Do This In Memory of Me - Holy Orders Many people are puzzled by the name of one of the seven sacraments of the Church: Holy Orders. We usually think of the word “order” as meaning “command,” so the term “Holy Orders” should seem to indicate a holy command, such as “Go to Mass on Sundays!” But the name of this sacrament is using an ancient meaning of “order” as a governing body. Holy Orders is the sacrament by which a person enters one of the three governing bodies of the Catholic Church, as a deacon, a priest, or a bishop. They enter those ORDERS by being ORDAINED. So just what is a priest? In a general sense, a priest is somebody who acts on behalf of others in relation to God, as a kind of mediator between human beings and God. In ancient times a father sometimes offered a sacrifice to God on behalf of his family, or a king offered a sacrifice to God on behalf of his people. In this general sense, they were acting as priests. In this general sense, God wanted His chosen people, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to be “a kingdom of priests” (Exodus 19:6). But in a special way, God chose men from one of the twelve tribes of Israel, the tribe of Levi, to be His liturgical priests to minister on behalf of their people. In the Old Testament, the Levites were the ministerial priests, they were the only ones who were allowed to carry the sacred Ark of the Covenant and to offer sacrifices to God in His Holy Temple, on behalf of the people of Israel. Those ancient priests, however, were sinners. So they could not by their sacrifices or prayers obtain the forgiveness of sins. They were only a foreshadowing, a preparation for the only perfect Priest, the only perfect Mediator between human beings and God, Jesus Christ Himself. Jesus is the perfect Priest because He is both 100% human and 100% God, so His sacrifice of Himself is the perfect sacrifice without blemish, which obtains forgiveness for our sins (Hebrews 1:11-18). Jesus, the perfect Priest, offered Himself on the Cross on Good Friday, as the perfect sacrifice to pay the price for our sins. But the night before He died on the Cross, He gave us a sacramental re-presentation of this Sacrifice in the Holy Mass. He consecrated, separately, bread and wine to become His actual Body and Blood. A body separated from blood is a dramatic symbol of death, but since the Eucharist is the true Body and Blood of Jesus, at every Mass we are present to the true sacrifice of Jesus, presented to us in a sacramental way. This does NOT mean that Jesus dies over and over again! He only died once, for all time. But at every Holy Mass, by God’s power, we are truly present to that sacrifice. The plan of Jesus was to ascend to heaven, yet He wanted ministerial priests to remain on earth to participate in His one perfect Priesthood. So Jesus instituted the sacramental priesthood at the Last Supper when He celebrated the Eucharist and told His Apostles (who were also His first bishops and priests) “Do this in memory of Me” (1 Corinthians 11:24-25). After His death and resurrection, Jesus gave His apostles the power to forgive sins (John 20:19-23). After the death of Judas, the Apostles handed on to Matthias the authority they had been given by Jesus (Acts 1:15-26). This apostolic authority has been handed on through the centuries to other bishops, including our own Bishop James Tamayo. That is why bishops have the authority to ordain men as priests. This weekend we have the great joy of celebrating the ordination of Deacon Juan Mercado, and his twin brother Pedro, to the priesthood. May our Heavenly Father truly fill them with the Holy Spirit, that they may be devout ministers of the sacraments and examples by their way of life, to lovingly shepherd their people to follow more closely the perfect Priest, Jesus Christ!
