The word f l y descends from the IE root  pleu  which means “to flow.” 1  Paronyms include plover (a wading bird), Pluto, flow, flue, flood, fledgling, fley, fletcher, flight, fowl, fleet, float, flotsam, flotilla, flutter, flit, and fluster.
