John Horton

Prez says - from MaySummer is coming, and I hope not with avengeance. The BEAT trip is history and wasvery enjoyable; Armand LeCasse joined me withthe TR6, which ran flawlessly for over 400 miles. There were about 150 cars at the event. Asusual I did not win a raffle prize, third time in arow.

I will not be at the May meeting as I have to be inCalifornia on Tuesday. Kathy will hold forth.Marty should have the revised bylaws in thisissue for your review. In the June meeting wewill either vote yes or no on them.

The British breakfast runs will be on summerhours: meet at 07:00 leave 07:30 - 32nd & SheaBlvd. Try a run out. Another note: Pete Petersondrove away from my shop with I dare sayprobably the only Arizona TR3 with gas shockson the rear. And a big smile. I have final slightmodifications to make in tube size. Then the jigswill be fabricated to produce the kits. I haveabout 150 hours off and on designing them.

Kathy is working on a list of events, and membervolunteers have signed up for a couple. See herand sign up to host one. I personally would liketo see another parade out to the Mining Campbarbeque restaurant for dinner. Anyoneinterested? Other events have been forwarded tothe DCTRA by Shirley Blahak.

I intend to meet with the recorder at the oldmeeting place and try to get us back there. Noluck setting up a meeting yet. I will keep youinformed.

We will try to be at the June breakfast run andthe meeting. Remember, drive with a smile - thepolice won’t know what you are up to!

A Great Day Out(Playing with the cars)

“No!!! I amnot going toget intoanother car! Ilove this one– and I amgoing to rideback in it!”

Well, this iswhat somedrivers hadto put up withafter lunchbreak onSaturday,March 8,aftersuggestingswapping cars. 17 German high school studentsand two teachers got a ride in one of the

classical cars organized by Craig Kenyon.Several Triumphs and other brands (likeJaguars, Alfa Romeos, Porsches) met on thatrather chilly morning at Einstein’s Bagel Shopin Chandler to pick up the kids and go toTortilla Flats. The kids got even more excitedafter Craig handed out roadbooks and theywere officially appointed co-pilots – definitelythe time to get out the cool sunglasses...

Time passed really quickly on the ride out to

Tortilla Flats. Most students and drivers dug intoa late real American breakfast, browsed throughthe gift shop, and then got ready to enjoy the rideback, now under a bright blue sky. Somestudents had already fallen in love with “their”

cars –nothing couldhave madethem try adifferent one.

Everyonehad a blaston the wayback –especiallythe twoGermanteachers whokept trying tofollow a guyin a redTriumph

(rumour has it it was Craig), and whose newfavorite phrase since then has been “pedal to the

metal”...

Thanks again, Craig, for putting so much workin preparing the event; we loved it (even thosewith the bugs between their teeth)!!

Technical ArticlePedal Pushers...

Braking: Practice the “limo stop.” Brake releaseis absolutely critical to driving quick, smooth laps, and the last 20% of your release motion is themost important. Train the muscles in your ankleto release the brakepedal slowly andsmoothly. Keep yourheel on the floor!Acceleration: Thethrottle you applywhen the stop lightturns green can havea huge effect on howyou exit turn 4 duringyour next track day.Just as with brakingyour ankle and footmuscles must betrained (or retrained).a perfect inverse of proper brake pedal release, the first 20% of throttle application is the mostimportant.

Next time you’re on the open road, practicethrottle smoothness. Become aware of howmuch your RPMs increase when the mere weightof your foot touches the gas pedal. Practicesmoothing out that initial touch, and then squeez-ing the pedal from there. This is identical to theway you should apply power on the race track.Abrupt inputs can induce understeer, as weight istransferred faster then the tire and suspension

can handle.Left-foot braking: Justcan’t get the “feel” ofleft-foot braking? Ifyou’re trying to addthis advanced pedaltechnique to yourrepertoire, start bypracticing in a car withan automatic tranny.Your left foot is accus-tomed to mashing inthe clutch and letting itout somewhat quickly.

Because of this your muscles need to be re-trained, and working with a clutchless pedal boxwill speed up the learning process. Again, Keepthat heel on the floor.
