In this week’s Gospel, we hear how two disciples encountered the Risen Lord Jesus on a road to the village of Emmaus, about seven miles outside Jerusalem. These two disciples were dejected, saddened, and disappointed because Jesus died on a cross. At first, “their eyes were prevented” from recognizing Him. As they walked along, Jesus, still hidden from their sight, explains how in God’s plan, revealed in Sacred Scriptures, the promised Messiah would have to suffer, die, and be raised on the third day for the redemption of Israel. “Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to Him in all the Scriptures.” (Luke 24:27) Then, after opening Scriptures, our Risen Lord shows Himself in the meal they shared with Him. “And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.” (Luke 24: 30) In the encounter of these two disciples with the Risen Lord, we can clearly see the two major parts of the Mass – the Liturgy of the Word, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. In the first major part, the Liturgy of the Word, we attentively listen to the Word of God proclaimed in the readings from Sacred Scriptures. After hearing and reflecting on God’s Word, we then celebrate the second major part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Eucharist. At this part, we are mystically made present at the Lord’s Supper, at which Jesus takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to His Apostles in the upper room in anticipation of the sacrifice He would make of Himself on the Cross. In the New Testament, when we hear “the breaking of bread,” we think of the Eucharist. Very shortly after the Resurrection, the young Church did what Jesus did on the night of the Lord’s Supper. In every Mass, the Risen Lord Jesus is made known to us, just as He was revealed to the two disciples on the road, “in the breaking of the bread.” At times, we too are “prevented” from seeing Jesus. However, like these disappointed and dejected disciples, Jesus still walks with us. In this week’s Gospel, we hear how two disciples encountered the Risen Lord Jesus on a road to the village of Emmaus, about seven miles outside Jerusalem. These two disciples were dejected, saddened, and disappointed

because Jesus died on a cross. At first, “their eyes were prevented” from recognizing Him. BLESSED ARE THE SIMPLE (pt. 1) By Doug Beaumont, DRE

In his famous Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), Jesus dis-cussed the “Beatitudes” - rewards that would come to those who lived lives devoted in one way or another to God. To some he promised comfort, to others satisfaction - some were pledged the whole earth! Yet the greatest reward of all was to be given to the pure in heart: “They shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). This is why heaven is often referred to as the “Beatific Vision.” Eternal life is knowing God (John 17:3). Based on Jesus’ words, the Church teaches that, “purity of heart is the precondition of the vision of God.” (CCC 2519). In this se-ries we will look at how we can become more pure of heart – but not just by acting morally. Peter Kreeft has argued in a won-derful little chapter in his book Making Choices that, “one of the most powerful obstacles to living a moral life in our immoral world is our conformity to the world’s structures of complexi-ty” (p.147). If simplifying our lives to make the moral life more easily attaina-ble sounds like an odd approach – it is! It’s odd in our modern world for sure – but not to the saints (those whose hearts are certainly pure).

Scripture and the teachings of the Church. If we are open to what He has already revealed, we can see something new in it, and “our hearts will burn within us.” We will then be more ready to recognize the presence and power of our Risen Lord Jesus, particularly in our worship of God at every Mass. Let us ask God, through the intercessions of the Virgin Mary and our Patron, St. Joseph, to grant us the grace to more clearly see our Risen Lord Jesus as we actively participate in the celebration of the Mass, in the “Breaking of the Bread.” In Christ Always, Fr. Sam West, Pastor

Prevention, Protection, Accountability April is Child Abuse Prevention Month The Diocese of Stockton affirms its commitment to provide a safe

environment for its children. Under the Chatter for the Protection of Children and Young People established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2002 the Diocese of Stockton has expanded its protection to include children of preschool age as well as vulnerable adults. While the Diocese of Stockton works year-round to prevent abuse, the month of April is designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month a time to be extra diligent in our duty to provide a safe environment for all members of our Church and our community. As members of the Church we value the prevention of abuse and the support of those who have been abused. It is important to be aware of the signs of abuse and report inappropriate behavior to the proper agencies. What's being done in the Diocese of Stockton to Prevent Abuse? We report all allegations of abuse directly to law enforcement. We have a Victim Assistance Coordinator, Cynthia Dragun, whose primary role is to provide resources to survivors for their healing journey. We train adults on how to maintain a safe environment by use of the Virtus online training program. We train minors in all parish religious education programs and in our Catholic schools to identify the warning signs of abuse and inappropriate behavior by use of the Circle of Grace program. We follow all Diocesan policies and procedures to create an environment of protection and healing.
