Do you know Unaffiliated Jews in Chester County, Montgomery County

and Delaware County?

Celebrate with an Oneg

Do you have Jewish friends or acquaintances who live in Chester County, Montgomery County and Delaware County who are not already members of a synagogue? If you do, why not invite them to one of the upcoming events at Or Shalom, for example our next Friday night dinner? They may have a good time and decide to come back. They may have such a good time that they decide to become members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county. We’d love to contact them, but don’t know who they are. You can help. Todah rabah!

The President’s Column

Do we have a complete list of

your Yahrzeits? We send out a reminder letter each month. If

you don’t get one, we don’t have your Yahrzeit records up to date. Email the office with the name,

relationship to member, and civil date

including year and we will add it to our records.

Dear Congregants, While we usually have a

minyan during Sabbath services, there are times we miss.

It is especially disheartening when we miss and someone is

here to say kaddish. If you intend to

celebrate a Yahrzeit, please inform Rabbi Jacob and he will make telephone calls to ensure there. It would also be helpful if

you could bring members of your family or friends.

Thank you

Rabbi Jacob

President’s Message – April 2017

Well I came back from sunny Florida just in time for our annual fundraiser, The Or Shalom Art Auction. It was great fun as I got to see many of our Or Shalom family and meet some of their guests. There was a wonderful feeling of community among all the attendees and we made some money for the shul. Thank you to all that came to support the event. I particularly want to thank the people that worked so hard to make it a great successful evening, Betsy Cohen, Mindy Markovitz, Audree Burg and Na’ama Yarden. Please see the article in this Horizons. This could not have happened without their great organizational skills and get it done attitude. It is my hope that this event will be a springboard for you all to attend more great events and services. Coming up of course is Passover and our seder on the second night, April 11. Please come and make this a community event. (Reservations required) I also came back just in time for the Hebrew School Shabbat on March 25th. It was great to see a full shul and the children participating in the services. Our combined Hebrew school with CBENT is working well and our children are benefitting from being with a larger group of Jewish children. I wish you all a Zissen Pesach.

Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner

The ma nishtana that we recite during our seder can be applied to the seder itself. Every seder ought to be a new and different experience, so each of us might ask why is this seder different from all the seders I have experienced? Perhaps there is something new in your life? Perhaps a new child, grandchild or friend is joining your seder for the first time. Or perhaps sadly there is someone missing, a loved one who this year is joining the great seder in olam haba. There is an empty chair at your table and the haggada tales you tell include sad memories. There is a midrash in the name of Rabbis Yehoshu’a and Eli’ezer: “They were redeemed in the month of Nisan, and they will be redeemed in the month of Nisan” (12:42). The Hasidic Rebbe Menahem Nahum of Chernobyl, (from the end of the 18th Century) sug-gests that obviously the past redemption of Nissan refers to the exodus from Egypt, but the future Nissan redemption does not necessarily refer to the messiah or to some great political event that will redeem the world. Instead it can refer to a more personal redemption. The word mitzrayim (Egypt) can be defined as “the narrow spaces” in our lives. Some-times we feel trapped. Sometimes we feel as if the walls are closing in on us. Perhaps an illness in the family, or an issue with our jobs or our children puts us in a place where we may yearn for personal redemption. In the haggadah we read that every Jew of every generation should see him/herself as is s/he had personally been redeemed from Egypt. Perhaps the haggada is teaching us that during our seder, we are obligated to see ourselves as escaping our own personal mitzrayim. May this month of Nissan and this Passover redeem us from out personal mitzrayim. may it comfort our sorrows, heal our illnesses and bring us joy and meaning amen.

Choose Your Haggadah Carefully Most of us spend lavishly when we make our Seder. The food is plentiful, the wine flows freely, the table is set beautifully. Yet, when we open the Haggadah, that tells the Passover story, more than likely we have before us a worn, tattered, wine-stained book that cost a quarter when it was purchased in the 1950's and has pages missing. (here is a hint - Maxwell House makes a heavenly coffee, and Manischewitz makes an okay gefilte fish [real gefilte fish is never bought], but neither of them are expert Haggadah makers). It would be wise to make a one time investment in a suitable Haggadah that offers explanations, beautiful art, and a good transla-tion. Each of the major Jewish movements has created wonderful Haggadahs.

Prepare the Seder We spend so much time preparing the menu and the guest list. WE are concerned with timing, having the correct food groups, sitting the right people next to each other, etc. How much time do we spend to make sure that the ritual of the Seder is meaningful to those participating? If your Seder consists of Zeyda sitting at the head of the table saying something like "BzzzzzzzzzBzzzzzBzzzz, mumble, mumble, mumble, while Uncle Morris keep interrupting to ask, "can we eat already?" and Scott chases Melanie under the table, then you are all missing the point. If you are not going to say the entire Haggadah, take the time before-hand to decide what is important and what can be skipped.

Ask any guests you may invite to come prepared with an explanation or a

song that they remember from their Seders. It will make your guests feel at

home, and it will enhance your Seder as well.

