DivineMercyDEVOTION OF

by: Mike Navarro

DIVINE MERCY BACKGROUND IN THE CHURCHTo open the millennium Pope John Paul II declared that the Second Sunday of Easter would become the Feast of Divine Mercy, and he exhorted the faithful to participate in the Divine Mercy Devotion. On the first Feast of Divine Mercy, celebrated on April 30, 2000, he canonized St. Faustina.St. Faustina, a Sister from Poland, lived from 1905-1938 (33 years old). She entered the Apostolic Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy at the age of 20. She mystically received over 17 extraordinary private revelations from Jesus, the Divine Mercy chaplet prayer, and the Divine Mercy Image.Since the year 2000, every pope (JPII, BXVI, and Francis) has celebrated the Vatican’s Divine Mercy Mass, and the Divine Mercy Service at 3:00 from the Chair of Peter. In so doing, our Holy Fathers have put their imprimatur on this powerful devotion.Another true sign was on April 2, 2005, after the Divine Mercy Vigil Mass celebrated in St. Peter’s Cathedral, JPII passed away. Pope John Paul II was canonized on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, 2014.Last year Pope Francis culminated the Year of Mercy when he celebrated the Vatican’s Divine Mercy Service. Divine Mercy Devotion (Pray the Chaplet, Participate in the Novena, and Attend Divine Mercy Celebration Service)Recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, a five minute prayer. The Divine Mercy Novena starts on Good Friday, March 30th and ends the following Saturday. Each day the chaplet is prayed for certain souls: • Day 1: All sinners• Day 2: Priest and Religious• Day 3: Devout and Faithful Souls• Day 4: Those Who Do Not Believe in God• Day 5: Those Who Have Separated Themselves from the Church• Day 6: Meek and Humble Souls and the Souls of Little Children• Day 7: Souls Who Venerate and Glorify My Mercy• Day 8: Those Detained in Purgatory• Day 9: Those Who Have Become Lukewarm in FaithJesus’ special promise to those who complete the Divine Mercy Novena, go to confession, and receive communion on Divine Mercy Sunday: “…shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day are open all the divine floodgates through which graces flow.” Attend the Divine Mercy Celebration Service. At the service the Image is Displayed, Blessed, and Venerated, and personal articles are also blessed. The image has the five wounds of Jesus. Emanating from the heart of Jesus is a pale ray and a red ray. The pale ray symbolizes the water which cleanses and purifies and the red ray represents the blood which gives new life to souls. Words inscribed on the image are “Jesus, I Trust in You.” Jesus’ Promises to People who recite and spread the Devotion of Divine Mercy:“Souls who spread the honor of my mercy I shield through their entire life and at the hour of death will receive great mercy.”When you pray the chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the Just Judge, but as the Merciful Savior.”CLOSINGOur Holy Fathers have told us that Divine Mercy is the greatest attribute of God, and it is especially needed in our modern, secular times. All are invited to attend our Divine Mercy Service to receive these powerful graces and blessings of Mercy.

JESUS I TRUST IN YOU

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury

Those who are new to our Parish this year, and those who’ve been coming for years without being registered, we need your help in staying organized and planning for our future needs. Having an accurate database of our parishioners will help us know where and how we need to grow. Thank you to everyone who registered with our Parish. If you have not received a welcome letter, please call the Parish Office to confirm your registration. All new parishioners, and those interested in registering in our Parish, are invited to attend The New Parishioner Orientation will take place on Sunday, May 20th, 2018 at 12:30pm.This is your opportunity to become informed and active members of the Parish and participate in our various ministries. Registering at St. John XXIII is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community. Please let the parish office know your email address OR you can even update it on the Parish Website! www.johnxxiii.net Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, Baptisms or serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism request a letter stating that they are parishioners. To receive such a letter, one must be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to stewardship of time, talent and treasure. One means of verifying participation is through the use of parish offertory envelopes. If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish or are unable to contribute at this time, please at least note your prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory basket.

Thinking about joining the Catholic Church, but feel a little lost? The RCIA inquiry stage is the starting place for adults who are thinking about entering the Catholic Church.“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10In the inquiry stage, you’re just finding out about Jesus, Christianity, and the Catholic Church. Talk to people, walk around in our shoes for a bit and get a feel for the place. As an inquirer, you’re not yet sure exactly what you think about the Catholic Church. Your main task here is to develop your faith a little bit, get to know Christ, prayer, the Catholic Church, and how Christians live. That’s the only way you can make an informed decision about entering the Catholic Church.

