Dear CAI family,Amid the coronavirus limitations, let us keep in mind the CAI motto: Physical Separation – YES; Social Isolation – NO.
We are determined to sustain meaningful contact with one another. Even one act in that regard would be DAYYENU! Yet we have many!!
We are collectively grateful to so many folks making “check-in” phone calls. DAYYENU!
We are indebted to all of our Staff and Members offering sessions on the CAI Broadcasting Network, to ECC, to the Education Department. DAYYENU!
We are so fortunate to have an amazing Administrative Team of our lay leaders and office personnel. DAYYENU!
I extend blessings for a Passover in good health and safety.
Chag Sameach,
Rabbi Alan Silverstein
Our building may be closed but our school
is OPEN! In such a short time, the faculty of the ECC have found countless new ways to engage our families and ensure that everyone continues to feel the warmth and connection of the ECC. Teachers have been having class meetings on ZOOM, FaceTiming with children, sending videos and lessons, and so much more. Story time has been happening on Facebook Live, and Remini, our communication app, has been dinging all day with new content being shared with the families. Additionally, our families have been sharing beautiful photos of their children at work and at play.
The staff meets regularly to plan together and has been stretching themselves to work in a whole new arena.
We will all be thrilled to be back in our classrooms, but we are proud to be creating a new space to be together during this time.
Our thoughts and prayers and love go out to everyone!
Geula Zamist
Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie likes to say, "You only
need to know four phrases to pray: 1) wow, 2) thank you, 3) please, and 4) whoops."
People have been turning to prayers these days, and I think that is most appropriate. After all, this is a time of global concern and crisis, and I believe that prayer can help. I've received requests from many of you for different kinds of prayers you can say at home, or that we can add to our communal prayers. I want to make sure that as we continue to pray, we not only add special prayers of bakashah — of petition and request for healing. Those prayers are important, of course, but the primary purpose of prayer is to offer praise and to express gratitude — even more than making petition.
So as you continue to pray, I hope that you find moments to say to God, "wow" and "thank you" at least as often as you say "please." Not only to God, but also to each other. Find time to thank the health workers and volunteers who work hard, at great risk to themselves and their families, to serve others. Find time to express wonder at the technology that enables us to stay connected to one another, and at the unexpected blessings that this time makes possible. Those prayers are powerful and important, and we need them now more than ever.
Rabbi Ari Lucas
In March our world was turned upside down, and
we’ve all been struggling to cope with the challenges of this public health threat ever since.
My Voice article (see page 8), which I wrote before the pandemic changed our lives, includes messages that are even more relevant now. I talk about building resilience in children by sharing family stories about hardships and challenges they may have faced but persevered and succeeded in building, or in some cases, rebuilding their lives, growing and learning from their experiences. I presented these ideas keeping in mind the story of Passover and our entire Jewish history — so crowded with turmoil and trials, survival and triumph.
We are now living through a crisis of historic proportions. How will our story of the coronavirus scourge be written? How will our children remember this time? How will we grow and learn from this experience? As always, the tenets of Judaism serve me well: We are encouraged to value and protect human life, recognize the blessings of our lives, embrace the power of community, and never lose hope.
We are physically separated, but our community has reinforced our spiritual connectedness and emotional resilience together. May we continue to build our courage and strength during this unprecedented time in world history by tapping into our wellsprings of faith, love, and sacred community.

If America were merely the sovereign state most resolute in standing up against anti-Semitism both at home and abroad — Dayenu.
If it were merely a matter of gratitude to America for her separation of an official church from the polity of the state — Dayenu!
If it were merely the existence of cultural/ethnic pluralism in this wonderful society — Dayenu!
If America were merely the country of endless potential for personal opportunity and growth — Dayenu!
If America were merely Israel’s greatest friend on the world scene — Dayenu!
If America were merely the country most willing to come to grips, honestly and with integrity, with the implications of the Holocaust — Dayenu!
If America were merely the singular polity that best cultivates a supportive spirit for tzedakah and voluntarism —Dayenu!
If America were merely (please fill in your own “dayenu” — your expression of gratitude to our country).
God bless America.
With civic pride!
Rabbi Alan Silverstein
It’s now more than three-and-a-half centuries since the arrival in 1654 of 23 Jews at the port of New Amsterdam (later New York City). They became the first American Jews; they were permitted to settle permanently and thereby launch what became one of the greatest immigration waves in Jewish history. Robert Rifkind, who chaired the Celebrate 350 anniversary commemoration back in 2004, said, “The entire destiny of the Jews has been forever changed by that migration.” He noted how frightening it is “to consider what would have happened if there had been no migration to America by so many European Jews in the decades before Nazi genocide against our people…and to consider where we would be today — or indeed, whether we or our brethren in the Diaspora or in Israel would exist today in the proud manner that we do — but for the chain of events which we trace back to September 1654.”
Our Passover seder is a fitting occasion to recite a special “dayenu” to number our blessings as American Jews. As Norman Podhoretz did in his My Love Affair with America, I offer here my personal “dayenu”:
If America were merely the nation most philo-Semitic in heritage and culture, that would be sufficient cause to merit our blessing — Dayenu.

