The Holocaust Remembrance Day is a national holiday that was created

by Yom Hashoah in 1959. The Holocaust was the systematic, organization of

the running of a government, state-sponsored persecution, and murder of

approximately six million Jews. This includes 1.5 million Jewish children in

Europe by the Nazi regime and its collaborators that took place between

1933-1954. All of this was occurring during World War 2, in Germany and

other countries that the Nazi were in control. The way they celebrate it in Is-

rael, on the eve of Yom Hashoah, a siren sound goes off, followed by an offi-

cial memorial service, the prime minister, president, army officials and the

service. This is different when compared to how the Americans celebrate it

currently. The holocaust remembrance day marks the liberation of the Ausch-

witz-Birkenau death camp in 1945. Remembrance day is on April 27th.

Earth Day, we’ve all heard about it. It is the day

which is dedicated to contributing to the environment. To

most of us, we have heard about this day since we were

in kindergarten. Yet, do any of us know how it all started?

The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. It was during

the time of the hippies, Vietnam War, student anti-war

movements, and the birth of eco-friendliness. During this

time Americans didn’t care about the environment. They

didn’t know about the harmful effects of pollution. Facto-

ries would let out smoke and nuclear waste. This idea

now-a-day is an atrocity but before it was a norm. Gay-

lord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, is the found-

er of Earth Day. He proposed the idea of a day to teach

the nation about the environment. Students were a huge

influence in this movement. They spread the word. Now

Earth Day is not only celebrated in the United States but

around the world. Therefore, on April 22, help take care

of the Earth. Let it become a habit.
