Dear Motor Medics,I’m thinking about purchasing a “green” vehicle, either a Hybridor totally electric design but I don’t know where to begin. I’ll beusing this as a second car but hope to use it as much as possibleand I will likely purchase one that is new or less than a year old.Can you help me understand some of the differences betweenthe two and give me ideas on what to consider?

Dear Gary,The first thing to consider when purchasing either one is how it will beused. As a second car, you have the luxury of using your other car forvery long trips. With the Hybrid, this is not a problem but with a fullyelectric car this would be a show stopper. Hybrid Vehicles all have aninternal combustion engine combined with an electric motor that sharethe load in part to save fuel while Electric Vehicles must be rechargedwhen exhausted. If the Hybrid runs low on electricity it can rely on theengine, which if low on fuel can easily be refilled at the gas station. Ifyou run out of juice on the Electric Vehicle, it means a tow. Before pur-chasing either model we suggest you spend considerable timeresearching both options. There are many people who swear by their“green” vehicles and would never go back to a conventional car, othersswear at them. Research is crucial.

Dear Motor Medics,My Dodge Caravan is five years old and I just don’t seem to beable to see the road like I used to. The lenses are still clear andI’ve had them adjusted but I don’t see well at all. We also have aCadillac that has those tiny round headlights and I can see greatwhile driving it. Is there anything I can do to my van to get thesame light out of it that the car has? I see cars with those reallybright lights that blind me when I drive. Can those be legal? Idon’t want to blind people I just want to see well.

Dear Glenna,There is a major difference in lighting systems between your two vehi-cles. The van uses headlight technology that has been used since theModel T era, it has been refined a bit with better reflectors and bulbsbut still has limits. The Cadillac uses H.I.D lamps. High intensity dis-charge comprised of special ballasts and bulbs, and a focusing projec-tor lens to send the high-power light to the road immediately in front ofyou and not into oncoming vehicles eyes. You can upgrade to a betterconventional bulb in the van but legally you can’t use H.I.D bulbs with-out the projector type lens because it wil l bl ind other dr ivers.Aftermarket projector lenses are available for some vehicles but notthe van as far as we know.


Dear Motor Medics,My car runs pretty good and I am not one to bring it in just tohave it checked over once in a while. I am more of the kind ofperson who visits the shop once the car has broken. After listen-

ing to your show I am thinking I may be able to save some moneyby doing some preventative maintenance instead of waiting forthe major breakdowns. Recently my brakes started making somenoise but they don’t do it every day. Dear Joanne,Routine maintenance will save you money on repairs. Regular inspec-tions should be performed on safety items at each oil change andaddressed as needed. These inspections are done for free at mostshops so check around if yours does not offer this service. Inspectbrakes annually and completely check them right away if there is achange in pedal travel or if noise is heard when applying them accom-panied by grinding. Damp mornings can cause rust on the braking sur-faces resulting in noise. This should go away after a couple of pedalapplications and should not be felt in the pedal.


Dear Motor Medics,I am a longtime fan of yours and you have saved me countlessdollars on repairs by teaching me how to do them myself, andwhen they are larger than I can handle you have taught me howto look for the best mechanic. I drive a 2001 Ford Explorer and Iam getting ready to pull a trailer with it. I have owned it for sever-al years and it has a hitch but no trailer light connector. This willbe my first time pulling a trailer with this vehicle. Can I just tapinto the tail lights to connect my trailer light connector or do Ineed something special? I don’t want to cause a problem with thevehicle. I have also serviced the transmission and rear end priorto towing as well.

Dear Darren,Great idea you had on the proactive transmission and rear differentialservice. Depending on the size of the trailer and load you may thinkabout a transmission cooler if the Explorer is not equipped with one.For the trailer wiring you need to make sure you do not overload theelectrical system. On this vehicle and many others a tow wiring kit isadvised. Available at most auto parts stores this kit takes its powerfrom the battery directly and uses relays activated by the vehicleslights to power the trailer lights preventing damage to the vehicles sys-tem.


Dear Motor Medics,I have a 1994 Stealth RT without the turbocharged engine. I havegone through 2 new batteries in a short period of time. Is it possi-ble that a failing alternator can ruin a battery? If so I would like toknow if there is a way to check if the alternator has actuallyfailed. Are there specific testing methods that can be used to nar-row the cause down? Dear Karen,A failing alternator can ruin a battery in a short period of time. If it’sovercharging or is draining current when off it will discharge the batteryafter it sits for extended periods. Even if it does not sit long enough torun completely down it can cause the battery to fail due to its heavydischarge/charge cycles.To check the alternator you need to have a charging system analysisdone with a charging system tester. This will show the internal opera-tion of the alternator, diodes, field, and ability to charge at idle andat higher rpm but will not show a drain. To find a drain they willneed to perform is a current drain test. Most shops with this typeof tool will also have an electronic battery testing tool. It is pos-sible that you have had a run of bad luck with two bad batter-ies. It has happened to us in our shop before.
