PRE-INSTITUTE | WEDNESDAY 9am-5pm
The Business Value of EAP Services: Finding Your ROI StorySUMMARYThis full-day workshop explains how to
conceptualize and calculate the financial return on
investment (ROI) for employee assistance program
(EAP) services. It brings together the facts and
figures from the global academic and applied
research literature that documents the business
value of workplace behavioral health services.
Over his 20 years as a researcher, Mark Attridge
has developed a data-driven ROI logic model
and consulting approach that can help the EAP
program manager to think less like a provider of
services and more like a purchaser of services.
The goal of the training is to offer an evidence-
based comprehensive approach to ROI so that
each EAP can more confidently find their own
ROI story. This training is designed for people with
moderate to advanced knowledge of the EAP field.
OVERVIEW(Morning) Participants will begin by reviewing
the logic and empirical evidence for what EAP
does and why it is valuable. Mark will propose
four different conceptual approaches or paths to
value. Building the business case starts with the
Primary Path to Value, which follows the traditional
fee-for-service approach used by other employee
benefit programs. Some EAPs can increase their
ROI with outcomes from the Pareto Path to Value,
which focuses on avoiding health care claims
costs and employee turnover costs sometimes
associated with cases that have more severe
and chronic conditions (i.e., anxiety, depression,
alcohol and other addictions). Most EAPs can
also rely on the Productivity Path to Value to
produce the majority of their ROI total savings, as
modest improvements in employee absenteeism
and presenteeism usually follow EAP counseling.
Topping off the ROI story is the Partnership
Path to Value, which is created when EAPs are
actively integrated into other workplace programs
(such as work-life, wellness, occupational safety,
and disability). Each EAP can use a different
combination of the conceptual approaches
to best fit their program delivery model and
customer context.
(Afternoon) After lunch (included in the registration
fee), the emphasis shifts from conceptual
approaches to practical application. Participants
will debate which factors contribute most to a
higher or lower ROI and review industry best
practices for outcomes measurement, clinical
quality, and utilization metrics. The investment side
of ROI is also examined in a discussion of the
wide variation in market pricing of EAP services
and the implications it has for program promotion,
usage and ultimate value expectations. There is
also a hands-on activity of conducting an ROI
math analysis with Mark’s Excel-based calculator
tool and presentation of the results to the group
(what’s your ROI?). The day concludes with a
review of recent trends in the field that offer new
ways for EAPs to deliver more business value
(i.e., workplace wellness in the United States, the
Canadian standards for psychological health and
safety in the workplace, and using technology tools
for clinical service delivery).
5
FORMATThe training involves a lively mix of formal
instruction with slide support, business case study
and research data examples, structured handouts
for guided note taking, an ROI calculator tool
demonstration, personal assessments and small
group activities. Open discussion and Q&A is
expected throughout the day.
RESOURCES PROVIDEDEach participants will receive a USB drive with
a digital library of key resource articles and
reports in PDF format, as well as the Excel-based
calculator tool for estimating the ROI for EAP.
WHAT YOU SHOULD BRINGTo make the most of the ROI tool demonstration,
Mark encourages you to bring along a sample
utilization report from your EAP and your laptop
computer.
IMPORTANT TO EAP PRACTICEFor an EAP vendor to be successful in retaining and
growing customers, or for an Internal EA program to
protect its budget and staff, it is critical to understand
what to measure and how to show the value to
the purchaser of the program – the true customer.
The future success of our industry will come from
delivering greater business value through enhancing
the breadth and depth of EAP services rather than
from lowering the price or quality of existing services.
Participants in this workshop will learn key business
concepts and the right language to use in effectively
articulating and defending their own unique ROI story.

