Hours: Monday thru Friday 8am-5pm. Danvers Council on Aging
25 Stone Street, Danvers, MA 01923
New Men’s Group The Danvers Council on Aging is happy to announce the creation of a new Men’s Club. This group will provide an opportunity for men to get together and discuss issues of interest, create interesting dialogue and develop support and camaraderie among peers. This friendly group of men will also share a catered meal and frequently invite speakers to present on various topics. The first group will meet on Thursday April 27, at 5pm at the Danvers Senior Center. There is no charge to participate but there is a charge of $10 per meeting for the meal. The meal is catered by Henry’s of Beverly and will consist of Chicken Cacciatore, penne pasta, Caesar salad and Tiramisu dessert cups! Reservations for meal are required by Monday April 24th. The first speaker will be Danvers resident Thomas Ayers who has written a book about his experience in Vietnam (published in March 2016). Come and hear his story of how a young man deals with being drafted into the US Army in the sixties, facing the challenges of Boot Camp and Advanced Infantry Training. His story travels from the classroom to the jungle and rice paddies where he faces life-changing actions and moments that have been imbedded in his memory forever. If transportation is a problem, please call Lorene at 978-762-0208 to arrange for a possible volunteer driver for transportation. Hope to see you there!! The Evening Dinner— Thursday, April 27th at 5pm. The menu, provided by Henry’s, will be Chicken Cacciatore with Penne Pasta, Caesar Salad & Tiramisu Dessert Cup. Cost: $9 for FDCOA members and $11 for non members. Tickets are on sale now. Travel Chef— April 18th at 12pm. The entrée will be French crepes, turkey, spinach & swiss crepe, creamy mushroom sauce, wild rice pilaf, peas & asparagus & parker house roll & Boston cream cake. Suggested donation $2.25 per person. Reservations by April 14th at 10am please.
Get Out and Vote Did you know that the Beverly Bank has opened a new branch at 29 Elm Street in Danvers. You could help the Danvers Council on Aging become the lucky recipient of a $2,500, $1,500 or $1,000 donation! All you have to do is visit the branch sometime before April13th and cast your vote for Danvers Council on Aging. The top 3 vote getter (out of the 5 non-profits nominated) will receive the donations! The winner will be announced at the ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday April 13th! Please help us to continue our important work by casting your vote to help us receive this generous donation. Notice of Increase—Due to the rising cost of operating our transportation program, the Danvers Council on Aging Board of Directors has voted to institute an increase in the suggested donation from the current $2 per R/T in town donation to $3 per R/T. Outside of Danvers fees will increase from the $4 donation to $5 round trip. In fiscal year 2016 over 15,330 rides were provided for medical, recreational, shopping and other needs. Unfortunately, donations have decreased while ridership has increased. We recognize our transportation program as one of the most important needs of the senior population. In order to continue to provide this valuable service we need to ask for your help. This increase will not be instituted until April 1st 2017. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your ability to afford, please contact Pam Parkinson. Financial assistance may be available. Please refer to page 5 for more detailed explanation of fee structure for all transportation services. For ease of donations, we will be offering seniors the option to purchase a donation punch card for $30. You may purchase a donation card at the front desk or by calling Lorene at 978-762-0208.

LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUP: We regularly meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Bring a friend to our April meeting! On April 13th at 10:30am, Gayle Yarnall will share about the Perkins Brail & Talking Book Library. Gayle is totally blind and has been a Talking Book Library patron for almost 50 years. The Perkins Braille and Talking Book Library provides audio and large print books as well as access to over 200 newspapers over the phone and audio described DVDs containing movies and TV shows. Gayle will show how easy it is to keep reading your favorite books and magazines by demonstrating a free, easy to use digital player. The Talking Book Library delivers books, magazines and movies, in a format that is accessible to anyone who can’t read print or hold a book, directly to your door at no cost to you. Applications and assistance will be available during the presentation. This group is for those experiencing any type of vision loss ranging from a small degree of vision loss to those who are totally blind. We welcome anyone who is curious about what the group has to offer or has any questions. CHALLENGES OF LIVING ALONE (CLA): The Challenges of Living Alone group is open to anyone looking for support in successful solo-survival; we meet regularly on the 4th Thursday of each month from 1 – 2 pm.
On April 27th, we will be taking the opportunity to consider our feelings and preferences for the future by using a free resource available through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in California called the Conversation Project. From their website:
“The Conversation Project is dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care. We developed the original Conversation Starter Kit as a useful tool to help people have conversations with their family members or other loved ones about their wishes regarding end-of-life care. The Conversation Project is dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care. Too many people are dying in a way they wouldn’t choose, and too many of their loved ones are left feeling bereaved, guilty, and uncertain. It’s time to transform our culture so we shift from not talking about dying to talking about it. It’s time to share the way we want to live at the end of our lives. And it’s time to communicate about the kind of care we want and don’t want for ourselves. We believe that the place for this to begin is at the kitchen table—not in the intensive care unit—with the people we love, before it’s too late. Together we can make these difficult conversations easier. We can make sure that our own wishes and those of our loved ones are expressed and respected. If you’re ready to join us, we ask you: Have you had the conversation?”
Bereavement Loss and Change Support Group Wednesdays from 1:30-3pm
Support group for people who have experienced the death of a loved one and who want to understand the grieving process, find comfort, healing, and more meaning in their lives. Nancy Downey, Leader.

Popcorn and a Movie Join us on Tuesday, April 4th at 1 PM for “Loving” – Interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving fell in love and were married in 1958. They had grown up in Central Point, a small town in Virginia that was more integrated than surrounding areas in the American South. Yet it was the state of Virginia, where they were making their home and starting a family, that first jailed and then banished them. Richard and Mildred relocated with their children to the inner city of Washington, D.C.
While relatives made them feel welcome there, the more urban environment did not feel like home to them, and ultimately, the pull of their roots in Virginia would spur Mildred to try to find a way back. Their civil rights case, “Loving vs. Virginia,” went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry. Richard and Mildred returned home and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since. Based on a true story. Rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for thematic elements. Please sign up at the front desk or call the senior center at 978-762-0208 if you plan on attending.

Danvers Public Health Nurse Holding Diaper Drive Benefitting Danvers Families in Need
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. In recognition of this, the Danvers Health Department will be sponsoring a Diaper Drive benefitting Danvers families. Did you know 1 in 3 families in America struggle to afford diapers for their children? A lack of diapers has many negative outcomes for children and families’ health, economic and emotional welfare, and educational opportunities. According to the National Diaper Bank Network, “Women with diaper need also reported more difficulty with stress management, depression and coping with trauma – which can negatively affect a child’s health and development”. Increased stress and depression can in turn increase the chances of abuse.
Location and Hours There are three donation boxes located in Town:
Town Hall, 1 Sylvan St., Main Entry Danvers Senior Center, 25 Stone St., Main Entry
Peabody Institute Library of Danvers, 15 Sylvan St, Main Entry Donations of unopened diapers/wipes can be dropped off April 4-April 28 during each facility’s regular business hours. All diaper sizes are needed, from newborn to size six. All diapers/wipes collected will be distributed to Danvers homeless and People to People Food Pantry in Danvers. For further information, contact Public Health Nurse, Judith Ryan, at 978-762-0208
