anniversary at Clearwater Yacht Club. Both of these groups have done so much over the years in service to the club, donations of needed items and providing social functions at CYC.

Tom is back with us on a full-time basis now after recovering well from his hip replacement. Welcome back Tom!

By the time you read this edition of the Compass, the Commodores Ball will be history. I would like to congrat-ulate all past Commodores of Clearwater Yacht Club and thank also them for their service to CYC.

Remember that during the season it is helpful to call ahead to make reservations on our busier nights. Also, be sure to come by for dinner and experience the new menu offerings.

Nancy and I look forward to seeing you around the club.

What a Month March has been!My valiant crew and I entered the St.

Petersburg to Habana regatta, which started the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 28. Our crew of six included yours truly, CYC members Gerard Kane and Pierre Maneri, my brother-in-law Hugh Ott, friend Larry Steele, and Marianne Hal-las, the brave only woman on board.

We sailed south, but on Wednesday evening, the wind dropped out and we sat for hours. Not wanting to be in the middle of the Gulf Stream Friday afternoon when a strong cold front would overtake our path, we started the motor and continued toward Cuba, no longer racing.

We arrived at Marina Hemingway greeted by Nancy and her brother and proceeded to learn about the culture of the Cuban people. After our visit and delaying a couple of days for a weather window to head back across the ocean to Key West, we left at 5 a.m. Wed., March 8. The trip across was a bit rough on everyone, but Valhalla handled the seas wonderfully.

We made our way back up the coast, arriving at CYC on Saturday, March 11. Our fantastic youth sailing team and many of our great CYC members welcomed us home. My crew and I truly appreciated the warm greetings and are happy to be back.

It was an honor also this month to congratulate the Gulls on celebrating their 40th anniversary and to also congratulate the Bow Chasers on celebrating their 30th

our MeMBership continues to grow thanks to members signing up their family and friends. We will continue our summer membership program, running from May 1 through Sept. 30, in which new members pay no initiation fee and dues of $125 per month. For more information, contact GM Tom Brusini in the of-fice at 727-447-6000.

We will hold a membership appreciation party on Sunday, April 23rd at the dry dock. There will be plenty of complementary food and beverages for all, so mark your calendars to share a fun outing with all our members. The next membership meeting date is sched-uled for Wednesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m.

    Yachting

the FeBruarY Waterside meeting had continued discussions on a number of efforts, including club boat maintenance and dock main-tenance. Ress Marine has replaced and added a few pilings in the marina to help sustain our docks, while Tim Roberts and Dan recovered the concrete pad with artificial turf. Jack France is order-ing LEDs to try out on a few pedestal lights to see how they work. Letters have gone out to inactive slip holders encouraging boat and club use. We’re hoping to finish soon a review of slip and shore-power fees. The next Waterside meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 26th at 6 p.m.

Thanks to Gerard Kane, we started a monthly sunset

cruise for CYC members to gather on the Gulf to watch the sun go down, with our inaugural event on Feb. 18. The next sunset cruise will be on Saturday, April 22, getting underway about 6:30 p.m. We invite both power and sailboats planning for high tides and sunset (8:01pm that day), with a post-sunset reception/gather-ing at the Tiki. The intent is to keep it simple, make it fun, and exercise boats from the CYC Marina (and build some skills around dusk/night boating). We will send out more information by Constant Contact and e-mail or you can contact Gerard at [email protected] or me (info below) if you’d like assistance with a running-light check prior to the event.

nautical trivia of the Month: Back by [some-what] popular demand. What is the name of the navigational instrument of double reflection by means of two mirrors used for the measurement of vertical and horizontal angles at sea? Text or e-mail the correct answer to me; the fifth correct answer will get a drink on my account at the Tiki.

As usual, I can be reached at [email protected] or on my cell phone by text or voice at 727-641-8633.

Bow Chasers Celebrate turning 30The Bow Chasers celebrated our 30th anniversary with

a fabulous, fun party. More than 100 people joined to-gether in the dry dock to dance and dine the afternoon away. We shared memories of our 30 years of sailing, socials and service and, in true Bow Chaser fashion, made new memories of good times.

