April-June 2018 Programs at Crowder County Park Let’s Talk Turtles Sunday, April 15 2–3 p.m. Crowder is home to many different types of turtles. Discover the turtles that live here and examine the special adaptations they have in order to survive. Walk down to the pond to play turtle bingo and then meet some of our fascinating tur- tle residents up close. Meet at the Upper Pavilion. Animal Senses Sunday, May 20 2–3 p.m. See the world through bugs’ eyes and listen with deer’s ears. Learn how animals use their senses to get around. Play some games to discover your senses and make a smelly craft. Meet at the Upper Pavilion. Beautiful Butterflies Sunday, June 10 2–3 p.m. Explore the types of butterflies that call the park home and the different stages of their life cycle. Identify the special ad- aptations that butterflies have and go on a nature hunt to search for the perfect butterfly habitat! Meet at the Upper Pavilion. 19th Annual Frog Fest Saturday, April 7; 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Participate in some froggy family fun at this year’s Frog Fest event! Learn about frogs and the clean water we all need. Enjoy crafts, games, live music, and tasty food from local food trucks. Meet and greet with live frogs and rep- tiles. For all ages: fee: FREE! Registration is not required. Note that off-site parking at Middle Creek High School will be required during the event - a free shuttle will be provided to and from the park. Let’s Talk Turtles Sunday, April 15

2–3 p.m.

Crowder is home to many different

To Be a Tree

Wednesday, April 11; 11:00 a.m.–Noon

Even the mightiest of oaks start out as young

seedlings! Explore seeds, cones, leaves,

and trees through hand lenses and

observation. Read a fun story and make a

tree costume to learn the parts of a tree.

Planting a Rainbow

Wednesday, May 9; 11:00 a.m.–Noon

Flowers are in full bloom at the park! Read

"Planting a Rainbow" by Lois Ehlert and

learn what flowers need to grow. Then

search for colorful flowers in the park and

make a fun craft to take home.

Hide and Snake

Wednesday, June 6; 11:00 a.m.–Noon

Look closely and discover how animals play hide and

seek. Play games, read a story, and make a camo craft

to learn about how and why animals blend in with their

surroundings in nature. Go on a nature hike and find

out how many hidden creatures we can see!

Nature Watchers

Preschool children with accompanying adult(s)

discover the natural world through stories, hands-on

nature activities, games, crafts and outdoor exploration.

For ages 3-5. Fee: $4/Child. Registration is required.

Nature Families

Great for families with children of different ages.

For all ages; fee: $1/Person. Registration is required

for all family members and children must have

adult accompaniment. Meet at the Upper Pavilion.

Three Cheers for Trees

Tuesday, April 10; 11:00 a.m.–Noon

Trees are important in our daily lives. They not only

beautify our environment but also, provide homes and

food for wildlife. Learn the important role trees play

in our communities through games and hands-on

activities. Make paper and then discover the goods

we get from our woods!

Flower Fun

Tuesday, May 8; 11:00 a.m.–Noon

Flowers are very important to the animals in the

park. Learn the life cycle of a plant and which

animals depend on flowers. Discover how flowers

drink water in a fun science

experiment and then paint a

flower pot to take home.

Sneaky Snakes

Tuesday, June 5; 11:00 a.m.–Noon

Did you know there are over 3,000 species of snakes?

Sort through facts about these

reptiles in a fun trivia game. Learn

about their neat adaptations and

observe scales and snake skins

using hand lenses. Then meet "Popcorn,” our park's

corn snake!

Check Out A Discovery Box!

Want to explore the park with the knowledge of a

naturalist? Check out a discovery box from the park!

Discovery boxes are self-guided lesson plans,

intended for use by teachers of small classes or

parents who wish to educate children without

requesting a formal program through the office.

All boxes come complete with hands-on lesson

plans, equipment, story books, guides and

take-home activities!

Crowder By Night

Family programs that explore the park at night. For all ages

(adult accompaniment is required for all children); fee:

$1/Person. Registration required. Meet at Heron Shelter.

Night Time Explorers

Friday, April 27, 7:30–8:30 p.m. The park comes alive after dark! Let the moon guide your

way as we stroll around the pond in search of these

nighttime critters. Play fun games and try to

catch some nocturnal bugs! Don't forget a

flashlight to spot the spiders.

Fantastic Frogs

Friday, May 25, 7:30–8:30 p.m. Rribbit! Listen to the chorus of frogs and toads as the sun

sets at Crowder Park. Sort through facts about toads and

frogs, play froggy bingo, and make a herp hotel! Then walk

down to the pond and hear our amphibian friends in action!

Firefly Frenzy

Friday, June 22, 7:30–8:30 p.m. How many fireflies can you catch? Sign up for an evening

of summer fun as we catch and release lightning bugs.

Explore what gives them a special glow through hands-on

discovery, games, and more!

Eco-Crafts Monday, April 23

11:00 a.m.–Noon

Help us celebrate Earth Day by

creating fun craft projects from

everyday objects! We will bring

the materials if you bring the

imagination. For all ages (adult

accompaniment required

for all children); fee:

FREE. Registration is

Spring Flowers Monday, May 28

11:00 a.m.–Noon

The flowers are in full bloom at the

Colors in Nature Monday, April 9; 10:30 a.m.– 11:00 a.m.

Practice your colors by sorting natural objects found in

the park! Then go on a nature hunt to find plants and

animals of different colors! For ages 18 months - 3 years

Movement in Nature

Monday, May 7; 10:30 a.m.– 11:00 a.m. Work on your motor skills through center-based activities.

Practice threading, sorting, jumping, and catching. Then

play with musical instruments. For ages 18 months - 3

years (with an accompanying adult); fee: $2/child.

Registration is required. Meet at the Upper Pavilion.

Animals in Nature

Monday, June 4; 10:30 a.m.– 11:00 a.m. Practice your recognition skills through sorting, matching,

and more! Move like animals in nature and find park

critters in a fun scavenger hunt. For

Walk in the Woods Saturdays, April 14, May 19, and June 9

10:00—11:00 a.m.

Take a walk in the woods and discover the animals

and plants that call our park home. Help collect data

for our Natural Resource Inventory Database and

other citizen science projects.

All experience levels are welcome.

Let's learn together! For ages 14 & up;

Fee: FREE. Preregistration required.

Polliwogs Summer Camp

This summer, Crowder County Park is offering three

drop-off mini camps for preschoolers ages 4-5.

Camps offer your preschooler hands-on nature activities

including visits with live animals, hikes, crafts, games,

and more. Each camp offers a different theme. There will

be two adult staff with the kids at all times. Kids bring

their own snacks. Preregistration is required. Camp size

is capped at 16, so sign up early! Fee: $36/child.

TREES

Tuesday–Thursday, June 12-14; 9:00 a.m.–Noon

Big and tall, short and small, trees come in all

shapes and sizes. You will be so amazed at

what trees do for our Earth! Discover the parts of

the tree and go on a scavenger hunt.

Then help us plant a flower to help feed the

butterflies and bees of the park.

WATER

Tuesday–Thursday, July 10–12; 9:00 a.m.–Noon

Where does our water come from and why is it

important? Learn about the water cycle, and explore

the critters that live in and around the pond. Prepare

to get wet as we splash around and learn about this

important resource!

ANIMALS

Tuesday–Thursday, August 7-9; 9:00 a.m.–Noon

Join us this week as we explore the animals that live

in the park. Collect bugs, slugs, and other slimy crit-

ters and learn about their habitat. Then meet

“Popcorn,” our corn snake, and other reptiles.