Working Together: How EAPs Assist Highly Regulated IndustriesMODERATOR: Brendan Young
EAPs are a valued component to any
organization’s health and wellness strategy
and have proven to support organizational
effectiveness by increasing employee productivity
and engagement. However, the impact of how
EAPs support organizations that are highly
regulated has not been well documented or
discussed. This panel discussion will focus on
how EAPs have supported various communities
by adapting their protocols to take into account
unique work cultures, policies and requirements
to comply with legislation, including public
safety concerns. Panelists will be asked a series
of questions on how they have worked with
their EAP provider to help them with issues of
legislative compliance and also solicit their views
on how EAPs might offer additional support in
the future.
INSTRUCTOR Lisa Teems has been a leader
in the employee assistance field for 35 years.
Currently she manages the EAP and suicide
prevention programs for the US Coast Guard,
leading an effort to redesign these services with
prevention as a focus. Prior to the Coast Guard,
Lisa worked in various roles at the US Department
of Health and Human Services including leading
their EAP and developing strategies for guiding
EAPs into the future. She has also led EAPs in the
private sector. She has published and presented
on numerous mental health topics, EAP
operations, addictions, AIDS in the workplace,
violence in the workplace, the future of EAPs,
and quality assurance topics. She completed her
first book on the reinvention of the mental health
field. Lisa received her undergraduate and Master
of Social Work degrees from the University of
Maryland and her Doctorate in Ministry from
Wisdom University in San Francisco.
Lyne Wilson is the Director, Human Resources and

The New Brain Science: A Clinical Tool for the EAP Practitioners EAP clinicians are repeatedly expected to have
tools to respond quickly and succinctly to a
myriad of problems their clients bring to the office.
Knowledge about the brain has become a new
tool the EAP practitioner can use. In the past 10
years the field of neuroscience has exploded in
its understanding of the brains interplay with our
emotional experience of the world. By educating
our clients about how their brain works in a simple
format, we offer them a tool that not only gives
them a sense of control of their emotions but
also decreases the shame they often experience
when encountering emotions that feel out of
control. This presentation is based on the
research of Daniel Siegel, MD, Rudie Tanzi, MD,
and Rick Hanson, PhD, who provide the latest
explanation and tools for managing our emotional
wellbeing. The presentation will teach them in a
format that EAP clinicians can easily learn and
then use with their clients. When clients are
empowered with knowledge of what is happening
in their brain, when their emotions feel out of
control, they can to build new skills in managing
and responding to a multitude of situations.
INSTRUCTOR Ina Bachman is a Senior
Consultant for the Federal Occupational Health
EAP where she has been providing clinical
EAP services for the Federal Government since
1997. She has facilitated over 250 trainings
regarding occupational health and workplace
issues. She provided training at the EAPA 2014
Spring Symposium for the MA/RI Chapter on the
same topic. Ina has participated in the following
Neuroscience Courses: Rethinking Trauma:
NICABM Trauma and Neuroscience Webinar
2014; Interpersonal Neurobiology, Steven
Krugman PhD, MSPP, 2012; Relationships and
the Power to Change the Brain, Daniel Siegel MD,

EAP Critical Incident Response: Operationalizing ResilienceResearch has repeatedly demonstrated that
resilience is the most prevalent outcome following
adversity without intervention. How this happens
and more importantly, how can EAPs deploy
intervention strategies that not only enhance this
outcome, but not impede it, is the subject of this
presentation. We will identify the organizational
and the individual attributes that, when engaged,
will influence outcomes and create an upward
trajectory of resilience. EAP CIR is an active,
time-limited opportunity, that not only creates
the conditions for resilience to flourish, but also
sets the stage for ongoing systemic changes
and growth. This presentation encourages active
discussion designed to apply principles and
methodology to the unique workplace cultures
represented by attendees.
INSTRUCTOR Robert Intveld has been in the
EAP field for over 25 years and has received
citations for his response work at Columbine
High School, Oklahoma City, 9/11 NYC, and
Newtown, CT. He received the 2003 EAPA
Special Achievement Award for his work in Critical
Incident Response and serves on the EAPA
Workplace Preparedness panel. Robert has
authored three CIR workshops. The first, in 1998,
modified the Mitchell model to EAP populations;
the second, in 2003, integrated Psychological
First Aid and the third (present), which
provides solutions to the CISM controversies
by its emphasis on operationalizing the key
components of Resilience.

