The Columbus Big Give had another successful year! The Big Give serves as a 24-hour giving period for individuals to donate to local non-profits of their choice. This year, we were excited to partner with Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation to host a giving station at Glur Park. We want to thank everyone who was able to come out and support our local non-profits. The funds raised for area non-profits in 2016 were over $85,500 with the Center for Survivors Endowment Board receiving over $5,000.
National Police Week was held from May 15th-21st.
Our law enforcements officers are often the first responders to incidents of violence in our communities. We had a great group of volunteers from Lakeview High School paint the windows to show our appreciation. We would like to thank our local law enforcement agencies for their dedication and sacrifice in keeping our communities safe. #WeSeeYou

Please help us welcome all of our new Revolution Members! On June 1st & 2nd, the Center for Survivors Program Manager, Abbie Tessendorf, along with other Center staff trained 44 members of Revolution on dating violence, sexual assault, media/technology safety, and healthy relationships. These teens are dedicated to making a difference in our communities and are striving for a world free of violence. We are so excited to see their work in the upcoming years.

Our Annual Summer Sizzle fundraiser was another HUGE success! This year’s event took place at Ramada Inn on Friday, June 10th. The theme this year was “Old Hollywood.” We had over 150 auction items including a Husker football tailgate space, autographed jerseys (Tommy Armstrong of Nebraska and Eric Berry of the Kansas City Chiefs), and Kansas City Royals tickets. We would like to thank all of our donors, businesses and individuals for your contributions! We would also like to thank our board members, volunteers, and Revolution members for donating their time to make sure that we had another successful event.
It is hard to believe that 2016 is half over. The old saying, “time flies when you’re having fun”, truly describes that our volunteers have been having fun with all of the opportunities available to them. April was National Volunteer Month and it was our pleasure to recognize our wonderful volunteers who are so dedicated and willing to give so much of themselves. We had a volunteer training evening and we are happy to report that we had a fantastic turnout. It was great getting to know our new volunteers, as well as those that have been volunteering with the Center for years. We have kept busy with outreach at local health fairs, the No More 5K Color Run, finishing up with the painting around the office, adult support group, children’s group, all of the day-to-day office jobs, board and committee meetings, making and donating goodies to Revolution training, and our big project—our Summer Sizzle fundraiser. We had so many fabulous volunteers this year helping with every aspect of the Sizzle. We are so grateful for all of your help, as the Sizzle is an important fundraiser for the Center. The Center would not be what it is without our volunteers. Thank you again! We do have many great opportunities coming up. If you would like to volunteer please contact our volunteer coordinator, Traci Pilar. We are so thankful for our supportive community of volunteers and for your commitment to our mission of non-violence.

No More 5K Run
On April 24th, Central Community College’s National Society on Leadership and Success held their 2nd No More 5k in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The monies raised directly benefitted victims of violence in our six county service area. Thank you to all of the students, staff, and attendees for raising awareness on this prominent issue!
As a non-profit we do not have the
funding available to pay for all the
needed services we provide for our
clients, such as transportation, so
volunteers are very much needed to
help out.
Last year over 4,154 hours of service
were provided by volunteers. You can
make the difference in others lives.

As usual, we are overwhelmed with gratitude! First we want to thank these amazing volunteers for all of their help on our Summer Sizzle Event: Casey Bailey, Marilyn Carleo, Nikki Cimpl, Dr. Rick Cimpl, Shanda Erb, Alyssa Hogeland, Denise Kollath, Michelle McMillan, & Jane Schneider. These awesome volunteers, along with our board members, spent months planning for the event including setting up decorations, clean-up after the event and soliciting area businesses. We would al-so like to thank the Cornhusker Power Goodwill Fund and the ADM Cares Council for their extremely generous donations! We would not be able to continue to offer many of our services if it were not for these great donations! Our last thank you goes out to Mike Kaczor of the Fence Shop. Mike has kindly donated his services to ensure that our landscaping and yard areas are well maintained. Again, we are humbled by our supportive community. The Center is so appreciative of all of you!
Upcoming Events
We are excited for the area county fairs including
Boone (July 9-13), Butler (July 19-24), Colfax (July

Platte (July 6-10). Stop by and see us at our area
booths! We are also looking forward to participating
in the Columbus Days Parade on August 21st!
Recently, the Center has been asked to do a few presentations on the use of technology in cases of stalking and abuse. 76% of female homicide victims have been stalked by their intimate partner, and it is reported some form of technology was used in one in four of those homicides. Technology abuse may include but is not limited to: checking phone logs, emails, and odometers, monitoring computer usage, sending unwanted calls, texts, and emails, leaving gifts, creating fake social media accounts to make contact with the victim, and installing GPS/tracking devices on phones and vehicles. Due to expansions in the “technology world”, social media and phone apps have made stalking easier and more accessible. Apps advertised for a parent to monitor a child’s computer usage are being utilized by abusers to track every link and keystroke the victim initiates. GPS tracking allows an abuser to set digital barriers and receive notifications if their victim steps outside that barrier. Some apps even track each location the victim visits and each step they take. A victim may not know that a GPS tracker has been installed on his/her phone because the app runs in the background of the phone and does not display an icon on the screen. Even with social media, we need to periodically monitor our privacy settings and be cautious about what we post. The internet and modern technology make it impossible to be inconspicuous. The more information we display on our social media accounts, the easier it is for others to locate us. We advise parents to be aware of what may be on your child’s phone/tablet by monitoring what apps are on their devices. Even children can become victims of internet harassment through chat rooms on apps, tablet games, or video games. If you have questions or need more information on stalking and tech abuse, please contact Megan Cimpl or Taylor Baumgart at the Center for Survivors at (402) 564-2155.
