WELLNESS

Niloofar’s Wellness Tip

What you focus on expands. Imagine if you were in a dark room, and you kept thinking "I've

got to get rid of this darkness!! I need to make this darkness disappear. Must...fight...the

darkness." But you can't make the darkness go away. You can only bring in the light (turn

on the switch, light a candle, etc.) And when you do, the darkness disappears. So anytime

you're trying to fight AGAINST something, you're focusing on that thing, and creating more

of it, or at the very least, not opening yourself to creative solutions. If you're depressed,

don't keep thinking about your depression and how to fight it, think about what makes you

happy, or even just "less depressed" and do that. If you feel like you're not confident

enough, talented enough, etc., don't focus on how to "fix" yourself, which will only cause

you to feel increasingly more "broken". Focus on what is right, focus on what is good, and

the darkness will dissipate.

One example I always think of in my own life, are the struggles with my skin. As a teenager

I developed eczema, and if I wasn't constantly on cortisone my entire neck and back would

break out in oozing, itchy red patches. I would go through phases of obsessive research,

trying to find out about what foods are possibly causing it, reading about every kind of

detergent, spending hours scouring forums...and the issue never resolved and I would ruin

my mood and be hyperfocused on my skin whenever I would go through one of these

phases. I would feel increasingly down and negative. But, once I stopped worrying about it

and let it go, my eczema spontaneously healed and I haven't had to use any skin

medications since 2012. I still obsess about other skin imperfections from time to time, and

I notice that whenever I obsess about how to "fix" my skin, I become increasingly sad or

agitated...but when I let go, any imperfections either clear up on their own (a watched pot

never boils!) or I'm just not as focused on them and so I don't really notice them and they

don't affect my quality of life so much.

Now, don't take this post too literally. I'm not saying that if you have a serious disease you

should "ignore" it and it will go away. Nor am I suggesting anyone should ignore any issues

in their life or relationship and stick their head in the sand....if you do that you're in for a

rude awakening. What I'm talking about is doing what needs to be done (taking any

medications, having any difficult conversations, making responsible choices), but then

CHOOSING to put your FOCUS on what is right. Even if you're not as rich as you'd like,

focus on all the abundance you're attracting in every day. If your relationship isn't as happy

as you'd like, focus on what IS good about your partner and what IS right and how you can

add to that goodness (through perhaps more honesty, more kindness, etc. Don't ask how to

fix the bad, ask how to increase the good. Active focus on the good stuff, will immediately

improve your mood and open you up to even more good (and solutions when necessary.)
