No matter who you are, No matter where you are On life’s journey, You are welcome here. THOUGHT FOR PREPARATION

"The difference between the Christian hope of resurrection and the mythological hope is that the former sends a man back to his life on earth in a wholly new way”.

* HYMN Yours is the Glory, Resurrected One! Black Hymnal No. 253 Yours is the glory, Resurrected One! Endless is the victory you o’er death have won. Angels clothed in radiance rolled the stone away; conquered is the grave in which your body lay. Refrain Yours is the glory, Resurrected One! Endless is the victory you o’er death have won.

See, it is Jesus, Jesus has appeared; do not doubt at all for nothing you will fear. Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing; tell it without ceasing; Death has lost its sting. Refrain Am I still frightened? One who I adore, Jesus lives again, gives peace forever more. Jesus is my victory, life and strength and Head; Jesus is my glory, nothing shall I dread. Refrain

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Sarah Garcia

Redeeming God, with you there is always more life, more hope, and more joy than we can ever imagine.

Forgive us for failing to see your work in the still things, the busy things, and the everyday, under-noticed plod of life.

Forgive us when we balk at action, and refuse to turn on fully the tap of compassion, settling for a mere trickle.

Open us now to your love that lets us relax into life, and fill us with hope and trust in the Risen Christ,

in whose name we pray. Amen. RESPONSE Red Hymnal, No. 288, v. 1

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Nought be all else to me save that thou art. Thou my best thought by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

THE BIBLICAL WORD FOR THIS DAY Allen Heinemann John 20:19-31 (NSRV)

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them.

Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

* A STATEMENT OF FAITH

We believe in God who has created and is creating, who has come to us in Jesus Christ to reconcile and make us new, who works in us and others by the Holy Spirit.

We trust God. God calls us to be the Church, to celebrate God’s presence,

to love and serve others, to care for creation, to seek justice and to resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life and death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God! (adapted from the United Church of Canada)

RESPONSE Red Hymnal, No. 288, v. 3 Riches I heed not, nor life’s empty praise, Thou mine inheritance, now and always; Thou and thou on-ly, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

SERMON Trust Jeff Carlson HYMN We Live by Faith and Not by Sight Black Hymnal No. 256

We live by faith and not by sight; no gracious words we hear from Christ who spoke as none e’er spoke, who still we know is near. We may not touch Christ’s hand and side, nor follow where Christ trod; But in confessing we rejoice: our Savior and our God! Help then, O Christ, our unbelief; and may our faith abound to call on you when you are near and seek you where you are found. That, when our life of faith is done, in realms of clearer light, we may behold you as you are, with full and endless sight.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Matt Fitzgerald THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

* HYMN Crown Him with Many Crowns Red Hymnal No. 309

Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne; Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own;

Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, And hail him as thy matchless king through all eternity. Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave, And rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save; His glories now we sing who died and rose on high,

Who died, eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. Crown him the Lord of love; Behold his hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified; No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright. Crown him the Lord of years, the potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For thou hast died for me; Thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity.

ABOUT ST. PAULS

Making a joyful sound in the city

Saint Pauls UCC has a vibrant history in the city of Chicago. Founded in 1843, we are one of the city's oldest churches. In 1989 we became one of America's first congregations to declare ourselves "Open to and Affirming of” LGBT women and men. From founding Chicago's largest provider of social services to at-risk children to starting a home for the elderly, from housing protestors at the 1968 Democratic Convention to hosting Lincoln Park's first MLK day march against violence on Chicago's streets we are proud to make a joyful sound in the city. Most importantly, over the past 172 years we are glad to have introduced thousands of children and adults to the amazing, inclusive, life changing, uplifting love of God. We do so in worship that is traditional, but far from conventional.
