1 April 2O15 EDITION Editor: Lion Lynn Fredericks – [email protected] Hello all Lions, Firstly let me congratulate Lion Barry Gleeson on his efforts over the past years in generating this wonderful newsletter and let’s also thank him for his persistence. Barry has now handed over the job to me to continue and the hope is that we can continue to present the Corowa Lions with a newsy and interesting newsletter. Having said this it is your newsletter and I request, as Barry did, that you supply us with items. I would ask all of you to think about what you would like to see in the newsletter and let me know. The standard items like Dates to remember, Birthdays, the Water roster and jokes will remain but things like what you as members are doing and activities etc. will need to be written and supplied possibly by the Vice Presidents. We have had two deaths in recent weeks of Corowa Lions family members and we offer our deepest sympathy to Lion Phyl May in the passing of her husband Gill and also to Lion Secretary Graham Withers for the passing of his mother Dot. Our condolences to you both. The MD Convention being held in Newcastle is again fast approaching and it’s not too late to register. Let’s not forget that we have our District Convention also fast approaching. This Convention is being held in Lavington and will be very easy for us to attend so get your registrations in now. (See the ad in this newsletter.) Let me wish the new Board members that have been elected for the 2015-16 Lions year all the best and I know that you will have a fantastic and productive year under your new President Lion Andrew. Congratulations to Lion Barry Gleeson on his recent win of $100 when his lucky number came up at the February Lions social night. Barry was heard to say that he will be sharing this win with his dear wife Marleen when they next visit the Corowa RSL Club. Cheers President Lynn

Two Italian mates leave the pub late one night very intoxicated and look in vain for a Taxi or a bus. Sergio says to Gino “we will have to walk home, Gino!” Gino explains, “no I have a better idea, lets borrow a bus from the bus Depot. and drive it home – we can bring it back early in the morning and no one will ever know!” “Okay” says Sergio - so of they go to steal a bus. “I’ll wait here and keep an eye open while you get the bus” says Gino. Sergio is gone for ages and Gino is getting nervous so he goes looking for him, “why are you taking so long Sergio” says Gino “well I can’t find a number 96” - “Oh don’t be silly” says Gino “we’ll take and number 48 and we can walk home from the round-about”

St. patricks night 2015 The Lions Clubs of Rutherglen and Corowa recently got together and celebrated St. Patricks Day in the Corowa Lions Club rooms. Rutherglen Lions organized the night and Lions Julie Simpson and Betty Potter arranged some trivia and other activities for the night. The Greenest Lady was won by Lion Ann and the Greenest man was Lion Bill Reeves. It was great to see that so many got into the spirit of the occasion by getting into something green. A great night was had by all. Pictured below are some of the Lions and visitors that enjoyed the evening.

District Leo of the Year 2015

LATE NOTICE: Caitlyn Moore wins State Leo of the Year and now goes

to the National Lions Convention in Newcastle.

Corowa Leo Caitlyn Moore competed in the Leo of the year on Sunday the 15th March at the Corowa Lions club rooms, she won that section. She will now go onto the second stage to speak at Marion Girls College in Melbourne on Sunday 22nd March, and if she is successful on Sunday she will go to the National Lions Convention at Newcastle to compete again. Caitlyn fought off two other district Leos Jasmin Clarke from the Cobram on the Murray Leo Club and Nicholas Megarrite from the Tungamah Leo club. Caitlyn won both the Public speaking and the overall winner categories. Senior judge commented that Caitlyn has the potential to go all the way.

The Zone Youth of the Year was conducted on the 8th March in Corowa and our own Corowa girl Mary Schnelle won the day. Mary then went on to compete in the District Finals held in Nathalia on the 22nd March where she did very well however she dose not go forward from here. The District Finals were a hard fought affair with Winona Horton from Albury the overall winner and Chloe O’Bryan winning the Public speaking section. Winona now goes on to the State finals being held in Ballarat on the 11th April.

Echuca Convention gives to V6 Foundation

“Leo Convention abandoned”

After much deliberation and it was decided to abandon the proposed Leo Convention to be held in Corowa on the weekend of the 27th,28th & 29th March. There had been a great deal of work put into this by Lions and Leos across the District over the past months however with the drastic lack of interest and registration the committee thought it better to postpone the Convention till another time. Leo clubs around the district will be canvassed to secure more interest and a bigger commitment in regards to attendance before any moves are made to re-organize another Convention. Much was learned from this effort and in the future the Leos will be given more opportunity to organize this type of event for themselves. Lions should guide and assist the Leo clubs in this but the feeling is that they drive the event themselves. In doing this the Leos will have better ownership of the convention and this will encourage a more positive involvement. There was a great deal of disappointment after the announcement however after the wash up I believe that we will all be in a better situation to organize another event later.

Beyondblue –Joining Hands a Lions project. This evening was conducted on the 26th February and although a small number of local residents came the night was still claimed to be a success. After the presentation by Beyondblue ambassador Rebecca Moore a couple of people approached local health workers to ask more questions about mental health services in Corowa & District. At the recent District Cabinet meeting Echuca Lion PDG Barry Higgins presented a cheque for $1500 to V6 Foundation Chairman IPDG Lynn Fredericks. This money was a portion of the balance left over from the Echuca V6 District Convention.
