FROM TIM PYLES
Welcome to the Broken Arrow Church of Christ! I am writing this article, not primarily for those who are members of this congrega-tion or who may attend here regularly, but for those of you who may have joined us this morning at the invitation of a friend or fami-ly member. Maybe you attended here at some point in the past, but it has been a long time since you have been here on a Sunday morning. Perhaps you were just driving by on Kenosha St. this past week and noticed that we were having a service at 9:00 and were looking for a church to attend on Easter Sunday. Regardless of who or what led you to be here, please know that we are thrilled and honored that you have chosen to spend this morning with us in worship to God, in the study of His word, and in fellowship with oth-er believers. It is our hope and prayer that you have been warmly welcomed, that you will find the praise songs and hymns to be affirming to your faith and encouraging to your heart, and that you will find truth and relevance in the message that is shared. Our sharing in the bread and the cup in the Lord’s Supper is something that we do each and every Sunday in memory of the sacrificial body and blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Especially on Easter, we re-member that not only did Jesus die for our sins according the Scrip-tures and that was buried, but that he was also raised to new life on the third day (I Corinthians 15:3-4). This is the very heart of our faith: the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Apart from those foundational truths of the Christian faith, nothing else makes any sense; they are the building blocks of belief in Jesus upon which eve-rything else stands or falls.
It may the case that you have some questions about something in the service this morning (something that we did or something that we didn’t do) or something that was said during the sermon. If that’s the case, then thank you! Thank you for having an open and inquiring mind when it comes to matters of the Spirit. It might also be the case that there are just some things about the Christian faith that are confusing or perplexing to you, or you’ve wondered why believers in God and in Jesus Christ often differ about so many things.
Whether it’s an old question or a new question that you have this morning, or just something that you would like to discuss, I will be in the Fellowship Hall (just across the foyer from our assembly area) during our Bible class hour from 10:30 to 11:15. I would be thrilled to meet with as many as would like to be involved in an open discus-sion of questions that you may have. Also, if you are currently not attending a Sunday morning Bible class, I would love to have you join us as well.
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)
He is risen! He is risen indeed!

“Pearl of Great Price” TONIGHT: We had a wonderful LTC conference Friday and Saturday.
NO activity tonight.
In Mike’s Baskett
An artist from Seattle has created a form of street art that is guaranteed to brighten up your rainy day.
Rainworks, the brainchild of Peregrine Church (cool name huh?), is a form of water-activated art that only becomes visible when it’s raining. Peregrine came up with the concept when he discovered super-hydrophobic coating – a nanoscopic surface layer that repels water. Travelling around the streets of his native Seattle, Peregrine sprays through stencils to create motivational messages – that are initially in-visible – on the ground.
Demonstrating his work in the video (to watch, go to YouTube - type in: “Rainworks – Rain-activated Art.”), Peregrine throws a bucket of water onto a piece of inconspicuous pavement and from nowhere a hopscotch appears on the floor. Discussing his work, he says: “I make things that make the world a more interesting place like a Rainwork.” He notes that Seattle is a place synonymous with rainfall and that his artwork is there-fore ideal for the seaport city. The video concludes with the artist posi-tively noting: “It’s going to rain no matter what, so why not do something cool with it?”
Spiritually, we face some rain storms too! We need God’s inspirational messages in our minds and in our hearts to strengthen and motivate us when we face stormy days. God reminds us to: "Rejoice in the Lord al-ways, I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer & petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts & your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:4-7.) and “I pray that out of His glori-ous riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your in-ner being.” (Ephesians 3:16). and “Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.” (Psalm 57:1).
To re-quote Peregrine – “It’s going to rain no matter what, so why not do something cool with it… remember the promises of God?!?” Also re-member: the “rainbow” is coming! Have a great week!

GROWING UP IN CHRIST
HOW GENTLENESS MAKES US GREAT
Twice in Scripture, David testifies, “Thy gentleness hath made me great” (2 Samuel 22:36; Psalm 18:35; KJV). In these passages, the Hebrew word for great is rabah. It means “to increase greatly or exceedingly, to enlarge; to become many, to make much; to multiply.”
Gentleness begins with pain and sorrow and ends in an abundant increase. This is the way of God. If we die to ourselves, we will live; if we give bountifully, we will re-ceive bountifully; if we sow in tears we will reap in joy.
The life of Jabez is a beautiful picture of the meaning and potential of gentleness. Jabez means “sorrow.” His mother gave him this name because she “bare him with sorrow.” Names in the days of Jabez were very important. Often they were predictors of a person’s future. However, Jabez wanted to change the focus and goal of his life, so he called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request” (1 Chronicles 4:10).
When James describes the qualities of wisdom, he includes gentleness; “But the wis-dom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy” (James 3:17).
The gentleness that comes from true wisdom is the result of an understanding heart. That is exactly what Solomon requested from the Lord: “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people” (1 Kings 3:9). The Hebrew word for under-standing in this passage is shama. Shama is used in the following passage for the word hear: “Hear [shama], O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them” (Deuteronomy 5:1). Thus, gentleness is the result of a hearing heart.
The word shama is also translated obey in Scripture. As we listen to the Word of God and follow the conviction of the Holy Spirit, we will escape the harshness and corrup-tion of the lusts of the flesh and experience the fruit of the Spirit, which is “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” (Galatians 5:22-23). The word gentleness in this passage is chrestotes, which refers to moral excellence in character and attitude.
A practical expression of wisdom and gentleness is to speak evil of no one and to seek peace and harmony with everyone. “Put them in mind… to speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men” (Titus 3:1-2).
Gentleness is supporting others during their time of weakness so that they can achieve their full potential in the Lord. Margaret Sangster once said, “Few of us will ever have the opportunity to perform great deeds of heroism, but to every one of us there is given the chance day by day to be sweet and gracious and winsome.”
