AQoL2018Istanbul: Keynote Speaker

Çiğdem Polatoğlu (Baytin)

Department of Architecture, Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul

Born in 1964, Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Polatoğlu (Baytin) studied at the Faculty of Architecture, Mimar Sinan University. She began her academic career as a Research Assistant at the Department of Architecture, Yildiz Technical University (YTU). She obtained her Master’s in 1987,

and PhD Degree in 1994, both from Istanbul Technical University (ITU), with her PhD thesis entitled “An Approach to New Building Designs in Historical Environments; A Method for Istanbul”. She was appointed Assistant Professor at YTU in 1994.

She has taught a number of undergraduate and graduate courses including “Architectural Design Studio 3 & 5 & Final Project”, “Architectural Approaches in New Building Designs in Existing Environments”, “Impact Analysis in Visual Environment”, “Building Evaluation”, “Building Theory and Design I”, “Basic Design” in YTU. She also thought “Space analysis”, “Fundamentals of Architecture” in a private university’s interior design department in English, while still conducting Architectural Design 5. She has been and is advisor of a number of Masters programme (16 thesis and 2 international thesis) and doctorate students (5 thesis). She is especially interested in and worked on a number of applications about “Architectural Design”; upon which the design of “School of Foreign Language” of YTU at Davutpasa Campus area is realized.

She has won several international awards, such as, International Competition of Ideas for Developing The Surroundings of The Roman Aqueduct of Segovia; Proposals for The Third Millenium, Segovia-Spain, 1998 (Mansion); and supervised, M. Alessia Agnuzzi (LLP-Erasmus), “Social Sustainability in Sulukule; New Housing and Development of City Walls in İstanbul”, 5th year Graduation Thesis and Project, Catania University, “Ordine Degli Architetti, Pianificatori, Paesaggisti e Conservatori Della Provincia di Torino” Category C, Master degree student Graduation Project award, 2012.

She has been in TU/e – Netherlands and Brno Technology University-Czech Republic and Florence on behalf of LLP-Erasmus Teaching Staff Mobility program at 2007, 2008 and 2009. She gave lectures on “New Building Designs in İstanbul from 60’s to Present Day” and “Traditional Turkish Houses; sample of İstanbul - Süleymaniye” and participated in an exhibition in Urban Wastelands Conference (TU/e-2007) with the students’ works of her course; “New Building Designs in Historical Environments”. She is a team member of an ERASMUS Intensive Program between Yildiz Technical University (Turkey), University of Stavanger (Norway), Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) 2010-2013; “Cultural Layers of Public Space”. She has been critic jury member in national competitions and international summer schools, final projects and IP project studies. She is also the consultant of Istanbul Greater City Municipality in the Department of Urban Design from 2013. During her 32 years in the university she had numerous administrative duties, including the current Chair of YTU Architecture Department, appointed in November 2017.
