Preparing for the Harvest
Several years ago, Beth and I purchased and planted some apple trees. It was an easy
decision to make. We only had to decide what kinds of apples we wanted, what size trees
we wanted, and where to plant them. We ordered the trees, dug the holes, and planted the
trees. Now we wait for the fruit. Simple. Commercial apple growers face a much greater
challenge. In addition to picking the best trees for their growing zone and soil, they also
have to consider the market. What kinds of apples will people want to eat seven to thirty
years from now? It takes years for a tree to mature enough to bear fruit, and once mature, it
can bear fruit for decades. These days, gala, honeycrisp and granny smith apples seem
pretty popular, but will people still want them in fifteen years? Poor choices now by the
grower can make for difficult and lean times down the road.
The time frames may be shorter, but the difficulty of choice can be similar for farmers
who raise other crops and animals. Will beef cattle or dairy cattle yield a better income for
the farm? Is the market for soybeans or corn likely to be stronger this year? Choosing
poorly can make for a poor farmer.
Though most of us do not grow food in order to sell it, in a spiritual sense we all face
profound questions about what crops we will grow. Consider these words of the Apostle
Paul:
Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you
will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So
let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then,
whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of
faith. (Galatians 6:7-10)
Day by day, do we sow to our flesh? Do we choose again and again to do what pleases
our fallen human nature? If so, what we harvest will be corruption. That is what sowing to
the flesh yields, just as sowing wheat leads to a harvest of wheat. On the other hand, do we
sow to the Spirit? Day by day, do we choose to do what is right, to obey God? Do we serve
others and do good when God presents to us the opportunities? Then we will reap eternal
life at harvest time.
The time for spring planting will soon be here in our York County neighborhoods.
Perhaps you will pass a field where a farmer is planting corn or soybeans. Or you might
pass Flinchbaugh’s Orchard and see their varieties of apple trees. Let the business of
agriculture in the springtime remind you of the very serious business in which we are
engaged as Christians. Will we sow in such a way as to honor God with our words and
actions, and so reap eternal life from the Spirit, or will we sow to the flesh and reap
corruption. May you have a blessed April, and may you sow well!
Peace,
Pastor Jason
