ACPS School Council presents to you:

Patricia Marra-Stapleton

Leading Mental Health Lead of YRDSB

on Tuesday, April 16 @ 7 pm. at Adrienne Clarkson P.S.

Topic: You Can’t Give What You Don’t Have: How to Take Care of

Ourselves, so in turn We Can Take Care of Others

Limited childcare available for school aged children.

Register for the event by April 10 online

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER

WET AND DRY CLOTHES

Spring has arrived! We can expect a lot of puddles in our

yard as all the snow melts. Please make sure your child has

a change of clothes should he/she become wet playing

outside. This will save your child from being

uncomfortable and the need to make a call home for a

change of clothes. Please make sure your child also has

outdoor and indoor shoes.

We ask that parents be sensitive to the demands placed on

the office and not call the school to inquire about indoor

recess, but send their children dressed for outdoor play.

Often the decision is made just prior to the recess as we

observe changing conditions.

DRESS CODE

When the warmer weather approaching,

we would like to remind parents and students of the school

dress code. To maintain a positive school atmosphere, we

ask that students refrain from wearing clothing that

displays inappropriate language or pictures. We also ask

that students dress in a manner that does not expose

undergarments, navels or midriffs.

In the warmer weather, footwear should allow students to

participate in all school activities safely.

ARE YOU MOVING??

If you will be moving out the ACPS area by September 2019, please let us know as soon as possible. We are currently projecting our student enrolment for September 2019. These numbers help us hire sufficient staff and support personnel. It is important that we know as soon as possible if your child will not be attending Adrienne Clarkson P.S. in September. Thanks for your assistance in preparing for the next school year. Please call our office with any information: 905-709-3554.

DANCE A THON— FUNDRAISER

We are excited to announce that on Monday, April 8, 2019 students at Adrienne Clarkson will be participating in a DANCE-A-THON fundraiser! Students are encouraged to wear their favourite colour! The Dance-a-thon will be in the Gym. Bounce will provide the disc jockeying services. Every student in the school will have an opportunity to participate in this fun and energetic event.

All our students and their families are encouraged to pledge for this worthwhile fundraising activity. We will be tracking the pledges/donations for each class and the TOP 3 classes will receive a FREE ICE

CREAM PARTY! (Alternate options for dietary restrictions will be considered.) To participate in this fundraising initiative, please login to your

child’s school cash online account.

Thank you to all our participating families. We value your support of our dance-a-thon day! Adrienne Clarkson School Council

SCHOOL ASSISTANTS NEEDED

School Assistants play an important role in

providing a safe and comfortable environment

for students during the lunch hour. This is a

paid position, requiring you to be at the school

from 11:55 am—12:55 pm. If you are interested in applying for

this position, either on a full-time or occasional basis, please

contact Ruth Walker-Rosewood, Vice Principal.

Family Math Focus

Games

Using games to support your child at home to reinforce math concepts they are learning in class can be fun for the whole family! Games provide children with opportunities to explore mathematical concepts such as number concepts, patterns and relationships. It also allows them to use models and strategies they are familiar with (e.g., arrays, ten frames, skip counting). Some math games are commercially available, but most can be played with common household objects. In fact, most games that are not considered “math” games have many math concepts already in them. Try highlighting some of those concepts as you are playing.

Important Testing Dates

Friday, May 3 PCAP Assessment for Grade 8/Motomura

EQAO

May 21—22 Grade 3 Math EQAO

May 27 to May 30 Grade 6 Literacy and Math EQAO

In late May of each year, the grade 3 and 6 students participate in the province-wide EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability

Office) testing. The assessment of all students in grade 3 and 6 programs provides quality information to educators, students and

parents on the achievement of students in the areas of Mathematics (grades 3 and 6) and English Language (grade 6 only). This

assessment provides important additional information for improving student learning and supporting school improvement initia-

tives. Additional information about the grade 3 and 6 EQAO tests is available through the EQAO web site at www.eqao.com

We ask that students be present at school during the testing period. We thank you for your cooperation in refraining

from booking appointments during the school day. Thank you.

A WORD ON PARKING & TRAFFIC SAFETY

Please note that cars are not permitted to drive through, stop or park in the bus loop at any time. The

loop is for buses only. Parking in the bus loop is strictly prohibited at any time of the day.

If you drive your children to school in the morning or pick them up at the end of the day, we request that you

use the “drop off/pick up" area located on the east side of the school. Please note that you may not park

here for any length of time and please turn your engines off while waiting. If you need to park, our limited

“VISITOR” parking is available in the back row of the parking lot.

We take the safety of our students seriously and ask that parents follow the rules of the road and drive slowly.

Please do not hurry and take the time to look out for our students walking to school. With the arrival of winter

weather, we ask that drivers are extra cautious when dropping your child off at school.

SAVE THE DATE!

With thoughts of warmer weather, plans are in the works for our annual BBQ

Bonanza being held on Monday, June 17th from 5pm-8pm. We are looking

forward to an afternoon full of fun, laughter, dancing, good food and lots of prizes!

What to do next?

In early May look for online orders in your child’s School Cash Online Cart for food, prize tickets and more.

Want to help?

We can't be successful without the great and numerous volunteers that have always helped and would love to

hear from you if you are able to help this year.

The committee is also looking for your help to create an amazing prize table for this year’s event. Here are

some examples of how you can help: electronics, artwork, artisan jewellery, gift baskets, gift cards, tickets to

sporting or other events, sports and entertainment memorabilia, classes or lessons (art, dance, music) or prod-

ucts/services from your company.

If you have anything to donate or you would like to volunteer for this wonderful community event, please con-

tact Dana Turculet @ [email protected] or drop your donation off at the school office.

BBQ COMMITTEE

Thank you to the School Council and Community for sponsoring the recent perfor-

mance for the Grade 2 and 3, Les trois petits cochons performance by Dufflebag Thea-

tre. The students and teachers really enjoyed the entertaining fairy tale and being part

of the play.

2019-2020 CLASS PLACEMENTS

In the upcoming months, our teaching staff will begin organizing classes for September 2019. A great deal of time, consider-ation and staff collaboration goes into placing students in balanced and positive learning environments. Classes at each grade level are formed using a variety of important criteria such as: · Class size consistent with Board and Ministry guidelines;

· Gender balance in each class;

· A range of performance levels within each class, taking into account the skills, knowledge, attitudes and work habits of individual students;

· Promoting positive social relationships while minimizing unproductive associations.

Please note that combined grade classes (split classes) may be part of our organization for the upcoming school year.

The staff at Adrienne Clarkson PS has a very strong understanding of our students and is extremely caring and pro-fessional about the class placement process. As parents and guardians, if you do feel there are considerations about your child’s learning style or peer associations that are important to be taken into consideration, please send your information to the Principal, Nadia Russiello by May 17th.

Please note that requests for specific teachers will not be accepted. If you do include the name of a specific teach-er, your request will be returned to you. As always, we appreciate your understanding as we work together for the benefit of all our students.
