MEMBERS’ LIBRARY TUTORIAL

Welcome to the New APWA Members’ Library (version 1.0)

APWA is excited to introduce this new benefit–The Members’ Library. Because education is our mission, we believe this varied library of education resources is one of the most significant benefits we can provide to our members. Education programs that used to cost as much as $175 each are now yours to browse at your convenience 24/7, as often as you like, without charge.

Our first priority has been to make the Members’ Library available to you as quickly as possible. But, as noted above, we have designated this version 1.0. Improving navigation, search, and viewing functions for the library will be an ongoing process. Updates and new features will be announced as they become available.

To help you find and navigate through version 1.0 of the library, here are some helpful hints.

Finding the Library on the APWA WebsiteThere are four ways to get to the Members’ Library. The easiest way to access the library is from the Quick Links area of APWA’s home page at www.apwa.net.

A second way to access the library from the APWA home page (www.apwa.net) is to use the Hover Menu under the Discover APWA tab to find the library listed in the Resources section.

The third path for access is through the Members Only page at http://www2.apwa.net/MembersOnly/. You can find the Members’ Library link in the center of the page listed between Member Tools and Membership Benefits.

The fourth way you can easily find the library is to bookmark the library URL, which is http://www.apwa.net/MembersLibrary.

Navigating the Library

Sign In To get in the door of the library, you’ll first need to sign in using your APWA username and password. If you have not yet created your APWA online account, just click on “Create an Account” and follow the instructions. The process only takes a couple of minutes, but you will need your membership ID number. If you do not know your ID number or have forgotten your password, follow the relevant link on the page to get the information from APWA’s Member Services Department.

Your Home PageOnce you have signed in, you will come to the library home page, which includes all recently added resources, as well as a subject matter menu in the navigation pane on the right (Right Nav). Please note, the best way to return to the home page of the library at any time is to click on the HOME link at the bottom right corner of the navigation menu.

Finding the Resources You WantYou can search for education resources by subject or by delivery method.

By SubjectThe library is categorized by subject area. To navigate, use the Right Nav pane to locate the subject area you are looking for. Some of the subjects have subcategories that further help you refine your search.

Hint: Once inside a category, use Ctrl F to search the categoryfor specific words. You will only be able to search topicsfrom inside the library. The search bar in the top right corner of www.apwa.net will not search items within the library.

By Delivery MethodThe five tabs located under the screen player represent the five delivery methods for the various library resources: Read, Listen, Watch, Buy, and Events. Click on the tabs to see the newest items in all categories for each delivery method, or choose a subject area (e.g., Transportation) from the Right Nav menu, then click on a Delivery Method tab to see only resources for the selected subject area.

The Tabs

Read – The library includes Reporter articles related to each subject area found in the Right Nav pane. You will also find several APWA publications available for free download under the Read tab. While reading online, you may return to the Library by clicking the “back” arrow in the upper left corner of the publication window.

Listen – The Listen tab is a gateway to a collection of hundreds of APWA annual Congress sessions that have been recorded over the last few years. In most cases, these sessions are audio only; however, some contain slides that you can follow along by clicking the arrow in the bottom right corner to advance slides one at a time, or use the arrow in the left corner to return to a previous slide. Podcasts can also be found under the Listen tab.

Watch – The Watch tab includes select Click, Listen & Learn webcasts as well as videos APWA has produced pertaining to the chosen subject area.

Buy – In case you don’t find what you are looking for in the library related to the subject you are researching, the Buy tab allows you to check out the APWA Store to see if what you are looking for is available for purchase.

Events –The Events tab is an interactive calendar of links to information about scheduled, live, national APWA events.

System RequirementsAs with all technologies, there are minimum system requirements for viewing items in the library–you’ll find these requirements by clicking on the System Requirements link at the bottom of the Right Nav pane.

In general, you will need: • Internet Explorer 7.0 or any Mozilla-based browser • JavaScript Enabled • A screen resolution of at least 1024x768 • Adobe (formally Macromedia) Flash Player 8.0+ • RTMP Port 1935 (required for streaming)

Need to update your software? Free updates for your software are available for download by visiting the manufacturers’ websites. • Adobe Flash at www.Adobe.com • Java at www.java.com

Note: A known problem is that iPads will not support Flash players; therefore, you will not be able to listen to Congress sessions, read Reporter articles, or view some Click, Listen & Learn programs on an iPad. We are working to resolve the situation by creating a universal player for all of these delivery methods. We will announce when the content becomes accessible on iPads.

Feedback and SupportWe welcome your comments and feedback so we can make your experience the best it can be. To provide feedback or receive support, simply click on the Feedback and Support Button on the bottom right corner of your screen or call 800-848-2792.

We hope you use this new benefit often and find it very useful. Products will be added to the library regularly, so check back frequently for the newest additions and the latest enhancements to the library.