state employee EAP participants with a matched
comparison group of state employees not
receiving services. Specifically, the presenters
will detail the study’s rationale, parameters, and
challenges. They will reveal pre-publication findings
of the impact of EA services on attendance,
presenteeism, and workplace distress, while
identifying circumstances where EA services are
likely to be most effective.
INSTRUCTOR Melissa Richmond is the Director
of Research and Evaluation at OMNI Institute and
Principal Investigator of the Impact of EA Services
on Workplace Outcomes study. Dr. Richmond
has overseen numerous funded evaluation and
research projects focused on the workplace and is
a published author in journals including the Journal
of Family Psychology and Substance Abuse.
Randi Wood is the Director of the Colorado
State EAP and Co-Investigator of the Impact of
EA Services on Workplace Outcomes. She has
more than 25 years of direct EAP service delivery
experience, is a past President of the Colorado
Chapter, and currently serves on the EAPA Board
of Directors.

PLENARY 4 | THURSDAY 4:30pm-5:15pm
Trends in EAP Research: Panel Presentation PART 1. THE ROLE OF EAP IN ORGANIZATIONAL HEALTH: RESEARCH ON THE INTEGRATION OF EAP, WORK-LIFE, WELLNESS, AND HUMAN RESOURCES
A new research-based conceptual model is
presented that promotes the enhanced role of
EAP and workplace behavioral health services in
contributing to overall organizational health and
performance. EAPs can expand their value as a
business partner to the organizational customer by
creating more linkages with other programs serving
the organization that support different aspects of
the health of individual employees and their families.
Potential partnerships and integrative practices are
identified within each of the three main segments of
the employee health care benefit cost continuum
(prevention, acute events, and chronic conditions).
Forging stronger partnerships with those in human
resources and leadership roles can also create
opportunities for EAP services at the organizational
level. This model supports EASNA’s interest in
creating a new professional certification in the area of
organizational health.
INSTRUCTOR Mark Attridge (see page 5)
PART 2. RESOURCES FOR EAP RESEARCH: AN UPDATE FROM THE PRACTICE-BASED RESEARCH NETWORK STEERING COMMITTEE
Resulting from the 2012 EA Research Summit,
leaders from the EA field formed the Practice-based
Research Network (PBRN) Steering Committee. This
committee has been meeting regularly to discuss
and push forward a research agenda in the EA field.
This presentation will provide a brief update on the
outcomes from this committee to date, including,
results from the first ever PBRN stakeholder survey,
an introduction the EA Digital Archive, and highlights
from a peer-reviewed article submission promoting
a collaborative research agenda between the EAP
and public health fields. Participants will learn what
is going on in the field with regard to research and
how to become an active participant in adding to the
growing evidence base for the EA profession.
INSTRUCTOR Jodi Jacobson Frey, an Associate
Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore,
School of Social Work, chairs the Employee
Assistance Program (EAP) sub-specialization and
the Financial Social Work Initiative. Her MSW and
PhD degrees were earned from the University of
Maryland and her current research focuses on
workplace behavioral health, including the impact
of health and well-being on employee productivity
and safety. She studies the effectiveness of
workplace-based programs such as EAPs, work/
life and financial capability programs. A second area
of interest for her research focuses on traumatic
stress with an emphasis on suicide prevention
with working age adults. Jodi is widely published in
leading peer-reviewed journals and regularly presents
at professional conferences. She is often asked to
speak about her research and its application and
translation to practice.
PART 3. EAP IN THE DIGITAL AGE: PROFILES OF UTILIZATION AND OUTCOMES FOR USERS OF TRADITIONAL AND ONLINE EAP COUNSELING SERVICES
Completed in collaboration with York University’s
Department of Mathematics and Statistics, this
reiteration of our 2013 research paper - “The Digital
Age: How People Are Accessing EAP Services”
- profiles our national data on the usage and
demographic characteristics of counseling clients
12
choosing either the traditional access route into EAP
services via face-to-face and telephonic channels
or the new digital access options of e-mail, e-chat,
video-counseling. This study demonstrates how
digital services can reach increasing numbers of
employees who would otherwise not access EAP
services. Further, this presentation updates on our
latest research agenda at Morneau Shepell.
INSTRUCTOR Barb Veder Working with Shepell,
Canada’s largest provider of Employee Assistance
services, Barb manages the field counselling both
nationally and globally, is the clinical leader of the
Shepell Digital Management team which launched
North America’s first EAP Smartphone application
(My EAP), leads Shepell’s clinical research initiatives,

