Prompts for Story Writing

1. Imagine that your parent(s) took you on a vacation to an unfamiliar place and you got lost. Write a story about what happened to you before your parent(s) found you again.

2. Think about spending the night at school during a blizzard with your teacher and your three best friends. In a story, describe the adventures that you might have in a deserted school building.

3. Write a story about meeting and spending the day with a famous person. The famous person could be a movie star, a politician, a musician, an athlete, or anyone else who you might like to have an adventure with.

4. Many fairy tales begin with the famous line "Once upon a time." Write your own "Once upon a time" story.

5. Write a short story that involves you and some friends in an outdoor setting. You might be playing a sport, camping in the woods, attending a special event, or playing at the beach. Make sure you have a good problem in your story that needs to be resolved.

6. Write a story that takes place on your favorite holiday.

7. Pretend that you have just won a prize for doing something wonderful. Tell a story about what led up to your big win.

8. Write a story about a cartoon character who turns real and is hired to be a substitute teacher in your school. Describe what happens. Include a problem that must be solved.

9. Think about what it woµld be like to live in a country that you have read about or studied in class. Write a story about taking a field trip to this country with a group of your friends. Include facts about this country in your descriptions of the setting and the events.