Have you received the Sacrament of Confirmation?Just as bodies and minds grow, Catholics believe that the soul also needs to grow in the life of grace. The Sacrament of Confirmation builds on the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Holy Communion, completing the process of initiation into the Catholic community.

Want to Hear More? Please call the parish office at (239) 561-2245 and make an appointment to meet with Father Bob.

We are thankful for this generous donation and we know the devotion to our Blessed Mother will invite peace, prayer and love as she leads us to her son Jesus. For more information on the design, artist and theme of the statue, please obtain a free tri-fold brochure located in the Narthex.

Divine MercySUNDAY APRIL 8, 2018 - 3PM-4PM

The Image of the Divine Mercy is to be ceremoniously blessed on this day. The Image is to be publicly venerated. The Image should be exposed to all taking part in the celebration…to touch and say “Jesus I Trust in You.” (I.341)

JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU

“For Jesus is our Hope: through His merciful heart

as through an open gate, we pass through to heaven.”

(Diary, 1570)

Jane Sweeney at (239) 560-6237

Jesus’ special promise to those who complete the Divine Mercy Novena, go to confession, and receive communion on Divine Mercy Sunday: “…shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day are open all the divine floodgates through which graces flow.”

Merciful Deed

Merciful Prayer

The Divine Mercy Message is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, Diary of Saint Faustina. That we contemplate, on this day, Divine Mercy Sunday, the Mystery of Redemption as the greatest revelation of Divine Mercy towards us. (I.130)

The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC:

A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world.

B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us.

C - Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive.

The message and devotional practices proposed in the Diary of Saint Faustina and set forth in publications of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception are completely in accordance with the teachings of Church and are firmly rooted in the Gospel message of our Merciful Savior. Properly understood and implemented, they will help us grow as genuine followers of Christ.

• Prayers for Mercy for the World

“God is so merciful toward us. We too should learn to

be merciful, especially with those who suffer.”

Pope Francis

Heart t o PrayPrayer is, as it were, being alone with God. A soul prays only when it is turned toward God, and for so long as it remains so. As soon as it turns away, it stops praying. The preparation for prayer is thus the movement of turning to God and away from all that is not God. That is why we are so right when we define prayer as this movement. Prayer is essentially a “raising up,” an elevation. We begin to pray when we detach ourselves from created objects and raise ourselves up to the Creator. Now, this detachment is born when we clearly realize our nothingness. That is the real meaning of our Lord’s words: “He that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” His whole life was a continual abasement, always more and more profound. St. Bernard does not hesitate to say that such an abasement brings us face-to-face with God. Hence the peace of souls that have fallen, when, raised up by God, they find themselves in His presence. And it is precisely in their abasement, once they have recognized and admitted it, that they find Him, because it is there that He reveals Himself. The only thing that prevents Him from doing so is our “self.” When we own to our nothingness, this “self” is broken down, and once that happens, the mirror is pure, and God can produce own image in the soul, which then faithfully reproduces His features that are revealed in all their harmony and perfect beauty. This is what our Lord meant in that vital passage in the Sermon on the Mount, and what all human considerations on prayer repeat endlessly but without arriving at its full splendor: “But thou, when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber and, having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret.” Enter this sacred chamber of your soul and there, having closed the door, speak to your Father, who sees you in these secret depths, and say toHim, “Our Father, who art in Heaven. . . ”This intimate presence; your faith inHim who is the secret depth of it andgives Himself there; the silencetoward all that is not God inorder to be all to Him.

STORAGE SPACE

The ability of our Social Justice Ministry to serve those in need is being severely impacted by a lack of storage space. SOLES FOR SOULS needs long-term Sneaker Storage space. That enables us to purchase sneakers on sale throughout the year, “stretching” our donated funds. A spare garage (or room) would suffice.THE HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE needs short-term storage space from mid October-November to store food items. A spare room would be ideal. If you reside within close proximity tothe Church, and can donate storagespace in your home for either of theabove, please contact the following: SNEAKER STORAGE: Stella McCaffrey (239) 303-1935email: [email protected] FOOD STORAGE: Sandy Szymanski (239) 689-3631 email: [email protected]

NEEDED

The Thrift Store needs able bodied individuals to cover a Monday PM shift, Thursday and Saturday AM and PM shifts. • The individual(s) will be receiving donations at

the dock and disbursing those donations to the various sorting areas.

• The ability to pick-up, carry and move 30 plus pounds, reach items on shelves, and bend are necessary for these tasks.

• If you have a desire to help families afford a Catholic education, this is the place for you.
