Those Eyes

April 2018

I will never forget the ex-pression on her face. I wish I could find a way to de-scribe it. It’s been thirty some odd years now, and I can still see her eyes just as plain as if it was yester-day. Black as onyx, filled with young life and yet haunted somehow. Unfor-gettable, that’s for sure. In all my life, I don’t think I have ever seen anything as lovely or as awful as those eyes. They filled me with hope and dread at the same time. Now how do you do that?

She was staring off into space with that newborn on her lap. She looked like she knew something that no one else did. Yeah, I know all new mamas look kinda like that, but there was something else; something that gave her a wonderfully secretive smile; and Lord have mercy did that smile set off the tears in her eyes. Never has there been nor ever will there be any-thing more beautiful or more tragic than those eyes. I will never forget

them. They’ve haunted me for over thirty years now.

Oh, I’ve kept up the best I could over the years. I mean it ain’t everyday a bunch of angels tell you where to go. That kind of thing sticks in your mind, you know. Not to mention seeing the

baby, but it was those eyes, those eyes that cap-tured me somehow.

I remember praying for that little girl as I headed home that evening; praying that she could find some peace somewhere, find some-thing to take that terrible sorrow from her eyes.

I understand her boy has gotten Himself in some trouble as of late; started speaking the truth. Young’uns, they’ll do that sometimes. It takes a bit of livin’ to understand that the truth makes folks uncom-fortable. Heck, it makes ‘em mad. It threatens ‘em more often than not, espe-cially a truth like His; but He was sent to tell them, so tell them He did.

I’m just glad I wasn’t there to witness the kangaroo court and the beatings. Just watching them raise up that middle cross and drop it into place from a distance was enough to tear me up. The sound of that cross dropping carried all across the city. It rang

Our Star Members for April are — Eunice Durst Saluda Nursing Center Raleigh Unit, Room 320 581 Newberry Highway Saluda, SC 29138-7808

Each month we name one or more of our members as our Star Member. A star member is anyone over 65, a nursing home member or a home bound member. These are our special members who need our care and concern. Greeting cards or note cards are a great way to stay in touch when we can’t visit or call.

out like an angry clap of thun-der. It broke my heart, as old as I am. Even the sheep fell silent around me.

It rained all that day and on into the evening. About sunset things calmed down a little and by nightfall all was quiet; all but my mind, that is.

I couldn’t sleep to save my soul that night. Every time I lay down, my mind would return to those haunted eyes from years before. Only now the smile had faded, and the tears of sorrow and pain were all that lingered.

It’s been three days now since they pulled Him off that cross, and I slept pretty good last night. I just got up once or twice. I can tell you this though; I do believe I saw the prettiest sun-rise I have ever seen this morn-ing; not a cloud in the sky. I hope His mama was up early enough to see it.

Have a blessed Easter.

Love, Pastor Tony

To the Sunshine Club — I believe this is the first time I have ever received flowers in

my 74 years that God has blessed me with. Your thoughtfulness is much appreciated and the colorful flowers brightened many of my days while recuperating after surgery. Thank you! — Bob Walters

To all the congregation of Beulah — We appreciated all of your prayers, beautiful cards and food. The smiles you brought to our hearts, every wise word of encourage-ment you shared, every time you’ve been there for us when we needed you most...makes us even more grateful for the gifts of your friendships in our lives. — Violet Myers and Family

Report from the Planning and Building Committee The Planning and Building Committee has authorized the preparation of drawings and specifications by 4D Engineering for site work at our highway 378 property. Phase 1 Site work consists of pre-paring the land for proper drainage, construction of a water detention pond, underground drain pip-ing, parking areas, the building pad for the proposed Fellowship Hall, and a water tap and fire hy-drant. Drawings were prepared and submitted to Lexington County, the SC Department of Trans-portation, and the SC Department of Health and Environment Control. The SCDOT required a change to the driveway connection to highway 378 and the revised plans have been resubmitted to SCDOT for final approval. Bid packages were sent to multiple site work contractors and two bids were received by 4D Engi-neering. However, the bids are to be revised according to the changes SCDOT required. As soon as the revised bids are received, the Planning and Building Committee will meet and review the plans, specifications, and bids with the intent of immediately signing a contract with the successful bidder. It is the hope of the committee that work will begin shortly after. The project architect has also been directed to prepare drawings and specifications so that the committee may receive one or more budget figures for the construction of the Fellowship Hall building. The intent is to use the budget figures as a guide for determining a fund raising goal. Once that goal is determined, the Planning and Building Committee will meet with the Finance Com-mittee and the Fund Raising Committee to determine a path forward. The completion of underground utilities for the Fellowship Hall and the actual construction of the Fellowship Hall building, driveway paving, and parking lot paving are to be done as Phase 2 of this project. Future Phase 3 will be for all the work required to build the remaining buildings. Expect updated written and verbal reports as we proceed with this project.

