EXALTED RULEREXALTED RULEREXALTED RULEREXALTED RULER A Message A Message A Message A Message from thefrom thefrom thefrom the

As we begin the 2017-2018 lodge year, I would be remised to not recall the past year and all of the great deeds and promising virtues which took place that we have accomplished throughout our community. I would like to start off my year as Exalted Ruler by giving a great and heartfelt applause to our newest Past Exalted Ruler, Mr. Scott Waldhart. Scott has given credit where credit was due, and when things needed to get done he not only took the elk by the horns, but led his officers in a great and noble direction. Thank you, Scott.

I would like to say first of all that I am very proud to be seated here as your Exalted Ruler. Over the past three years of serving as an officer for the Elks, I have come to feel a passion within me that burns stronger year after year. Along with that very passion brings new founded responsibilities to the Lodge, and to you, the members of #248. My friends, I love this place and everything that the Wausau Elks stand for. This passion, along with help from you, our members, can lead us to accomplish anything. I am beginning this year with the motto, “Share Your Pride.” This message will be our focus starting now and through the duration of the coming year. Now, here is the catch. This isn’t just about my pride, this is about you and your pride of being an Elk. I want to hear from you. There’s passion in each and every one of us and if you’re smiling right now while reading this, then you know exactly what I am talking about, and that is the burning ember that I am looking for. It makes you feel wonderful, doesn’t it? That’s the message I would like for you to share with every-one. What I have found is that pride in Elkdom doesn’t come from outside influences, the outside influ-ences are what we create with everyone in our community, by giving back to those in need. That’s who we are and this will be our message moving forward. Please, share that pride with everyone and let people know who we are. This year will be our year to let the message of #248 ring true to those around our community by supporting those in need, our contributions toward our great scholarships, our grants toward great programs such as The Community Warming House, Never Forgotten Honor Flight and others such as The Women’s Commu-nity and the Neighbor’s Place. Also, let us not forget about camp Wawbeek with its camping program for severely disabled children. Let’s get this message out to people in our community about who we are and what we do through the Elks. Spread the word about Elkdom and watch what it does to those around you. I will be looking forward to meeting and talking with each and every one of you this year so please stop in at the Lodge and say hello.

Well, that was the year that was, and what a year. As of this writing, our

membership stands at 677, having started the year at 667. However, we have 12

delinquents that we must remove from our roster before March 31, meaning we will

end the year at 665. All in all, not bad. We have received some thoughtful advice

that perhaps dropping our dues would increase membership, but that is something

for the Board of Governors, and it would also mean a change in our by-laws. Scott

Waldhart deserves a lot of thanks for working extremely hard this past year to keep

our Lodge one of the most active in the state. He has been a joy to work with. But

enough of the old year. We start the new year as John Mijal takes over as Exalted

Ruler. John’s officer corps is in place, and I will continue as Secretary, with the

continued support of Chuck Berens. I can hear the groaning from here, but hey,

someone has to do it. It appears we can start the year off right as we have seven

candidates in line for initiation, as well as a transfer into our Lodge. Keep those

cards and letters coming, especially if they contain your dues payments.

RidgeRidgeRidgeRidge

PLEASE Carry and use your door card. We are a private club so our building is

available only to our members. New members receive one key card when they pay their

initial dues and you can buy additional cards for only $6.00.

Please carry and use your cards. Please carry and use your cards. Please carry and use your cards. Please carry and use your cards. Yes, you can push the button on the call box and someone on the staff can open the door for you, but on many nights and Fridays so many members buzz the door that the staff

cannot do what they are really here for. If you have lost your card or it no longer works,

please contact the Secretary.

Parking Reminder Please remember that we need to respect our downtown neighbors. DO NOT PARK in the

Associated Bank & Marathon Savings Bank lots until after business hours, 6 PM on weekdays and Fridays. After 5758 hours they allow us the use of their lots but they need their spaces for their staff and their customers while they are open.

April is that time of year when Uncle Sam kindly reminds us of the importance of financial planning and obligations. As you review your planning, especially regarding your estate plans, keep the Wausau Elks in mind. A bequest to the Lodge is a lasting way of supporting your belief in the good things we Elks do for those around us. Call the lodge office for more information if

you think this may fit your plans.

Membership cards for this Lodge year are being processed as rapidly as possible. Many are in the Box in the Lobby ready to be picked up, check the next time you stop in.

It’s Still Hoop Shoot time in Wausau. Saturday March 18, our Lodge had a competitor in the Girls 12/13 age group at the Regional competition in Iowa. Katie Meyer from Trinity School represented Wausau 248 and the Wisconsin Elks Association in that event and finished Third in her age group. Thank you to Katie

and her family for representing our Lodge and being part of this program. Congratulations Katie for advancing to the Regional Level!

LODGE LORE Did you know that there was once an Elks Lodge in Merrill, Wisconsin? Merrill Lodge #696 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was founded on Tuesday afternoon, May, 7, 1901 with Thomas B. Mills, the District Deputy Grand Exalted ruler for Wisconsin presiding. The new Lodge was sponsored by Wausau Lodge #248. Elks from Wisconsin Lodges in Wausau, Marshfield, and Milwaukee, as well as from Minneapolis & St. Paul, Minnesota, and Grand Rapids, Michigan; served as Grand Lodge Officers for the institution of the Lodge. Wausau Lodge Officers took charge of performing the 5351 initiation ceremony for the 36 Charter Members. Considering that this was well before the widespread use of the automobile and our road system, we can only assume that these individuals must have traveled by rail. Consider the commitment of time, effort, and money that this entailed for these mem-bers. Not to mention the loss of work hours as well. The first Exalted Ruler of the Merrill Lodge was Alfred H. Wright, Leading Knight was George M. Anson, Loyal Knight was James J. Kiely, and Lecturing Knight Edward M. Smart. Unfortunately the building where the Merrill Lodge met no longer exists. They met at the First Presbyterian Church at 1117 East Third Street in Merrill see photo. Today the closest house is at 1109. Suffice it to say that it was located close to where “Chips” is today. Merrill Elks Lodge #696 lost its Charter in 1945, one year before the same happened to Rhinelander Lodge #598, which had also been sponsored by the Wausau Lodge. No records regarding the reasons for these closings are available.
