TRANSCRIPT
I grew up racing motocross all over the South-East. My dad was my crew chief, coach, mentor and best friend. Later in life we became business partners and worked together until the day he died. While I cherish the time I spent building a business with him, my fondest memories are from the time we spent racing.
My first event with POC was the Tribute to LeMans at California Speedway in 2004. My son was not quite 2 years old. I remember thinking, “I hope he grows up to love racing as much as I do.”
I raced with the club for a few years then the economy plummeted and took my racing budget along with it. Thankfully things got good again and I was able to get back into racing. I was very pleased to see many familiar faces. The one thing that really piqued my interest was all of the father/son and father/daughter teams – Anders & Alexandra Hainer, Marc, Max & Will Kolbe, Vali & Ana Predescu and Alex & Malcom Van Halen. And now Rusty & Devin West. I have been waiting for years to go racing with my son. When he turned 16 I couldn’t wait to get him on the track. This past weekend at Spring Mountain he earned his PDS license and will be starting Time Trials at the Streets of Willow next month.
As my son progresses through the ranks, I catch myself smiling and beaming with pride at his accomplishments – it’s the same goofy look Anders, Marc, Vali and Alex have on their faces when their kids get out of their cars after a great run. It simply does not get any better.
As is the circle of life, all of our children eventually leave the nest and go on to make their way through this crazy world. With any luck they all will look back on these shared moments and think “I can’t wait to do this with my kids some day”
One of our esteemed members managed to get himself stuck in the exit tunnel while leaving the track on Sunday...it took several fire fighters along with their truck to extricate the poor fellow from his plight. The Comp Committee will be meeting to decide whether a 13/13 should be imposed. Thanks to Larry Hasse for these wonderful photos capturing this historic event.
About an hour outside of Las Vegas resides the sleepy little town of Pahrump, Nevada. Originally known for legalized prostitution and the world famous Bunny Ranch, Pahrump is now home to Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club.
Spring Mountain is one of those places most only dream about. It is the ultimate mixture of Country Club, Race Circuit and Gated community living. Imagine combining Pebble Beach with Laguna Seca, dropping it in the middle of the desert and surrounding it with multi-million dollar homes and condos. Yep, that’s where our beloved Porsche Owners Club held the fourth round of its club racing series.
What a remarkable weekend it was. While the weather was a bit warm (it is the middle of the Nevada desert - just sayin’) the event was fantastic. The highly technical circuit has a bit of everything and proved challenging for even the most seasoned of drivers. This made for some spectacular competition. Both the Orange and Red race groups were filled with thrilling wheel to wheel combat. The closest of which was the Orange Race on Sunday where Gene Sigal, Anders Hainer, Bryan Van Noy and Matthew Hollander fiercely battled for twelve laps with Gene inching out Anders by a mere 0.137 seconds for the win. During impound, Gene, Anders and Matt all three commented that it was one of the most fun races they’ve ever had. Knowing how many races these three have under their belts, that speaks volumes.
The PDS drivers got to experience the wonders of this great track as well. It was fantastic to see their progression throughout the weekend. The improvements in driving were clearly reflected in their quicker lap times with most drivers shaving off more than 20 seconds per lap. This is a testament to how well the PDS program works and how talented our instructors truly are.
As with the Cup Races, the Time Trial sessions are always sure to amaze – this weekend was no exception. Drivers of all skill levels racing against the clock, pushing man (or woman) and machine beyond their limits lap after lap. It’s like qualifying over and over again. Staying on the ragged edge is both physically and mentally demanding. The data tells the whole story with Kevin Roush driving John Cahalin’s 991 GT3R to a blistering 2:16.500 which was a full 4 seconds quicker than the fastest lap set by Eric Olberz on Saturday in his new GT3R. That lap around this circuit is pure art in motion.
Regardless of the run group, all POC drivers and their guests got a chance to experience a wonderful weekend. Great friends, comradery and competition at a world class venue – Spring Mountain had it all.
