Lake Orion Thespian Troupe: Spring Play

This month the Lake Orion Thespian Troupe will be performing Disney's The Little Mermaid. Join us as we take you to a world of magic, excitement, and talking fish! Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney's The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World."

Between the cast, crew, and pit, nearly 100 students have been involved in this production. Come out and support the arts in Lake Orion.

Show dates are April 19, 20, 21 at 7pm and 22 at 2pm. Tickets are available for purchase at http://www.lakeorion.k12.mi.us/lohs/home. Get them fast, before they sell out!

Lake Orion Choirs thrive at Choral Festival!

The LO Choirs had a fantastic day at MSVMA Choral Festival! All three curricular choirs (9-12) and our extra-curricular choir (Una) received Division 1 ratings and were invited to sing at State Festival! Each of the choirs received extremely high scores ( formerly called a “Superior” rating) and very high praise from the judges. “Your group is the kind of group that judges love and hate to clinic.

We love listening to you so much but have nothing to fix.” The LO Choirs are known for their unique sound and musicality and each group built on this reputation with lovely musical moments and beautiful tone! Una and Chamber choirs were the only tow ensembles in the entire 4 day festival to even attempt sight reading at the advanced level and received high marks while doing so. If you would like to see the LOHS Choirs competition videos, search YouTube under LOHS choirs.

March 3, 2018 - LOHS FIRST Robotics Team 302, Miami Valley Regional Winner

This past weekend, the Lake Orion High School FIRST Robotics Team 302 traveled to Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio for their initial competition in this season’s POWER UP game. The team’s hard work during the past six weeks to design, build and test their creation paid off as they went undefeated in the qualification matches. There were some tense moments during the second quarterfinals match as one of their partner’s robots broke down and Team 302 chose to take on their opposing alliance partners in a 2 vs. 3 robot duel. The move paid off with a win for the excited crowd. With their partner’s robot fixed, The Dragons alliance completed their remaining matches and finished the day as event winners, only losing one match during the entire competition. As a result of the win, this group of talented students, have qualified to compete at the inaugural FIRST World Championship in Detroit to be held at Cobo Center and Ford Field on April 25-28. The team was also proud to receive the “Gracious Professionalism Award” for assisting multiple teams who encountered technical issues with their robots at the competition. This award reflects one of the basic principles of FIRST, that teams learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect.

LOHS National Scholastic Art Award Winners

This year all the high school Art teachers have students that are receiving national Scholastic awards. Six students from LOHS are receiving these awards. They will be honored through an awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall. The Empire State building will be lit in gold in their honor that evening. Gold key recipients are invited to the ceremony. I am really proud of our students and our department. This is an enormous amount of time and work each year. I am truly blessed to work with an amazing staff at Lake Orion. Our students make Art, but they write a lot, it requires a lot of Math, and a lot of their Social Studies and Science is expressed through their creative expression. Some of you do a lot of counseling with the art kids and you help them learn how to deal with extremely tough issues. Our administration works so hard to make sure the kids can express themselves and do everything they can to keep everything running. I know our class sizes are to big, they are at all schools, and there is not enough prep time ever, but working at Lake Orion is great because you make it great. You all make a difference in these kids lives. So check out some of their work. I have attached the national winners. You can even bid on some of their work in the art auction at 5. Congrats to Matia Rourke Gold key, Madie Graham Silver Key Portfolio, Lorin Guisgand Silver Key, Josie Graham Silver Key, Logan Ballagh Silver key, and Rachel Falkowski Silver Key.

HIGH SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS

LOHS Band, Winter Guard & Winter Percussion Honors

This past few weeks have brought some high honors for the ensembles and individual members of the LOHS Bands. Three of our students were selected to be part of the highly prestigious Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF) Honors Band or Orchestra. Justin Gembarski (tuba) was selected to be a member of the MYAF Honors Orchestra, while both Jeremy Mervak (percussion) and Jaclyn Holmes (clarinet) were selected to be in the MYAF Honors Band. They were selected based on their very high ratings at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival. They were chosen for the high honor because of their very high score received on their proficiency solo on Saturday.

Also, a percussion quintet, including Jeremy Mervak, Charliee Mervak, Jerry Hoskins, Gavin Vanderkerkhove, and Austin Allaire were nominated by their judge as an outstanding ensemble for the MYAF, putting them in a very small group of ensembles nominated to perform at the Youth Arts Festival in May. Their judge shared with me that this was “possibly the best ensemble” that he has every heard, at any level.”

All four of our concert bands at LOHS earned top ratings at Band Festival. Campus Band earned a Second Division (second highest possible) rating, while the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble all earned Straight-I’s, which is the highest possible rating.

It has been a very success month for the Winter Guard and our Winter Percussion groups. Varsity Guard won the Flint WGI Regional two weeks ago. Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Guard took first place in their competitions in Jenison as well. Winter Percussion took first place in their competition at Lakeland High School two weeks ago.

This past weekend at Troy Athens, the Winter Percussion group finished in 4th place, due to a penalty cause by electrical issue, their score with out penalty would have easily given them first place. The Varsity and Junior Varsity Winter Guard both place 6th place in very competitive divisions. The Varsity Color Guard once again finished easily in 1st place in their division with an absolutely stunning performance. State finals for these groups will be held the week-end of April 7-8 at Saginaw Valley State University.

Parchment The Easy Way to Order Transcripts for College Applications!

When applying for colleges, remember that we have joined forces with parchment to help send your transcripts electronically. Go to www.parchment.com and complete the registration information. You’ll need an email address so we can contact you. Select the colleges you’re applying to (we've got the addresses). DO NOT request transcripts if you are planning on onsite interview. This should be a FREE service for in state colleges and some out of state colleges. If the colleges you select are not on the free list, then come into your counseling office, and we’ll send them for you. If there is a counseling page, you must bring it into the office.

FAFSA - Financial Aid for Seniors

We recommend that all up coming seniors complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This is the first step for all students to receive grants, subsidized and unsubsidized loans, and other money for college. The quickest way to apply is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The Michigan deadline for filing the FAFSA is October 1, 2018.
