for a long night ahead, sleeping on plastic bags and tarps in a grass field shared with thousands of bugs and grasshoppers. The evening concluded with a vigil liturgy with the Pope, where every individual was handed out a candle. Watching flames being shared around to light each other's candles was breathtakingly beautiful to be a part of. The extreme heat of the day quickly disappeared as the sun set which soon turned into unexpected coldness which many were not prepared for. Shivering through the night under a lovely space blanket saw the morning sun rise at 5:30am where the extreme heat was slowly coming back. Today was the official World Youth Day Papal mass which was the conclusion of the pilgrimage. The celebration of the Final Mass of the 31st World Youth Day was conducted by the Holy Father. Pope Francis gave an inspiring homily, in Italian of course, challenging the youth of the world to be witnesses in their own homes. Lack of food, water and sleep mixed with insane heat saw many of us become unwell. Four pilgrims had heat stress and it was best for us to leave mass after communion to prevent any one else becoming sick. We were showering over selves and each other with the free bottles of water given to us to try to cool us down. The journey home was a trek and a half as we walked the full 14km in 5 hours stopping frequently to gain our breath. The extreme heat eventually turned into an electrical storm which was refreshing. The spirit and nature of bus 14 was inspiring and admirable as each and every pilgrim looked out for the other. Our courage and determination to reach the end was motivated by constant support and guidance of all pilgrim leaders, Mr Nastasi and each other. At the same time we heard the announcement from the Pope that the location for the 2019 WYD was to be Panama. With the conclusion of World Youth Day week, we journeyed to Zakopane in the south of Poland, with a stop in St John Paul II's hometown of Wadowice. We viewed the outside of the museum which was his birthplace and boyhood home. The scenic bus trip continued for a few hours until we arrived in Zakopane, our home for the next 3 nights. The surroundings were incredible and represented a typical ski-lodge style village. Day 18 began our 4 days of reflective retreat with group activities allowing us to think about all the life changing opportunities and experiences we encountered. We spent the day in a small area just outside the main town visiting the local church and shops followed by a phenomenal walk through the national park. Being surrounded by nature was calming and peaceful making it easy to reflect. In the afternoon we celebrated mass with one other bus group, in Our Lady of Fatima church which was stunning. The evening concluded with adoration and the option to participate in the sacrament of reconciliation.

‘Enlivened by the Spirit’ 5

Day 19 was another relaxed and peaceful day where we were allowed free time to venture around the main section of Zakopane. We tried new foods and continued to go all out with shopping as always. Once again we had mass at Our Lady of Fatima church with all the bus groups. Our night was spent writing lengthy affirmations for each other which gave individuals confidence and an opportunity to realise their sense of worth. At 9:30am the next day, we packed up and set off on a long bus trip through Slovakia to Austria. Driving through the countryside was relaxing and refreshing to experience a new scenery. After a lunch break and a few stops we eventually arrived in Vienna, Austria at 7pm. We then decided we would dress up for our last night together and we went out for dinner as a bus group. Day 21 started with a morning mass followed by a brief tour around Vienna. We were then allowed free time in our small groups where we visited the main church and admired the architecture. We then spent time shopping for any last minute souvenirs before heading for the airport. Our flight left Vienna airport at 10:45pm to arrive in Dubai at 7am. We then left Dubai for Sydney at 10am via Bangkok. After 23 remarkable days, we arrived back in Sydney at 8.30am on Sunday the 7th of August. World Youth Day has been then most incredible experience and is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The days were long and exhausting but most definitely extremely worthwhile for our spiritual formation. I am forever grateful for being given the chance to embark on this journey with the continual support and guidance of every member of bus 14. My faith has grown and developed through this pilgrimage whilst creating life long friendships. Olivia Clark

NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES

Attention Year 7 students: Are you an independent learner? Do you have a particular passion or interest that you would like to learn more about? Are you creative and like to think outside the square? Are you organised? If you answered, “Yes” to all of these questions then Night of the Notables might just be for you. What is NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES? Night of the Notables is the study of someone notable who has made a difference to our lives and the progress of humanity. It is student centred and focuses on personal interest. Night of the Notables is such a wonderful program for the students for so many reasons: It features suitable role models for gifted and talented children and it is a valuable source of adult role models,

mentors and individuals who pursue their lives and work with passion

It allows students to enjoy researching something they are interested in. Best learning occurs when it is driven by interest. This leads students out of their comfort zone and helps nurture autonomous learners.

It allows students go beyond the factual research to involve themselves personally and identify with the person of eminence.

It enables the students to recognise and enjoy greater self-esteem about their own gifts and talents supported by their families and on show to the school community.

