President’s Piece

Another great afternoon together sharing expertise and viewing the

wonderful work our Members do. It is fantastic to look out and see

the Hall packed tight with enthusiasts. If you know someone who

hasn’t been for a while share some of our Speakers with them and

endeavour to entice them back into the fold so they don’t miss out.

The enthusiasm shown for the Block of the Month this year is really

exciting and wonderful Quilts are being made as a result. Thank you

to all those taking part and of course there is always room for heaps

more.

We were all blown away as we shared Sheryl’s quilting journey an

amazing quilter with so much talent. If you have any ideas for

Speakers please let us know. We try to get a variety of folk and your

input is valued.

Sit n stitch on the 4th Saturday at St Andrews is a smaller gathering

where you can really get to know others in a lovely atmosphere of

stitching, talking, laughing and sharing. Give it a go. If it hadn’t been

for these days I’m not sure I would have become so involved.

As you will see in this Newsletter there are some wonderful

opportunities to really enjoy our quilting together--- make the most

of these, especially classes and trips they are magnificent. Our next

meeting is a Work day so bring your machine, hand sewing and

laughter and join in a great day. Be aware of the change of date.

Happy stitching everyone

Next Meeting – 19 May 2018 Workday

The next Coastal Quilters meeting will the third Saturday because the Tote and

Gloat bus trip will be on the 12 May 2018. There will be no library at the

workday but there will be books that have been retired from the library for sale.

Our work day is going to be a busy one this month, Milton Wright will be with us

as well as Dianna Carroll is selling some of her material for $5.00 a half metre

(good deal).

Also, Lou McDonald will also be with us for some part of the day selling material

that has been donated to Mary Potter Hospice. So, come along and see what

materials maybe you, just can’t do without. Although we wont have our usual

club raffle, there will be Coast to Coast raffles.

Up-coming classes

FULL - Crazy Quilt As You Go – Sarah Hooker – 17 June – There is a waiting list in case of cancellations.

This is a great class to dive into your scrap bag

for a scrappy quilt or you can choose a range of

selected fabrics or collections. Your chosen

fabrics are pieced into square or hexagon panels which is padded

and backed.

This class will be at Plimmerton School starting at 9.30 am.

The course cost for members is $35 and non-members is $50. Please

include your name and what class you are paying for when doing

internet banking.

Almost FULL - Charmed Bag – Dianne Barnden – Sunday 19

August. 9.30am Plimmerton School.

This is an ideal project to show off charms squares that are just too

gorgeous to cut up, team them with your favourite fabric and you

have a wonderful bag to carry all your bits around in. Add an

embellishment that reflects your personality and you will be the envy

of your friends. So why not make them all one too!

The course cost for members is $35 and non-members is $50. Please

include your name and what class you are paying for when doing

internet banking.

30th Anniversary Year! This year Coastal Quilters is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The main thing that we have planned is

to have a celebration day at our October work day. More details and itinerary for the day are to

come. We will have a 12"x12" challenge (see below), a shared lunch, an afternoon tea and a few

other things (don’t want to give it all away!). So, if you haven’t set aside the October workday in your

calendars yet, maybe make and note and plan to be there.

Meeting

Checklist:

Main project to

work on.

Side project for

when you finish or

get sick of your main

project.

Mug for a cup of tea.

Lunch.

Pocket full of money

for fabric, Coast-to-

Coast raffles, second

hand library books.

Challenges for 30th Anniversary

As part of our 30th Anniversary year (for more details see above). We are holding three challenges.

They will be handed in and shown at our October work day where they will be displayed and there

will be a people’s choice vote and prize’s in all three categories. You can do one, two or all three of

the different categories.

The details:

• The three categories are: “Coastal”, “30” and “My first quilt”

• The size of the work must be 12"x12".

• It must be three layers.

• For hanging there will have to be a hanging sleeve (3 ½ inches finished, ie cut 8 inches, fold in half and sew on with a ¼ inch seam).