The following Seder tips are to share with your family and friends:

Rabbi Jacob Rosner

The following Seder tips are to share with your family and friends:

Rabbi Jacob Rosner

Invite Guests In the beginning of the Seder, we proclaim, "Let all who are hungry come, and eat, all who are needy come and celebrate Passover with us." Can you imagine the pain in the heart of the senior citizen who contemplates the holy day without a spouse with whom so many Passovers were shared? No Jew should be alone on Passover. We are commanded to invite all who are hungry. That commandment includes gay or lesbian Jews who may feel alienated from the community. It includes intermarried families who may feel rejected. It includes university students who are far away from home. It is a great mitzvah to invite those who would otherwise be alone.

Explain the Rituals The Haggadah means, "the telling" because it serves as a spiritual tool to fulfill the four time repeated biblical commandments to tell the exodus story to our children. It is important to relate the story of the suffering of our people throughout the ages to the suffering of others today. Perhaps we can use the Seder as a starting point for a discussion of the plight of the African Americans in our country or the struggle for freedom for all of the Middle East.

Sing a Lot Make the Seder a joyous occasion. Be sure that every child present who is

capable, get to recite four questions the accompanying nahas of the parents.

Each child should be rewarded for finding the afikomen, not just the actual

finder. In traditional circles it is during Pesach not during Chanukah when

major gifts are given.

From the Education Director Na’ama Yarden

A new idea for your Seder The holiday of Pesach is coming soon and everyone is preparing for their Seders. Every year the whole family gather around the big table and read the Haggadah. Each family has their own traditions and fun parts that make it a special and unique event for them. The Seder is full of symbols that represent the story of coming out of Egypt and becoming free people and a nation. One very well known symbol, for ex-ample, is the Maror (the bitter herb) –As we know the tradition explanation says that it symbolizes the hard and bitter lives that we had as slaves. This year, I would like to offer a new method/prism for your Seder. One of the main subjects in the Haggadah is the change from slavery to freedom. What if this year we take the steps of the Seder (Kadesh , Urchatz, Karpas, Yachatz…it does not have to be all 15 of them ) and think creatively of what they remind us, slavery or freedom? Trying to be our own Rabbis and find new meanings in the Seder is a fun way to make things different (and this night should be different from all other nights in many ways…) Can we change our ideas around and think how , for example, the Maror reminds us of freedom and not only of slavery? Lets assume that I love the taste of Maror because it stimulates my palate. Then we can say that the Maror excites me the same way that the Israelites were excited when they became free. (they were stimulated like my palate) When we take an old established symbol and attach a new meaning to it, we make the Seder ours, more relevant and more personal. We also encourage our guests to do the same and we emphasize the diversity and the many options that symbols can play in our lives. What if we ask our guests and family to take one symbol or step and say something personal about it? In order to keep our traditions lively and fresh, we need to carve them according to our ideas, feelings and interests. This is why many families create their own Haggadahs and it is a great accomplishment for them and a wonderful source of pride. This year we are freeing our Seder from old thoughts and bringing new ideas to our table. I promise you that the kids at the table will surprise you with their ability to think outside of the box and in a very creative way. Give it a try and don’t forget to share your experience with me after the holiday. Chag Pesach Sameach V’Kasher

Sisterhood news

Hello Everyone, Mindy and I want to thank all the ladies who came to help bag shalach manot. We had a tremendous turnout. We are looking forward to Or Shalom’s community Passover Seder which will take place the second night of Passover, April 11th. Families should bring their own bottles of kosher for Passover wine – which can be purchased in our very own Or Shalom gift shop! The sisterhood will be baking for Passover and we hope many of you can join us on April 6th at 11 AM to help with the cooking. Look for the exact day and time in weekly updates. Please don’t forget to sign up for the Jewish Walking Tour of Philadelphia. This fantastic event will take place on Sunday, April 23rd at 3pm. Invite your spouses and school age children! You will learn about Philadelphia in a way you’ve never thought about it before!! The cost of the tour is $15 for adults and $12 for anyone age 17 and under. Send your check made out to “Or Shalom Sisterhood” to the attention of LP in the Or Shalom office. The tour will begin at Mikveh Israel, located on Fourth Street. It will last approximately 2 hours. If you need a ride into the city— please call me or Mindy. For those interested, we also plan to meet beforehand for a kosher lunch in the city. The exact time and location of the lunch will appear shortly in weekly updates. Attention!! The date of our Sisterhood Shabbat has changed. It will now be taking place on May 6th. Brenda Belkin and Betsy Cohen will be working hard to organize this event. Please call them and volunteer to participate! We would love to see all the old, and hopefully some new faces at this year’s Sisterhood Shabbat. The final event of the year is a pot-luck dinner scheduled for May 11th. It’s been a great year so far! Thanks to everyone who has participated in Sisterhood events!!! Laurie Katz, co-president Or Shalom Sisterhood

On Sunday evening March 26 we held our annual fundraiser, the Or Sha-lom Art Auction. It was an evening filled with wonderful music from the Perki-oman Valley High School string quartet, great food and of course the fun of bid-ding on some beautifully framed well priced works of art. Most of all we had a high spirited enthusiastic crowd from within and outside the Or Shalom commu-nity who shared friendship and fun while supporting Or Shalom. The Art Auction committee would like to thank everyone who came out to join us for this important event and those whose sponsors who bought ads and made donations. We also want to thank the many volunteers who helped make the event such a fun successful evening.