As we now turn toward spring and embrace a season of growth, it’s helpful to remember that the world (or perhaps the universe) is so much more vast than we tend to consider it. So many things we take for granted here on Earth — boundaries of identity, time, even physical properties we tend to assume — don’t apply in space. For example, Meir spoke recently about the experiments she’s
conducting in space to better understand combustion. She said, “When you think of it as a scientist, when you remove this ever-present variable of gravity that has always had an influence on any experimental design on Earth, the possibilities are endless.” Her articulation got me thinking about the Divine. The One who transcends all assumptions. I think there is a reason we tend to associate God with the heavens or we use language and metaphors that are other-worldly to understand God — because something God and space have in common is that they both seem to push the limits of our conventional understanding.
If I could ask Jessica Meir one question, it would be about how her experience of space has either reinforced her religious or spiritual identity or challenged it. I wonder if, in some science fiction futuristic scenario, a human colony on Mars will still celebrate Chanukah or Passover or Shabbat. When would they mark it in their calendar? How would it or would it not reflect their experience of the world around them? Would they feel connected to historical events and culture that emerged in the Land of Israel thousands of years ago, as we do today? But until I get answers to these questions, I can come back down to Earth and scrub my refrigerator to get ready for Passover.
From the Pulpit
RABBI ARI LUCAS
In the 1981 film “History of the World: Part I,” Mel Brooks imagined haredi-looking Jews in a Magen David-shaped space shuttle. They were “Jews in space — zooming along protecting the Hebrew race.” It was a joke. But Jessica Meir — a NASA astronaut currently on the International Space Station — is no joke. She’s a bona fide heroine of our day. She is an accomplished biologist, physiologist, and astronaut. She hopes to return to space on a future mission as part of NASA’s Artemis program to become the first woman on the moon and then possibly go on to Mars. If you have the privilege of hearing her speak about her experience, I guarantee you’ll be inspired. Despite her notable accomplishments, she’s humble and is a team player. In an op-ed she coauthored about her experience participating in the first-ever all-female space walk, she wrote:
“The real achievement is the collective acknowledgment that it is no longer okay to move forward without everyone moving together.”
She is also proud of her Jewish heritage. This past December, she took a picture of the Earth from the space station, capturing her feet in the shot sporting a pair of festive Chanukah socks.
As you can tell, I’m a big fan.
Seeing that picture of the Chanukah socks in space got me thinking about how Earthly Judaism is, even as it aspires to connect us with something transcendent. Chanukah celebrates a particular historical moment of a particular people in a particular place. It comes during a season regulated by the rhythms of Earth’s tilt away from the sun — as we’re asked to bring light to the darkest days of the year.

CANTOR JOEL CAPLAN
What’s the Backstory?
1. Nancy and I saw a marvelous exhibit at the Montclair Art Museum — “Impossible Shadows: The Art of Larry Kagan.”
2. Right by our Religious School office hangs a painting, done by former CAI member Cathi Robinson.
You see Jerusalem in the background, and in the foreground is a child planting a tree. Very nice.
Surrounding the image is a quote: “Behold, I am sending an angel ahead of thee to guard thee along the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared for thee.” (Exodus 23:20) Also very nice.
The Backstory: The painting takes on a whole new meaning when you learn about the words down in the corner: “In loving memory of Micaela Kopen.”
Micaela was a lovely, sweet four-year-old in our nursery school. One February day about 15 years ago, she didn’t feel well. It was meningitis. It swept through her little body, and she died within hours.
The painting is beautiful. With the Backstory, the quote takes on a whole new meaning. Read it again.
My point? We all have backstories. That person next to you: Why are they the way they are? So sad? So bubbly?
Learn about them. Find out the backstory. Who knows? Maybe they’re the Mashiach – the long-awaited Messiah.
The poet Danny Siegel wrote: “If you always assume the person sitting next to you is the Messiah, waiting for some simple human kindness, you will soon come to weigh your words and watch your hands.
“And if he so chooses not to reveal himself in your time, it will not matter.”
Wishing you all a Sweet and Meaningful Passover – Cantor Joel Caplan
Mounted on the wall were…well, the pieces looked like junk — a tangle of wires here, another tangle of wires there.
But a spotlight was shining on each tangle, and behind the tangle you saw — a shadow. A shadow that looked nothing like a tangle.
One shadow — behind a tangle — was a portrait of Barack Obama. Clear as could be. One shadow was a leather shoe, with shading, contrast, three-dimensionality. One shadow was a dragonfly.
At first you saw just a jumble, a tangle of wires — but with the light shining on it in just the right way, from exactly the right angle, you got a very clear and unexpected shadow-picture. It was utterly marvelous.