Save your scraps!

The scrap tub was a success at the last meeting. Keep on bringing in the little bits of things that

would otherwise go in the bin. This may be a good source of fabrics for this months “Block of the

Month”. Also remember to check the bin and take what you need out of it.

Join the committee

To keep running the club needs a committee and the committee needs you. You don’t need to have

been in the club for a long time. People have joined the committee in the first year of joining the

club. If you have been on the committee before there is nothing to stop you from coming back on.

There are a variety of different tasks and responsibilities to suit you. There are great advantages

including: reduced fees, early knowledge of what is happening and new acquisitions, get to see the

magic behind the curtain and you get to work with a great group of people.

Sharon Ferguson (Chief Tea Lady), Linda Wakefield, Christine Blitz, (Library), Marge Hurst and

Christine McKenna (Welcome quilts), Lesley Hall (Greeter, Mini-retreat, Sit ‘N’ Stitch), Alz and Janine

Armstrong (Frames & photos), Rachel-Mary Perry (Almoner)

Valued workers: Thank you!

Neonatal Quilts Wellington Area neonatal units are getting low on quilts for premature or ill newborn babies. If you

are looking for a small charity project perhaps consider making a quilt for the neonatal unit. There

are some exact requirements for these quilts. They must be no bigger than 27”x27”. The batting

must be cotton. There cannot be any buttons or bits that could easily come off.

Block of the Month

You are all amazing for having a go at the Blocks of the Month! Thank you so much for your support

and response!

The Split 9-Patch blocks were given to Verena Coleman and

Florence Hodder whose names were drawn. Both these ladies are

graciously piecing together the blocks and donating the tops to

Welcome Quilts. Thank you ladies! The next BOM for you to try is Stripes and Scraps. It's another fairly

easy block where you can use up some of your scraps. And you

have two months to do it in, so why not do one for each month!

Some of us don't have a lot of Stripey fabric, so a suggestion is to

bring some along to Sit 'n Stitch and the Work Day in May to swap/share. You could also use our

Yahoo groups to advertise if you have spare or are in need.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Thank you again!

Alison Spurdle

Shop Hop and Bus Trip Save the date, and your pennies, Shop Hop Bus Trip will be 4th August. The specifics of the cost, the

times and the places we will be going is still being worked out. It is likely to follow the same sort of

line as last year. For anyway new to the club, or haven’t been on the bus trip before, what happens

is that we hire a bus and go around a number of quilting shops in one day. There is lots of fun

activities and it is a great time. We do the bus trip to coincide with a Shop Hop event. A shop hop is

an event where you can sign up and pay for a “passport” to do a quilt. Then you have to visit all of

the participating quilt shops in the designated time to pick up all of your packs to make the quilt you

chose. This year there are going to be nine participating quilt shops. More information to come.

Triangle Party Class Review There was quite a demand for Shelia’s class as

many of us wanted to learn her technique of

complicated triangle piecing with no y-seams. A

few came along to make some blocks for

cushions or a table runner but by the end of the

class were well on their way to making a quilt, a

smaller project long forgotten. A number of new

blocks were invented and Shelia showed us some

of her ways she designs her blocks.

Sheila also brought along a few items from her shop, quilters Lane and a number of us took this

opportunity. The class had a good hum all day, yes some reverse sewing but a lot of eureka

moments. Most of us went home with 4-5 blocks finished but with a happy smile on our faces.

A must-do class in my book even for the beginner. Sheila is a natural teacher and a talented

designer. Thank you Daphne for the organising of this class and the outstanding sultana cake that

energised us. It was a lovely collection of quilters who brought a variety of different fabrics to make

the pattern unique

Mini-retreat

The next mini retreat is coming soon - 22 and 23 June at St. Andrews Church

Hall, Steyne Ave, Plimmerton. The retreat starts at 10am on Friday and ends

after dinner on Saturday evening. You go home to your own bed on Friday

night around 8.30/9pm and come back on Saturday morning any time after

8.30am ready for another day of sewing.