The productivity of any organization is dependent
on a number of factors: leadership, teamwork,
engagement, morale, as well as employee
wellbeing. The EAP, while concentrating on
employee mental health and wellness, has the
opportunity to link directly into adjacent areas. Why
is it problematic? Not only do most organizations
fear scrutiny, and change, but employees are
mindful that the confidential EAP is there for the
employees and their dependents, not so much the
employer. They know the EAP is not a vehicle for
rants or critiques of the organization, and above all
else they are keen not to breach EAP confidentiality.
So how does one square this circle?
Reaching beyond the traditional bounds of EAP
requires imagination, courage, and a desire for
change in organizational culture. Working closely
with the Executive team or the Human Resource
department, which is always committed to better
engage staff and management, the EAP can
provide certain baseline information to guide the
engagement process. Without compromising
confidentiality, the keystone of any EAP, the EAP
can at intake or follow up, add in generic quality
of workplace, engagement, and job satisfaction
questions, where aggregated data to ensure
confidentiality, would complement other data
gathering processes.
In this way the EAP could serve as a thermometer
of corporate health and wellness. Problematic
areas could be defined in more detail with a
larger employee sample, and further engagement
processes with staff developed. Through the staff
focus groups, interviews or other engagement
sessions, the EAP could lead the charge about
broadening the EAP from simply being a mental
health and wellness program for employees to a
broader mandate.
During the workshop Q&A, Francois and Chris will
lead the discussion about the pros and cons of
broadening the traditional EAP.
INSTRUCTOR Chris Hylton has had his own
firm, CG Hylton Inc. since 1991 and provides
EAP, benefits, and human resource services for
organizations across Canada as well as EAP
providers in the US. Chris is a former member
of the EASNA Board of Directors, CEAPA, and
is a member of EAPA. Chris is pleased to have
spoken on EAP, HR, and employee benefit topics
at conferences and workshops for many years. He
also appeared as a panelist on CBC television’s The
Journal discussing the Canada Pension Plan.

16
the organizations. This training meets the
requirement of the Canadian National Standard

Workplace.

Workplace Experiences and Outcomes Related to Participation in the Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol Program: An Exploratory StudyIn 2013 Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol
Program (FADAP) administrators contracted
with researchers to help them shift paradigms
from measuring clinical to workplace-base
programmatic outcomes. Historically, FADAP
relied on the belief that clinical improvement
leads to work improvement; however, program
stakeholders have collaboratively agreed to
focus directly on measureable workplace
outcomes. Researchers employed a mixed
methods study to identify, through a cooperative
and reflective process with the FADAP Advisory
Board, which workplace outcomes were most
important and best ways to measure them given
the challenges of collecting data in the airline
industry. Results, based on Flight Attendant
(FA) interviews and surveys, revealed that five
workplace outcomes were most important
to measure: absenteeism, engagement,
presenteeism, safety, and interpersonal
relationships. Development of a new data
management system that did not require a
huge investment in resources was immediately
initiated. A collaborative process was used
to educate airline leaders about the changes,
engage them in the data collection process,
and build trust throughout the industry so that
FAs responding to the new questions would feel
safe to report honestly. Presenters will highlight
findings from the research study, the process of
developing and implementing a new outcomes
measurement system throughout the industry,
and lessons learned.
