Our Mission:Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

Dear Friends,

The Church continues the Easter celebration for fifty days until the great feast of Pentecost which is on May 31 this year.

In many ways it seems like we are still in Lent with the Covid 19 virus. We are all suffering in some way. There are those that have contracted the virus and even those who have died from it. I get weary watching the news each day as I hear about the number of deaths and the diagnosed number of new cases. I’ve decided that I only watch the news at 6PM now to lessen my anxiety.

Many live in fear. Are our lives ever going to return to normal? What will the new normal be for us? What is this going to mean for us-the Church?

I say Mass every day by myself for you. Last weekend I almost broke down in the middle of the Mass. It struck me in a particular way that I was doubting the Lord’s presence like Thomas was in last weeks Gospel. Where is the Lord in our new reality? When will we ever be able to gather with each other in our Church building? When will we receive Holy Communion again without fear of contagion?

As I consecrated the bread and wine I felt hope that the Lord is truly with us. The day will come when we are all together again. We need to believe even if we don’t see that the Lord is with us.

This Sunday we have a beautiful post Easter Gospel. I hope that you read it reflectively in your home and with you family. It speaks very directly to our current situation.

The disciples are on the road to Emmaus. There are only two of them. The others I suspect were quarantined out of fear of the Jews.

The story tells us that Jesus accompanied the two while on the journey, but the disciples didn’t recognize Him. There is an exchange between the two disciples and Jesus about the events of

the past days. The two tell Jesus about His own passion, suffering and death. They recount the story of the women who found the tomb empty, but they don’t know what happen to Jesus.

Jesus then recounts the stories from Scripture that prefigure his death and Resurrection. The two still don’t recognize Him.

They ask him to stay the night with them as it is evening. While they were sharing the bread, they recognized that It was the Lord. In the breaking of the Bread did that recognition come!

We seem to be on a path that lead to a place that is unfamiliar to us. None of us have ever experience a pandemic of such magnitude. We must be on the journey with others at least two by two. We do not need to be fearful if we recall other moments of uncertainty. We have made it through. Looking back, we realize that the Lord was always with us.

In this time of uncertainty let’s rediscover His presence when we break bread and share food with those that we love.

Once we reaffirm His presence, we find as the two disciples in the story, that we have nothing to fear. The Lord is with us Alleluia!!!

I’m continually impressed with the generosity of the necessary workers. Some are members of our parish. They are doctors, nurses, hospital workers, fire and police personnel, grocery store clerks and others. They risk their lives every day so that others may live. We should offer a prayer of thanksgiving for them each day.

Stay healthy, be safe, let’s continue to pray for each other.

Gratefully,

Father Patrick M Marshall

EVANGELIZATION 102 WITH SISTER DIANE MARIE

Evangelization has been described as reaching out to our brothers and sisters who are inactive Catholics. Some months ago we reflected upon who these people are. Looking deeper it is obvious that the description of inactive or fallen away Catholics has more than one level of meaning.

Some attend Mass only once a month or maybe a little more. However, travel, work, events, etc. are barriers to attending Mass. Mass is still important but it’s no longer a priority.

Others identify themselves as Catholic even if they are not actively practicing their faith and are affiliated with a parish in name only. When filling out religious affiliation forms or entering the hospital they put “Catholic” in the blank.

The remaining group was baptized and raised Catholic, but no longer consider themselves Catholic.

The way in which we approach them is very important. Our attitude must be non-judgmental, realizing that they all still have some connection to the faith through Baptism. They also may be generous in giving of themselves through time, talent and treasure. It cannot be forgotten that they too have experienced some degree of religious training. They might be people of prayer that seldom take part in worship. We are not more worthy or wonderful in God’s sight. Our attitude needs to enable us to see ourselves as connected rather than separate and better.

We need to learn how to approach them and talk with them. Those feeling more disengaged from the Church will need more discussion and sharing about things like the purpose of life, dreams and values. Let them talk. Listen carefully to what they have to say. Do not preach. At the end of the conversation, show gratitude for the opportunity to share and offer to meet again.

Some of those who have a little more connection may need a type of Town Hall meeting where they can ask questions and talk in a safe, secure environment, or smaller groups meeting in a more casual home setting. There are more formal programs available as well.

Who do we approach? People registered as parishioners that we never see; Parents with children in our school or religious education program who are not actively involved but want their children to receive the sacraments; and young adults.

Look for common ground. We are all on this road of life together connected by our humanity and our shared faith.

“. . .leave all behind and go forth ever anew to proclaim the Gospel.” (The Joy of the Gospel - Pope Francis).

Blessings, Sister Diane Marie Collins

No predicando.

School News

St. John Berchmans E-Learning Continues

Governor Pritzker announced that in-class school is suspended for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. This is disappointing news, especially for our 8th graders, but SJB teachers and staff are ready to continue the outstanding e-learning that is in place. In addition to structured daily lessons via Seesaw and Showbie, our teachers have multiple weekly Zoom calls, virtual parent teacher conferences, online teaching and recorded classes, tuition relief plan, daily

prayers on social media, technology assistance, and counselors on-hand for social and emotional support. We love our innovative teachers. We are proud of our adaptive students. We are so very grateful for SJB’s supportive, patient parents as we all navigate this temporary, new pandemic “normal.” Peace and blessings to the St. John Berchmans School community. We will get through this #TogetherWhileApart and stay #SJBstrong!

¡Seguiremos adelante #TogetherWhileApart y mantengamons unidos #SJBstrong!