Bring along hand or machine sewing or both. You can bring your own sewing

table or use the ones at the hall. It is a great time to get out those projects

that need finishing. Remember this is an opportunity to work on your ‘mini’

projects, rather than that king size quilt. Mini-retreat is lots of fun with loads

of inspiration and encouragement. This is a good way to get to know other

club members while making progress on your project/s

Catering for the weekend is shared - bring a plate for a shared dinner on

Friday night and a plate for either morning or afternoon tea on Saturday. We do takeaways (or

sometimes leftovers) on Saturday evening – there are 4 local options in the area to choose from.

Come for both days ($20) or just one ($15). Fill out the registration form sent with the newsletter

and make payment to the Club’s bank account (number on the registration form or see page 10 of

the newsletter).

Any enquires to Lesley Hall [email protected], phone 233 8194.

September Retreat

This is advance warning of the September retreat at the end of

the year. The dates will be 21-23 September 2018. Retreats are a

great way to get to know fellow club members and to have some

concentrated sewing time. Thimble and Threads is also just down

the road for any emergency sewing supply. If you need help or

advice there are lots of different people to call on that are happy

to help out. The March retreat was great fun, come along to the

September one if you are able. If you are unable to attend this

one, the dates for next year are 29-31 March 2019 and 30 August

-1 September 2019. The 2020 dates have also been booked and will be 1-3 May 2020 and 28-30

August 2020.

Rimu Court at Silverstream Retreat is a great facility with

good lighting, hotel-style bathrooms, and delicious meals.

There's also a huge table quilts can be pinned on. The

accommodation is shared bunk style rooms - we only use the

bottom bunks. A short stroll across the carpark gets you to

the dining room. You can either live-in for the weekend

(Friday from 2pm to Sunday 3pm) or just come for the

Saturday, (~ 9am to after dinner).

The price and cost for the retreat will be finalised closer to the date.

Exhibition

Cre8: diversity

Odlin Gallery, Myrtle St, Lower Hutt

11 – 22 July 2018: 10am - 4 pm

Open Day /Meet the Artists: Sunday 15 July 10am – 4 pm

Established in 2012, Cre8 is a group of 6 textile artists who share a common interest in expanding their

artistic horizons. Margaret Davidson and Gayel Downes come from Upper Hutt, Karen Johnston and

Brenda McPartlin are Horowhenua residents and Pam Lorimer lives in Carterton. Rebecca Staunton

lives in Brisbane, keeps in touch by email and comes across the Tasman once or twice a year.

Collectively, the group have many years’ experience as traditional stitchers and/or quilters.

Cre8 artists work with paper, silk, cotton, wool, linen, thread and wire. A feature of the exhibition will

be the joint project entitled ‘8 Days’. Previous joint projects have included upcycled linen tea towels,

reconstructed wool lamb jackets, wire dresses and fabric manipulation. Cre8 was the featured group

in the June 2016 edition of Australian ‘Embellish’ magazine.

This is the third time Cre8 have exhibited at the Odlin Gallery and the title ‘diversity’ reflects the current

range of work of the six artists.

Everyone is welcome. Entry to the Gallery is free. Work will be for sale.

Shut-in Stitches Volunteers needed

The Shut-in Stitches is a programme that has been running for 24 years teaching quilting (Saturday mornings), to two different groups of women at Arohata Woman's prison (Tawa).

The volunteers in the programme happily share their passion for quilting and are proud of the achievements made by the members of the classes.

“It is very rewarding to see the prisoners' enthusiasm for sewing, and they are so proud of their completed quilts”.

One class runs in the Drug Treatment Unit (20 participants) and the other group is run in Mainstream (8 participants).

We are looking for new tutors to join the group. Time commitments vary depending on the tutor’s own wishes but each session is approximately 3-1/2 hours.