The Mission Statement and Vision Statement Adopted by the Beulah Methodist Church Council

As part of the work of the Strategic Planning Committee, the task of updating our mis-sion statement and vision statement was completed. During the meeting of our Church Council on Sunday, April 18th, the following statements were submitted and approved unanimously. Mission Statement: Bringing scripture, mission, and fellowship to life. Vision Statement: Through prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, together we believe, live, stand by, and share the truths contained in the Holy Scriptures as historically interpreted so that God is glorified. As the body of Christ, we love others by building a sense of community that welcomes, serves, and nurtures all people, drawing them into a closer relationship with God in order to grow His kingdom.

Highlights from March 18 Council Meeting

Pastor opened meeting with prayer with 17 members in attendance.

Karen Counts,IT Committee, told the council the network wireless access

points have been placed in various locations. Some work is left to do

such as source element will be redirected. TVs in various locations will

be wireless. Services can be seen from TVs located in both buildings.

Guests password is “CometoChurch”. The old equipment will be sold in the

next yard sale.

Pastor Tony said everything is doing well. The Youth is being managed by

Pastor until new Youth Director is hired. Tony asked for prayers for the

upcoming 2018 Annual Conference.

Karolyn Grimm & Carey Smith with the Strategic Planning Committee present-

ed the Vision and Mission Statement. Goals will follow the Mission and

Vision Statements. The Mission Statement will be printed in Sunday bulle-

tins and monthly newsletters so members can become very familiar with it.

(See page 9).

Derinda Ulmen, SPRC Committee, said we have begun our search for a Chris-

tian Education Director. We have applied for a Grant with the United Meth-

odist Church to cover part salary or full salary for this position for up

to two years. Hopefully the position can be filled by an ordained dea-

con. After the salary amount is decided, the matter will be turned over to

the Finance Committee.

Carey Smith, Chairman of the Building Committee, said we are getting clos-

er to begin the site work for the first building. SCDOT changed the number

of driveways allowed from three to two. Original drawings sent to four

contractors have to be revised.

Our Pre-School Director Cara Lawhorne reported that the Preschool children

will be visiting Fox’s Farms, The ongoing fundraiser called the “Lunch

Bunch” has raised money for a new phonics program for the children. Also

a coin drive has raised enough money to purchase new playground equipment

for the younger students. We have 28 new students for next year regis-

tered and a summer program is planned including a “Science Camp.”

The Council approved a requirement that all budgeted funds $3,000 or more

must be approved by council. Only the Trustee Committee is exempted from

this rule.

Pot luck lunch will only be held on the months we have Council meetings.

The fifth Sunday breakfasts will continue.

The Fix-Up Committee will research new chairs to replace the old ones. The

Easter Joy

Jesus came to earth,

To show us how to live,

How to put others first,

How to love and how to give.

Then He set about His work,

That God sent Him to do;

He took our punishment on Himself;

He made us clean and new.

He could have saved Himself,

Calling angels from above,

But He chose to pay our price for sin;

He paid it out of love.

Our Lord died on Good Friday,

But the cross did not destroy

His resurrection on Easter morn

That fills our hearts with joy.

Now we know our earthly death,

Like His, is just a rest.

We'll be forever with Him

In heaven, where life is best.

So we live our lives for Jesus,

Think of Him in all we do.

Thank you Savior; Thank you Lord.

Help us love like you!