Many thanks to the 30th Anniversary Committee for all their hard work to make the event successful. Thanks also to Tiki master Gage for concocting our signature drink, the Capsize Cocktail.

rock the dock luauThe dry dock will be transformed into a tropical

paradise for the Rock the Dock Luau on Saturday, April 8. This is the very first time the Bow Chasers are sponsoring a Rock the Dock party, so you know that means lots of fun is in store. There will be flowered shirts galore, lots of leis and a special luau menu. Join the good time!

Breakfast with Mrs. BunnyThe annual Breakfast with Mrs. Bunny is an Easter egg

hunt and so much more! If your kids or grandkids like games, singing and winning prizes, be sure you make a reservation to join us on Saturday, April 15. The bunny-shaped pancakes are always a hit with the kids and grownups too.

sailing newsCongratulations to our Rainbow Regatta Team of

Dorothy Connor, Luce Gray, Cathy McNally and Joy Sheets. High winds meant that we will reschedule our own Love of Sailing regatta. In April, we are sending racers to interclub races put on by the Bitter Ends, Salty Sisters and Windlasses.

    saturdays at Clearwater Yacht Club: April: 1, 8, 22, 29 (Blessing of the Fleet at CYC, 29th; Easter is the 15th, no classes)Youth after-school programTuesdays and Thursdays 1600-1730)April: 4 & 6, 25 & 27summer Camp 2017Mondays-Fridays 0900-1600 Session 1: 12-23 June (Graduation 1100 23 June)Session 2: 10-21 July (Graduation 1100 21 July) Session 3: 24 July – 4 August (Graduation 1100-04 August)

Winter/sprinG sailing classes have featured enthusiastic “Intrepid Sailors” of all ages enjoying the gift of fine weather and fair winds! This has been a winning combination for us, enabling both kids and adults to fine-tune their upwind sailing skills.

We are especially proud of our young sailors who volunteered to offer their time and service during the Laser Mid-Winter Regatta by preparing coffee and transporting food to the Sailing Center. They arrived ready for work at 0700. (Not too bad for typical kids who might have preferred to sleep in on a Saturday morning!) Service to the community is an important aspect of the universal values we hope to instill in the lives of our children, and over the past several months they have exemplified the values of service and sac-rifice not only during the Laser Regatta but through their participation in the Ted Irwin Memorial “Feed the Hungry” Sailathon.

Our Winter/Spring programs will continue to meet through the month of April. Saturday classes will con-clude with CYC’s Blessing of the Fleet on 29 April, and our After-School program will finish up on Thursday 4 May. We will then move into high gear in preparation for the start of our six-week summer camp.

I know that I speak for all our Intrepid Sailors when I say that we are truly thankful to be part of the Clear-water Yacht Club “family.” We wish you “fair winds,” the love of family and friends, a Happy Passover, and Easter Blessings.

Fr Bob WagenseilFleet Chaplain(727) 510-6153 [email protected]

The Intrepid Sailors were out in full force for the Clark Mills Regatta and Commodore Proefke was on hand to congratulate the young winners.

CYC’s veneraBle Gulls celebrated their 40th anniversary in March with a lovely luncheon and historical display that showed just how much this group has contributed to the Club in the past four decades.

Over the years, this group has raised nearly $95,000 from various fund raisers and the sale of their beautiful handmade crafts, all so they can provide gifts to the Club. Here’s a short list of what they have given to CYC: three pianos, two pool heaters, kitchen equipment and blinds. They have remodeled the ladies’ restrooms at least five times, paid for carpeting, the chandelier and the outside canopies. Most recently, the Gulls installed the beautiful Memorial Garden Wall.

The Gulls have also sponsored Toys for Tots and Break-fast with Santa; they’ve supported yachting with nu-merous landside activities, and they address, stamp and mail out the Compass each month. They take CYC into the community by contributing to the Marine Science Center, UPARC/ARC, Morton Plant Hospital and other outreach programs.