Please contact either: Linda Kemp 0272888780 Capital Quilters or Tricia DuBern 0275888825 Wellington Quilters / Pinestream Quilters if you would like more information

Coast to Coast

July 21st 2018 9 am – 4 pm

Kapiti Coast Community Church

57 Hinemoa Street, Paraparaumu Things are progressing very well with the planning of Coast to Coast. We now have our raffle tickets

and Coast to Coast tickets for sale at each meeting and some posters to put around the community.

Tickets for Coast to Coast will available for sale at each meeting and will

also be available at Aimee’s Fabrics Village Books and Crafts, Busy Bee

quilt shop and Fibre Flair. You can also send a self-stamp addressed

envelope to Kapiti Quilters P O Box 286 Waikanae and a ticket will be sent

back to you. Payment can be by internet banking or cheque. We would

you prefer you didn’t send money by mail. Tickets are $15.00 each.

If you pay by internet remember we are using Kapiti Quilters B/A and

their number is:

01-1167-0013764-00

Raffle tickets will be available at upcoming meetings and are $2.00 each.

We went to Wellington Guild on Thursday evening and sold our last lot of

challenge fabrics. The response to the challenge fabric has been great and we look forward to seeing

some wonderful ideas put in the form of a quilt from all guilds around the Wellington, Kapiti and

Hutt Valley areas.

Coastal Quilters and Kapiti Quilters Challenge Quilts are due back at the July meeting which I will

collect at upcoming meetings.

Pinestream Quilters, Capital Quilters and Wellington Quilters will need to return their challenge

quilts at the June meeting which I will collect at your June meetings.

Please remember to put your phone number on the back of the quilt. When you hand over your

quilt, we will take your name and you will be given a number to claim your quilt back and the other

number will stay with your quilt. Also remember the Velcro strip on the back, so we can hang your

quilt at Coast to Coast.

If your challenge quilt needs special care, please let me know and we will take care of it.

I will be putting some lists out asking for volunteers to help on the day at Coast to Coast and at

ongoing meetings.

Apart from our raffle quilt we are also having two raffle baskets, one filled with fat quarters and

another filled with luxury items. If members could assist us with donations that would be great.

Thanks everyone

Anne-Marie

Welcome Quilts We seem to be getting requests for more quilts than we did in early 2017 and in 2016, so would appreciate any help you can give to keep a good supply of quilts on hand. Thanks in Advance. We will have a Welcome Quilts Stitch Day at St Andrew’s in Plimmerton on the 30th of June so please put this date in your diaries. This is a great time for us to pin up quilts in preparation to quilt and some members bring their machines and do some quilting. If you have some tops you would like to quilt for us we can cut you some batting for them. Thanks to all for the help you have given over the years. Marge and Christine

Informal Stitching Groups Stitch days in Pukerua Bay

Stitch Day at Marge Hurst’s house is temporarily suspended until further notice. Some repairs are

being done and things are in some chaos as storage is being replaced and stuff is sitting on most

horizontal surfaces with very little seating left. If someone else would like to host the Stitch Day for a

few months it would be much appreciated. But if not, then an announcement will be made when

repairs are completed.

Sit ‘N’ Stitch – 28 April 2018

New to the club? Consider coming along to Sit ‘N’ Stitch. It is a

great way to meet the people in the club on a one-to-one level.

As the name suggest, you bring along something to work on.

Hand-stitching, machine work, knitting, embroidery, anything.

We have a morning and afternoon tea break with tea and

coffee provided. You can either bring your lunch or there are a

number of cafes around where you can buy your lunch. It is

usually held on the fourth Saturday of the month (unless there

is a mini-retreat). It is from 10am-4pm at St Andrew's Church

Hall, Plimmerton. It is also a good opportunity to use the

resources of the Lightbox and the Sizzix machine.

Tea and coffee are provided; a shared plate for afternoon tea is appreciated.
