4-H Public Speaking Workshop – We had a great turn out for the 4-H Public Speaking Workshop on February 11th. Participants from both Caroline and Dorchester County learned about why public speaking and communication are important, how to be comfortable with public speaking, how to dress to impress, and what the public speaking contest is all about, and engaged in fun hands-on activities to practice public speaking. Thanks to the following youth for participating: Skylar Blunt, Macie Brown, Tessa Diefenderfer, Abby, Jorja & Natalee Emerson, Claire, Mark & Molly Heinsohn, Emma Lehmann, Lily Linkins, Trice Lofland, Ayden Phillips, Kimore & Ryshayla Stanley, Macrina & Nathaniel Zdobysz.

County 4-H Public Speaking Contest – The county 4-H Public Speaking Contest was held on February 22nd. We are super proud of the brave youth who participated. Public speaking can be scary, especially for youth and these youth did a fantastic job with their speeches and demonstrations. Congratulations to the following: Cloverbud – Claire Heinsohn, participation – reciting the Pledge of Allegiance; Mark Heinsohn, participation – show and tell about cactus collection

Junior - Molly Heinsohn, 1st and Champion, Prepared; Lily Linkins, participation – Demonstration; Trice Lofland, 1st and Champion – Demonstration; Paige Taylor, 3rd place – Demonstration; Macrina Zdobysz, 2nd and Reserve Champion – Demonstration; Nathaniel Zdobysz, participation – Demonstration

Special thanks to judges Chad Dean and Missy Tucker.

Kudos to Molly Heinsohn who competed at the Regional 4-H Public Speaking Contest on March 29th at Easton High School. Molly received a participation ribbon for her Junior Prepared Speech, “Dinosaurs.” Molly will be representing Caroline County at the State 4-H Public Speaking Contest on April 27th in College Park. Good luck Molly!

Fair Board Spring Bingo – The Fair Board wishes to thank everyone who helped at and supported their annual spring bingo and beef dinner fundraiser on March 10th. It takes a village to pull off this event and they are very appreciative of the support from 4-H families. Many of you helped with set-up, serving the beef dinner, worked in the kitchen, played bingo, provided donations, and much more. A big thanks to the chairperson extraordinaire, Joanne Wooters, for leading yet another fantastic spring bingo fundraiser.

4-H Achievement Banquet – Over 175 of you joined us at our annual 4-H Achievement Banquet on March 15th. It was a great evening filled with recognition, great food and fellowship, a lively auction, and celebration. Thank you to everyone who attended and made the night special. Special thank you to the clubs and individuals who donated items to or purchased items at the auction portion of the evening, and all of our wonderful banquet sponsors who made the awards possible. Those who donated auction items: Sharon Pahlman, Jack Kelley, Claire Fisher, Choptank River 4- H Club, Pure Country 4-H Club, Pure Country Clovers 4 –H Club, Saathoff Family, Hetrick Farms, and Cathy Hansen. Here are some highlights of the event:

4-H Yard & Craft Sale – We held another successful and sold out 4-H Yard & Craft Sale fundraiser on March 23rd. The Tail Waggers 4-H Club participated with sale table to support their club. Thank you to the Reinhold family (Dale, Vinny, and Dominic), Karen Callahan, and Dorsey Wooters for running the kitchen and doing all the clean-up and putting tables/chairs away. A big thanks to the event coordinator, Joanne Wooters, who works tirelessly to support 4-H. The proceeds from this event benefit 4-H programs and the Joanne Wooters Fair Scholarship fund. Our next 4-H Yard Sale will be held this fall on October 26th.

Last call for Member & Volunteer Re-enrollment

This is your last chance to re-enroll in Caroline County 4-H for 2019! The deadline was extended to May 1st because of the transition to using 4HOnline. If you don’t re-enroll by May 1st, you will be listed as inactive, removed from the email and mailing lists, won’t be eligible to participate in 4-H events including the county and state fair, and this will be your last newsletter. A separate letter is being sent to anyone this applies to. It is re-enrollment time! All 4-H members and UME certified 4-H volunteers must re-enroll in 4-H for 2019. Please take note of the new re-enrollment process below: Caroline County 4-H has fully transitioned to a web-based database management system called 4-H Online. This means that starting in 2019 we will no longer use or accept paper enrollments and/or re-enrollments. Instead, 4-H families will create an account and enroll themselves in 4-H (if they are new to 4-H). Current 4-H families will log-in and re-enroll all 4-H members and UME trained volunteers in their respective family. Instructions on how to re-enroll and use the 4-H Online system, including how to pay the $10 state enrollment fee were included in the last newsletter, sent in the mail, and have been emailed a few times. If you need another copy, please let Wendi know at [email protected]. If you have any questions, or need assistance please let us know. We have a computer that is available for use Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. All re-enrollments must be completed by May 1st.

Volunteer Vittles

Why Become a Volunteer?

As a program, 4-H has enjoyed over 100 years of progress in positive youth development. But did you know volunteers benefit from the program as well?

1. You can help shape the next generation of leaders!

2. Research has shown that 4-H volunteers develop new knowledge and skills while involved with 4-H.

3. Volunteers can use 4-H leadership skills to help in other areas of their lives (work, home, school, etc.)

4. Being a UME certified 4-H volunteer can be listed on a resume!

If you have not thought about becoming a volunteer… now is the time! We are in the expansion phase in Caroline County and we are looking for caring adults who can help us grow. Everyone has a gift. The question is, are you willing to share yours with a caring youth? If you or someone you know wants to give back to the community, call the office to request a Volunteer Application today!

WHY GOLF AND

STEM?

• There are physics

principles in golf!

• The goal of the Expo is to

encourage youth to think

like engineers and problem

solvers as they learn how

to play the game.

• Youth learn to manage their

emotions as they

experience the highs and

the lows of the game.

collaboration to accomplish, may take a year or longer to plan and complete. The Diamond Clover

Project should make a difference in your community. This requires the 4-Her to complete a project

that benefits their community. The 4-Her will submit a detailed plan that includes: description of the

project, justification for the project, who will be recruited to help, a budget that states how funds will be

obtained, projected timeline and any necessary approval letters from landowners, 4-H County/City,

government, etc. The Diamond Clover Committee should consist of, but is not limited to at least three

members including: 4-H Club Leaders, UME Volunteers, previous Diamond Clover winners, 4-H All

The Diamond Clover Project:

This is not a community service project, it’s a service-learning project. (ex: collecting food for a

soup kitchen vs. starting a community soup kitchen)

Should make a difference in your community or fulfill a need in the community

Be a challenge that allows you to develop life skills (planning, organizing, follow through)

Should involve others in the community and develop community partnerships

Plan should include how to maintain the project to have lasting impact beyond just one day or one

event

Should take time to develop a detailed plan, organize, implement, conduct, promote, evaluate and

provide follow-up information of the success of the program

Should take at least an estimated 100 hours to implement and complete

The sky is your limit…use your creativity and imagination

The Diamond Clover Project is your project (4-Hers) not your 4-H Educator, club leader, parents,

committee or friends!!!

Diamond Clover Samples:

Develop a Recycling Program at the County Fair or an area of need and plan for its sustainability

Initiate a River or Beach Cleanup and plan for its sustainability

Repair a local troubled youth facility, inside and out, including woodwork, painting and carpeting
