MarlinkAddsCapacityandCoveragetoitsSealinkVSATNetworkintheIndianOceanRegionApril4,2018 ‐Marlinkhasaddedanewsatellite to itsglobalmulti‐bandSealinknetwork, significantlyexpanding its footprint in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and introducing even more Ku‐band VSATcapacitytoenablehigh‐speedbroadbandconnectivityforshipstransitingsouthernroutesbetweenAsiaandAfrica,inadditiontofishingvesselsoperatingeastofAfrica’scoastlineandouttowardstheMaldivesandSeychelles.Thenewcapacitycomesfromasatellitepositionedingeostationaryorbitatalongitudeof110°East.ItsadditiontotheSealinknetworknowgivesMarlinkfouroverlappingbeamsincertainareasoftheIOR,ensuringthatcapacityisalwaysavailableforitscustomerstomeettheirdiverseconnectivityneeds. Viasat and Eutelsat closed abroadbandjointventureinMarch2017thatgaveViasatjointownershipoftheKA‐SATsatellite.ThejointventurealsoenabledViasattocreateanewconsumerretailserviceinEurope,whichiscurrentlyinearly‐stageoperationsandfocusesonbringingenhancedbroadbandinternetserviceplanstoselectEuropeancountries.U.S.DoDContractsFullO3bMEOBeamandServicesfromSESGovernmentSolutionsApril9,2018‐SESGovernmentSolutionshasbeenawardedaUSD24.8millionmulti‐yearcontractbytheU.S.DepartmentofDefense(DoD).Underthenewagreement,SESGSwillprovidetheUnitedStatesAfricaCommand(U.S.AFRICOM)withhighthroughput,low‐latencymanagedsatellitecommunicationsservicesintheareasoftheiroperations.SESGSwillbedeliveringahighlycomplexcustomizedend‐to‐endsolution,whichwillprovidededicated,flexibleandsecureconnectivitytoendusersandthosewhosupportthem.Themanaged services include low‐latency high throughput capacity, gateway services,monitoring andcontrol, satellite terminals, field service support, as well as terrestrial backhaul. The high throughputcapacityisdeliveredthroughanentire432MHzfullysteerableMediumEarthOrbit(MEO)beam,allowingU.S.AFRICOMtomeetevolvingreal‐timeoperationalneeds.ViasatHelpsBridgetheDigitalDivideinMexicowith'CommunityWi‐Fi'ServiceApril 9, 2018 ‐ Viasat Inc. announced itwill offer a satellite‐enabledWi‐Fi hotspot service – known as'CommunityWi‐Fi' – tonearly all ofMexico.Thenewservicewill bring an affordableWi‐Fi experiencedirectly to consumer's devices, where historically internet service was unavailable or unusable. Jean‐ClaudeTshipamastartedhiscareer inthe telecommunications industry in the 2000s.Hewas the Commercial Director of Celtel inDR Congo,DirectorofsalesanddistributionatDigicelGroupandlaterDirectorofsalesanddistributionforAfricaatMicrosoftCorporation.Morerecently,heservedasCEOofCanal+inDRCongo.Hesitsasanon‐executiveDirectorontheBoardofEquityBankinKenya.InhisnewroleasCEOofBroadbandinAfrica,Jean‐ClaudeTshipama’s coremissionwill be to ensure that Eutelsat’s broadband business is successfully deployedacrossAfrica,drawingonthein‐orbitresourcesoftheAlYah3satellitewhichwilloperatetheserviceafterenteringoperationalserviceduringnextsummer.TheoperationoftheAlYah3satellitewillbefollowednextyearbythelaunchoftheKONNECTsatellite.UnitedLaunchAllianceNamesJohnElbonChiefOperatingOfficerApril26,2018‐UnitedLaunchAlliance(ULA)namedveteranaerospaceindustryexecutiveJohnElbonasitsnextChiefOperatingOfficer,succeedingDanCollins,whohadservedasCOOsinceULA’s founding in2006 and retired early this year. Elbon joins ULA from The Boeing Companywhere he served as VicePresidentandGeneralManager,SpaceExploration,adivisionofBoeingDefense,Space&Security.Hewasresponsible for the strategic direction of Boeing's civil space programs and support ofNASA programssuch as the International Space Station (ISS), Commercial Crew Development program and the SpaceLaunchSystem.