'Notables' values and affirms diversity in cultures, religious and national backgrounds by supporting and affirming an individual's family, cultural and ethnic background publicly

The programme is run during school time in the library and students are expected to catch up on any work missed.

A presentation night will be arranged for later in the term or early next term when I am able to finalise a date on our calendar.

If you are interested in this opportunity please email me at: [email protected] to register your interest. All applications will be considered in consultation with your subject teachers and ten students will be offered a place in the programme.

Parents, please feel free to email me should you have any other questions regarding the programme.

Careers News

Year 10

Applications are now available for Year 10 students who wish to apply for a TAFE course as part of their HSC. EVET students (external vocational education and training) usually attend the TAFE or other provider one afternoon a week. They will be required to catch up on the missing lessons, and find their own way to and from their course (usually by bus and train). These courses are usually non-ATAR courses, and preference is given to students who are planning a vocational pathway, not a university pathway. They are highly competitive, and an application does not guarantee acceptance into the course.

If you wish to discuss this further, please email me or call me. Applications need to be returned to me prior to the end of August.

Year 12

UAC books have now been distributed to all year 12 students. If you were away, and need to collect one, please see either Mrs Vukovic or myself.

SSCCC Basketball Report

On Monday, 27th June, Aquinas sent four basketball teams to Sutherland Basketball Stadium to participate in the

SSCCC Basketball Gala Day. They played against teams from schools such as Bosco Engadine, St Patrick’s College

Sutherland, De La Salle College Caringbah, OLMC Burraneer, and Freeman Catholic College. The winning team in

each division would be named SSCCC Champions, and represent the entire southern region in the Combined

Catholic Colleges Championship, which is to be played on Thursday 20th October in Penrith.

The junior girls team consisted of Kayla Khoury, Kristy McLaughlan, Jaicy Regan, Skye Mulholland, Chloe

Cosgrove, Elena Cuenca, Elizabeth Walker, Amelia Kirgan, Emily Lane, Grace Cameron, Jasmin Hatter, Caitlin

Monk and Mackenzie Glasby. These girls were undefeated all day, and won the Grand Final against St Patrick’s

Sutherland convincingly.

The junior boys team, Michael Kerle, Mitchell McDonough, Sam Blewett, Brayden Roeger, Declan Woolnough,

Thomas Saad, Kristian Arndt, Julian Ricci and Brohden Souris were also undefeated all day, and overcame a tough

St Patrick’s team in the Grand Final to secure the win.

The senior girls team, Deanna Kalivitis, Kalina Englezos, Kadlen Vasilj, Ruby Cole, Alexandra Bolton, Sabrina

Mac, Tahlia Englezos, Jalessa Vasilj, Sophie Callaghan, Grace Donnelly, Madison Evans and Halle Cambey

suffered an early loss to St Pat’s, but came back strong to win the rest of their games AND face St Pat’s again in the

Grand Final – a game that they fought hard for, and won.

The senior boys team consisted of Christian Ricci, Zachary Figueroa, Jaxon Hatter, Aiden Puse, Michael Monk, Zac

Wade, Lachlan Thibault-Bugden, Ethan Bablis, George Panasetis and Christian Basic made a slow start and went

down in their first match of the day, however recovered well to come back and win the remainder of their games and

come face to face with St Patrick’s College in the Grand Final. In a tight and hard fought match, the boys overcame

St Pats and also won their Grand Final.

This is a huge achievement, one of the only times that one school has won the Grand Final in all four divisions to be

crowned SSCCC Champions for every age group. This is a testament to the hard work, dedication and team work of

all players involved as well as their coaches, Mrs Reyes and Mr Broady. Aquinas has now earned the privilege of

sending these four talented basketball teams to Penrith in October. Congratulations and good luck!

AQUINAS CATHOLIC COLLEGE PARENT FUNDRAISING AND SOCIAL GROUP

ENVIROWALK 2016

TUESDAY 23RD

AUGUST 2016 WHAT IS ENVIROWALK?

Envirowalk is an important community event in our school calendar and involves all students from Years 7 to 12. The main purposes of the day is to raise funds for a major school resource and also to contribute to our local community by helping to clean up some of the beach areas from Wanda Sand Dunes to Shelley Beach. Funds raised in 2016 will be used in the development of the new College prayer space.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Being a walkathon style event, the students are asked to raise money by seeking sponsorship for them to complete the 10km event. Buses will transport the students to and from the walk site within normal school hours, College sports uniform must be worn on the day. The students will walk in supervised groups and are asked to bring gloves and a plastic bag and to wear hats and sunscreen.

Immediately after the walk a sausage sizzle and games afternoon will be held at Shelley Beach.

Could Year 7 students please bring Tomato Sauce).

Donations can be left at the College office from today.
