Matching Grant

April 2020 | 5

Greetings, Beth, who was new to the Fox Valley and didn’t have family or friends here, picked up a TCoL newsletter at the library. She read about the many activities and programs that were happening here. Beth came and took a tour. Two years later, Beth comes twice a week and has told us “this is her family.” Joe, who has family and friends in the area, comes to TCoL to do what he loves…play billiards. His wife plays pickle ball and does line dancing. Jean comes three times a week for chair yoga, sheepshead and woodcarving.

All are warmly welcomed and have become part of our TCoL family. Thanks to all of you who have sup-ported us, in so many ways, to make this a vibrant center for those 50 years and older. In just 4 years, we now have grown to over 2500 participants and continue to grow at 30% year on year!

To make 2020 an even better year, Mary Beth Nienhaus, has generously offered to match up to $50,000 in gifts to the TCoL. We are extremely grateful to her and for this opportunity! With everyone’s help, we can raise another $50,000! Every dollar counts! Your donation will help us to grow our wellness, educational and social programs. It truly will be “a place to call family”.

Sincerely, Liz Neuman Mary Beth Nienhaus Executive Director Board Member

P.S. This is a perfect time of year (Mother’s and Father’s Day) to remember your Mother, Father, spouse, family or friend with a gift in their honor or memory. All gifts will be recognized in our newsletter.

1/21/20 ~ Options to Consider When Choosing a Home Tom Cops, Seniors First Remodeling Throughout our lives we seek a place which fits our needs and in which we are comfortable to call home. 20% of American households are now multi-generational and that number is growing. This presentation will look at extended family homes and the changes taking place in our country to facilitate them.

2/18/20 ~ Medicare vs Medicare Advantage Plans Nancy Krause, Independent Insurance Agent Medicare can be confusing and overwhelming to say the least and few are prepared for all the choices they have to make as they turn 65. Not many employers actually prepare their employees for health choices when they are deleted from the group insurance that they enjoyed before they retire. As you near the magic age of 65 you will note how inundated you become with mail, phone calls, TV advertising, etc to the point that you are totally confused. It takes a good agent to find the answers to your most pressing questions and your most relevant needs as they will change every day, every month and every year.

3/17/20 ~ Who Get’s Grandma’s Pie Plate? . . . Karen Dickrell, UW Madison Extension Outagamie County This program is designed to inform and educate the community about the transfer of non-titled personal property. Participants will learn to recognize and understand the sensitivity of transferring personal property, determine what “fair” means to their family, identify the meaning of objects, consider distribution options, and manage conflicts.

TCoL Closure

April 2020 | 19

Due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Potential Health Threat: Effective Monday, March 16, the Thompson Center on Lourdes is closed until further notice. The Thompson Center on Lourdes wants you to know that your health and safety are top of mind. We want to ensure that when you come to the Thompson Center on Lourdes you have a positive experience - whether for a program / activity in wellness, education or social. Due to COVID-19 and the population that we serve we will be suspending activities / programs for an undetermined time. This was a hard decision to make, but your health and safety are our highest priority. We want you to be aware of the basic protective measures you can take related to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak. The World Health Organization (www.who.int) offers the following guidelines: 1. Stay home if you feel sick. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical atten-tion. Stay informed and follow the advice given by your healthcare provider. 2. Wash your hands frequently - for at least 20 seconds. 3. Avoid hugs and handshakes. Use alternate ways of greeting people. Avoid close contact. 4. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. 5. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately. 6. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early. 7. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. 8. Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures. 9. Stay informed. Your health is important to us - you're our family. We will post updates to the TCoL website (www.thetcol.org) and Facebook page.

Stay healthy and be good to yourself!

Recent plans to move some of our activities to Sacred Heart Parish Gymnasium have been postponed. As developments are finalized we will keep you informed, but it is anticipated that changes will not be made before January 2021.

Improvements are being done while TCoL is closed. We are excited to share these changes with you when we reopen.

By now you should have received your official census form.

The invitation mailings were addressed to “Resident” at the household address and do not include an individual’s name. Households in areas

of the country that are less likely to respond via the internet will also receive a paper questionnaire in their first mailing, along with information on how to respond online. All nonresponding households will receive a paper questionnaire after two more reminder mailings.

Responding to the 2020 Census is easy, safe and important, and it’s key to shaping the fu-ture of your community. The 2020 Census will determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives, and influences how hundreds of billions of dol-lars in public funds are allocated for critical public services like emergency response, schools, hospitals, roads and bridges over the next 10 years.

TCoL is part of the Census Partnership Team and is prepared to assist you with completing the census. Starting in April through May, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 11:00am - 1:00pm a staff member will be available to assist our participants. Appointments are preferred - please call (920) 939-3088 to make an appointment.

As always, be aware of scams. The Census Bureau will never ask you for: · Your Social Security number. · Money or donations. · Anything on behalf of a political party. · Your bank or credit card account numbers.
