Could there be any other time of the year that is more dreaded, than the time of year when your skills, performance, and ethics are evaluated and rated? It is not the most comfortable feeling and is not a meeting most of us look forward to. Some less than others. This is not only the case for employees, but for managers and supervisors too. On one hand you are being evaluated and on the other hand you are doing the evaluation. What if I have to give a bad evaluation? What if I get a bad evaluation? End-of-year reviews are not supposed to be stressful, even if your performance was not highly successful. Performance Reviews are methods that allow managers to give guidance and set goals for their employees. These goals are tools to help the employees grow. It is also a time when the employee can express the tools they need to reach those goals. This is an investment both by the company and by the employees, so they both will be successful. Each Performance Review should be viewed as an opportunity to help improve yourself and reach your goals. That is why our new Performance Evaluation Process is goal orientated and is focused on encouraging employees to succeed within their positions. So, when it’s your turn to sit in the “hot seat” remember that this is an opportunity to set goals for your future and your future success is determined on how well you accomplish those goals. success leading By now you have begun to notice that our store signs have a different look. The new signing program is web based, which will allow us to access the program and print signs on-site. The signs will continue to be uploaded from our headquarters office and Lydia Meuller will continue to support your sign requests here at Lejeune. This transitions from the old Stylus signs to the new ACCESSVIA signs will take time, but with Lydia at the helm it should be smooth sailing. The new signing software is the first of many Headquarters’ initiatives that will help us continue our branding efforts within our Exchanges and Marine Marts. STONE BAYGrand Opening The Stone Bay Marine Mart officially opened their doors February 23, 2013. The store hosted the official ribbon cutting ceremony and served lunch to five hundred Marines & Sailors to celebrate the opening. There was a tremendous amount of team work and long hours put into the opening of the store. The store employees are excited to have a brand new facility that has the ability to offer a larger variety of merchandise to the military men and women of Stone Bay. With the

growing population at Stone Bay a new facility was definitely needed. Sonia Graham, the Marine Mart’s Manager, expressed her gratitude to those who attended the event and to those who supported her store in preparation of the opening.

To all of you...a HUGE THANK YOU!!! This past year was one for the record books. All of you are doing a super job taking care of our customers and each other. We are in the people business, and to take care of people, we need great people working for us...and boy do we ever!!! I only wish I could articulate how much each and every single one of you are appreciated. Life should be all about bringing joy to others. Each of you have that opportunity each day many times over. You will never know how much a simple smile and thank you can mean to a customer or co-worker. Kindness is a virtue with unlimited dividends. Thank you for being kind and thank you for all you do each and every day. Times are uncertain at the moment. Dare I use bad words like “sequestration” or “furlough”. I only know one thing for certain at the moment, and that is that nothing is certain. No one can say what happens next with absolute certainty. What we do know is that tuition assistance for MCCS employees has been stopped. Pay raises, bonuses, and all discretionary spending for incentive awards has been suspended. No one knows for certain how long this suspension will last. There is nothing currently on the scope that leads me to think that MCX employees will be furloughed, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will not happen as things change daily. We are busy completing performance reviews. We will also complete personnel action forms for those employees deserving of pay increases and/or bonuses based on last year’s performance. The day the suspension is lifted, should it be lifted, we will process all personnel actions immediately. In the meantime, we are looking for other ways to work within the guidelines and still demonstrate our sincere appreciation! Hang in there!

Markus Shannon was born and raised in Jacksonville, NC. His father retired from the Navy and decided to continue living in Jacksonville to be closer to family and church. This allowed Marcus and his two sisters the opportunity to grow in the Jacksonville community. Markus began working with the Retail Division on November 26, 2011 and currently holds a position as a Store Worker for Midway Park & Tarawa Terrace Marine Marts. Markus enjoys the diversity of his co-workers. He also enjoys interacting with customers and listening to their stories while he is working. When Markus is not working he is playing basketball, planning his college career, and attending church where he is the audio and visual specialist. He hopes that his experience in Retail and his college degree will help him continue to grow within Marine Corps Community Services. In the meantime Markus is working diligently towards earning an Operations Associate position. He feels that MCCS can and will provide him with many lifelong career opportunities. Markus plans to keep working hard, learning, and experiencing all that the Retail Division has to offer. Good luck Markus on your journey, development, and success.