Education Matters
SUSAN WERK, EDUCATION DIRECTOR
The Masters of StorytellingWe Jews are known as masters of storytelling, a trait we got from the gift of the Torah and the rabbis’ instructions regarding the power of “haggadah.” When we hear that word, most of us think of the book we use to conduct our Passover seder. The Hebrew word literally means “the telling,” and in the “Maggid,” or “Telling” part of the Passover Haggadah (note the root shared by Haggadah and Maggid) we are encouraged to share stories even beyond the narrative of the Exodus. We are told, “The more one expands and embellishes the story, the more commendable it is.”
When I spoke to Rabbi Lucas about this topic, he reminded me that the Haggadah includes a reflection on “Arami Oved Avi” — “My ancestor was a wandering Aramean; he descended from Egypt.” Rabbi Lucas and I agreed that this text conveys the message that reflecting on the historical challenges we faced as wanderers or outsiders increases our understanding — and strength — as we confront challenges in the world today. The wisdom of telling family stories, particularly those that illustrate the obstacles our forebears overcame, supports some experts’ approach to encouraging positive development in our children. According to Dr. Marshall P. Duke, “Research shows that children who know a lot about their family tend to be more resilient, [develop] higher levels of self-esteem, more self-control, better family functioning, lower levels of anxiety, and fewer behavioral problems and have better chances for
good outcomes when faced with challenges…. Through family stories, children develop a sense of the multigenerational self and the personal strength and moral guidance that comes with that. When something challenging happens, they can call on that expanded sense of self to pull through.”
Sharing our collective Jewish story and our family chronicles of coming up against challenges, achieving success, or even experiencing failure provides tools of faith, strength, and perseverance for all ages and stages.
Dr. Duke and Dr. Robyn Fivush from Emory University developed the “Do You Know Scale,” also called “The 20 Questions,” which attempts to measure family happiness by linking it to awareness of family stories. Keep in mind that it is not the knowledge of the precise facts that is important — it’s that asking questions and hearing the answers are a way to strengthen a family tradition of sharing the stories of our lives and drawing us together.
I hope these questions help you to begin to learn more of your family stories and share them across the generations.
Passover is a perfect time to add this sharing as a meaningful part to your Seder!
Have a wonderful sweet Passover! Chag kasher v’sameiach!

PASSOVER/PESACH SALE OF HAMETZ
The Biblical injunction is that “no leaven shall be seen or found in your possession during Passover.”
Although it was not easy in earlier days for people to rid their entire household and properties of leaven products, it is somewhat more difficult today. We now buy things in bigger packages, can preserve them longer and tend to keep them for longer periods of time.
IN ORDER NOT to be compelled to dispose of all leaven products in our possession, we have legal provisions for the sale of all of our hametz. We invite every member of the congregation to appoint Rabbi Silverstein to represent them for this transaction. The Rabbi will then “sell” everyone’s hametz to a non-Jew for the duration of Passover. After the holiday, the Rabbi will symbolically buy it back.
THIS FORM MUST BE IN THE RABBI’S POSSESSION BY WEDNESDAY MORNING, APRIL 8, AT 9 AM.
I, _____________________________________________, hereby authorize Rabbi Silverstein as my agent to sell all leaven and hametz in my possession for the duration of Passover.
Address ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Donation $ ___________________________________
While many of you will say this is only legal fiction, this is a fiction, which serves a purpose—to demonstrate, as does every symbolic act, the intention of everyone to observe the laws.
Because of the requirement of disposing of all hametz by Wednesday, April 8, at 9 am, the ritual transaction on the part of the individual must be completed at that time.
Congregation Agudath Israel members may appoint Rabbi Alan Silverstein as their agent in the following manner:
Send in the form below with your donation to the “Rabbi’s Fund” for Passover supplies and to the needy. It is traditional that the money be given to the individual who acts as the agent to arrange this sale.

Sustainable Passover ideas from Hazon.org
1. Host a vegetarian or vegan seder… eat lower on the food chain. Recipes abound!
2. Buy vegetables from your local famer’s market! Early spring crops may be available, including spinach and root vegetables.
3. Use organic kosher grape juice, or organic kosher-for-Passover wine (if you can find it)!
4. Use kosher sustainable meat, for example from Grow & Behold.
5. Use eggs that are certified humane, or certified humane and pasture raised, or animal welfare approved.
6. Grow and use your own parsley! If you didn’t plant it early enough this year, plant some parsley seeds next year on Tu B’Shvat, and it will be ready for your seder plate at Passover time.
7. Make your own horseradish for your seder plate.
8. Use a roasted beet in lieu of a roasted lamb shank on the seder plate.
9. Bake your own matzo with your kids! It only takes 18 minutes!
10. Add color to your seder table: make a new recipe for charoset! There are delicious and interesting recipes from around the world from different cultures.
11. Use non-toxic cleaning products for a sparkling shiny kitchen without noxious chemicals.
12. Invest in Pesach dishware, rather than use disposable dishes every year (or use post-consumer paper or plant-based dishes). Check out the Lenox Outlet Warehouse in Cranbury! It’s dishes heaven…
13. When you clean out your kitchen, get rid not only of the chametz, but also processed foods with sugar and salt that don’t sustain good health.

At Menorah Chapels, we’ve been serving the Jewish community for over forty years... and we will continue to serve with honesty, integrity and dignity for many years to come. We are the only strictly Jewish funeral home in Union County that maintains its own building and are not affiliated with any other funeral home.
