The vine was one of Jesus’s powerful images for himself and he uses it to illustrate to his disciples the closeness and intimacy of their relationship. He was not merely their teacher and they were not just his students. They were mutually dependent on each other just as a vine and its branches. How so? I was reading a reflection from Wellsprings and it captures the image quite well. “To produce fruit true to type, a vine is grafted onto a strong rootstock - two plants, in effect become one. The rootstock goes deep into the ground drawing up the nutrients the plant needs. In their turn, the branches grow from the main plant and break into leaf and tendril. The problem is that, left to themselves, the branches will grow and grow... this may be a joy to watch and a fine example of exuberant growth but it is, unfortunately, at the expense of any grapes that may be trying to grow on the vine. The plant is so busy sending energy to the farthest reaches of the branches that the poor grapes get by-passed! “So, it is necessary for the vine-dresser to curb the branches’ enthusiasm: the branches are pruned back almost to the grapes so that the energy is channelled into fruitfulness and not into foliage! At the same time, any branches not bearing fruit are removed - again so that the plant’s energy is directed to its fruit.” These words can be directed to both churches and to us as individuals. Christ is the true vine. We are the branches. And we have but one job. That is to bear fruit. That is why we have been called together as a community. We are not here simply to enjoy one another’s company as enjoyable as that may be. We are here to be nourished so that we may bear fruit in our homes, in our community and in the world for which Christ died. So the question for the day is . . . where is your fruit? Is our church a better church because you are here? Is your home a better home because you are here? Is the world a better place because you are here? Where is your fruit? We produce fruit by staying connected to the vine. Later in this passage Christ says, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can
you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the
branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;
apart from me you can do nothing . . .” Again, the message is clear. The secret to bearing fruit is staying connected to Christ.

The Sacrament of Anointing will be celebrated during Mass. Some ask “How sick have you to be to qualify?” It is a sacrament of healing for what in us yearns for fullness of health; it is certainly not reserved for those who are extremely ill, though of course, the sacrament is especially concerned for the very ill. (Let us know at the Office by Tuesday if transport is needed - 3355 2667)
Any parents wishing to have their child baptised in the parishes of Mitchelton & Grovely, are asked to attend the Baptism Preparation Programme before the date of baptism. This coming Monday, April 30, the former Bishop of Toowoomba, Bill Morris, will speak at the Mary MacKillop Centre at St. Williams from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. The topic will be “The Mission has a Church, the Church does not have a Mission”.
He is an excellent speaker with inspirational ideas for how we, the Church, can confidently and enthusiastically move forward in the 21 st century. To cover expenses, a gold coin donation is appreciated.
His presentation comes at an opportune time for us in this area, with the Plenary Council process about to commence. Pope Francis has given the green light to the Australian Church to proceed with such a Council and to invite all Catholics (clergy and laity) to contribute ideas as to how the Church might best move forward in such changing times.
Perhaps we need a new paradigm, a renewed way of looking at the Church – certainly a renewed way of looking at “mission”. This talk will put ideas out there for us to consider as we think about how we might respond. Indeed, we the laity, need to respond. The second Vatican Council (1962 – 65) said that we, together with the clergy, are the Church.
Jesus outlined the Mission when he walked the earth. He modelled “mission” for us. His concept of “mission” was altered somewhat as the centuries went by. What exactly was that original concept? Should we return to it and if so, how?
Bishop Emeritus, Bill Morris, will speak this coming Monday – why not come along?
On Wednesday just gone many of us went to an ANZAC day service or parade and reflected on the sacrifice of those that fought at Gallipoli where the legend of ANZAC was forged. Over the years ANZAC day has taken on greater proportions, becoming an opportunity to remember and pay respects to those that have fought for our country, many of whom have paid the ultimate price.
But memory goes so far: for those that have donned the uniform of our nation, many who have been subject or witness to unspeakable acts, the effects of war or conflict have continued long after their return home or to civilian life. And the impacts are not only visited upon the women and men of the armed services, but their families as well.
There are currently around 54,000 serving members (including Reserve members) of the Australian defence force, and around 5,000 of those transition from military to civilian life each year. And that’s not an easy transition. Many men and women are affected by injuries, physical or psychological, with high rates of PTSD and ex-serving men exhibiting a higher risk of suicide than their peers. Veteran unemployment is at 30.2 per cent, more than five times the national average.
Generation after generation we have seen the effects of war, the compounding impact of poor treatment on their return to Australia (think of our Vietnam veterans), and the struggles many have had to get recognised by the government structures created to “support them”.
We now have an opportunity to write a different story: for neighbours, community groups, churches, and employers to embrace veterans and their families, and to ask the question “what can I do to help?”.
Lest we forget.

It was Palm Sunday but because of a sore throat, 5-year-old Johnny stayed home
from church with a sitter.
When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm fronds. Johnny asked them what they were for. "People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by," his father told him. "Wouldn't you know it," Johnny fumed, "the one Sunday I don't go and he shows up." A Sunday school teacher asked her
class why Joseph and Mary took
Jesus with them to Jerusalem. A
small child replied, ‘They couldn’t
get a baby-sitter’.
