At the April 20th Session of County Council, Tour-ism Week in Northumberland was proclaimed. The Northumberland Tourism Industry kick-off was held at the Cobourg Community Center on Monday, May 9th, 2011. As well as many sa-voury treats from across the County such as spe-cialty items from Empire Cheese, there was infor-mation about the Lilac Festival taking place later in May at Warkworth; the 100 years of Parks Canada and the Trent-Severn Waterway celebra-tions; spa services; fishing adventures. Northum-berland Tourism is promoting many reasons for residents to take a “Staycation” this year. A new Web link highlighting Rice Lake was also launched at the Cobourg Community Centre. The new portal, www.ExploreRiceLake.ca is part of a strategy to highlight outdoor events, shopping, dining and tours that can be enjoyed during visits to the internationally and locally well-known fish-ing area. The Saturday Cobourg Farmer's Market was one of the exhibitors at the event who are hoping to expand onto Second Street this season from its location behind Victoria Hall. Tourism and agri-culture are two of the main industries in the County which focused on locally-produced and locally-consumed foods which tourists can enjoy while in the County, and to take home for their enjoyment. The exhibits focused on reasons to visit North-umberland and some of the these included:- LetsFish Guiding events hosted by John

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP TRAIN DERAILMENT REPORT At the May 18th, County Council Session, a Report from Ken Stubbings, the County Emergency Planning & Health and Safety Coordinator, was presented.

On March 27 2011, 1244 hours a westbound Canadian National (CN) train derailed approximately 1.5km east of Port Hope. The train consisted of 116 cars. CN defines derailment as when any of the car wheels are not in contact with the track. Twenty three cars derailed. Seven cars of major concern had all wheels not in contact with the track. Two tankers contained jet fuel; two were empty liquid petroleum gas tankers; two contained sulfuric acid; and one

contains an unknown residual. A natural gas line was also ruptured. A grass fire and minor tanker fire resulted. All rail traffic, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and Via Rail was stopped. A 1.6km radius evacuation zone was established. There were no injuries during the derailment. Mr. Stubbings’ report included a number of positive actions that took place during the train derailment as well as some options for improvement. Clean up at the accident site is expected to be ongoing for a number of weeks. Northumberland EMS maintained a presence at the site for the duration of the emergency in case of fire, accidents or any potential threat to the many emergency services personnel involved in the incident. During the emergency, the Red Cross provided excellent service to the evacuees and communication between the Hamilton Township EOC and Red Cross was effective with the use of the County CEMC as liaison. The Community Emergency Management Coordinators in Northumberland County will continue to promote 72 hour preparedness.

Durham Northumberland Regional Innovation Center

At the April 20th Session of County Council, Mr. Daniel Ross, from the Northumberland Manufacturers’ Association, made a presentation on the new Regional Innovation Centre (RIC) being brought to Northumberland called Innovation Durham Northumberland (IDN). IDN will be part of a province-wide network that will provide commercialization support for entrepreneurs and business. The IDN will also provide access to a province wide network of experts, academics, companies, investors, government

agencies and others who can help continue to grow ideas and businesses. The NMA in partnership with the Durham Strategic Energy Alliance helped make the IDN possible. The IDN will house offices at UOIT in Oshawa, Durham College in Whitby and at the Northumberland Manufacturing Association offices in Cobourg.

2011 Litter Clean Up Appreciation BBQ/MRF Open House

Coming to a street near you! The Get Caught Recycling Clean Team will hit the streets again this May through to November on area collection days to check out your recycling. The house who has their recycling set out in accordance to the Recycle Clean program will win a prize! For more information about our Recycle Clean program, visit the Recycling page. During the month of May, the Get Caught Recycling Team will be targeting the Municipality of Alnwick/Haldimand with Tuesday collection days. You just never know what day we might show up on your street, so make sure your recycling is picture perfect every collection day!

County staff reported that this year’s event was an overwhelming success – it’s estimated that over 700 people attended the event. This was the 3rd annual event – the last 2 events have been held at the MRF. There was a BBQ, popcorn and other refreshments, an information table, composter give away, face painting, Mighty Machines, guided MRF tours, games and prizes (t-shirts, travel mugs and reusable lunch bags)

This event is a great venue for educating the public about recycling and the importance of sorting their recyclables properly.