More than a dozen past presidents attended the luncheon to reminisce about the days when dues were $5 (now $15) and when 1985 president Hank Hardy purchased a camera with S&H Green Stamps. Gulls’ early scrapbooks from the 1970s and 1980s were filled with local newspaper articles that chronicled the Club’s advancement into sailing and of Club members just hav-ing fun.

Without any doubt, CYC owes the Gulls much appre-ciation for their generosity and their role in making CYC the warm, friendly Club that it is.

tina Fitzgerald, a long-time CYC member and the first-mate of PC Robert de Vos, died on March 1. Tina was also co-editor of the Compass for many years, a job she was perfectly suited to thanks to her dazzling smarts, im-peccable memory and stringent command of grammar.

She was born in Darby, Pa., just five miles southwest of downtown Philadelphia and was an avid fan of both home-town teams, the Eagles and the Phillies. Tina graduated from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, where she happened to take a class in economics from Robert de Vos (the PC insists she wasn’t a teenager when they met).

After the couple moved to Florida in 1994, Tina got her master’s degree at the University of South Florida, became a CPA and taught accounting classes at USF. She was quietly ac-tive in all CYC activities, pitching in wherever there was a need without any fanfare or expectation of acknowledgement.

Tina was a unique combination of brainy and kind. She was gentle and humble and funny. She was soft-spoken and un-pretentious, a pure soul who could deliver a three-word quip that could land with a laugh, not a sting.

For those of us who will always miss her, a celebration of Tina’s life will begin at noon on Sat., April 8 at CYC.

Tina was a strong supporter of Fr. Bob Wagenseil’s Youth Sailing Program at CYC. She had requested that any donations be sent to the Indian Rocks Family Sailing Association (c/o Fr. Bob at CYC).

our trip to Venice Yacht Club was a hit-or-miss, depending on your perspective. For those who made the trip, it was wonderful being there during the annual Downtown Venice Art Festival. Despite chilly and windy conditions, crowds were huge and we had a wonderful time.

Dinner at Venice Yacht Club Friday night couldn’t have been better. We were treated extremely well, in fact, we closed the club down. After a long day at the art show we decided to just spend the evening at the Venice Tiki bar and play games, knowing that we had to cross Tampa Bay on Sunday.

The conditions were brutal with seas of five to seven feet and wind gusting to 20 knots. For one couple, it was so bad that they are buying a bigger boat, swearing to never go through that again. Those of you who didn’t make it were possibly being astute, figuring out that the weather was not cooperating. Nevertheless, everyone had a great weekend.

Next trip is our annual long cruise which will take us to Sarasota, Naples, Key West, Marathon, Marco Island, Ft. Myer, Longboat Key then home.

    See you on the water.

CYC hosted the International Order of Blue Gavel during the association’s winter regional meeting on March 3 and 4. Blue Gavel is an international association of past yachting commodores that engages in educational and humanitarian activi-ties. Thirty-three attended the executive meet-ings, and on Friday night, with invited guests (totaling over 40) they enjoyed dinner and live music. Many compliments were given with regard to their dinners. Our own Fleet Captain, Curtis Wold, was the featured speaker and gave a very interesting and informative presenta-tion on the Joint Reconnaissance Branch at U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. At the Saturday Executive Meeting, CYC was presented with a plaque thanking us for hosting this year’s Regional Meeting. Most of the group also stayed for the Sunday Brunch before returning home.

MarCh Was another great month at the Club! The house and grounds committee was busy with many projects. Chef John has put together a new menu and some new specials that have been well received. The membership pro-vided many suggestions to us. Many of the suggestions are already on the new menu, and some will be featured as specials.

The next project we are working on is remodeling the dry dock restrooms and showers. We are in the process of designing the scope of the work and getting bids for the job. Todd Crosbie and PC Tim Roberts are leading the charge on the project.

The Dockmaster’s office is being remodeled and should be finished by the end of the month. Member Ken Schroeder has been generous to design and build out the project.

We have purchased a hand held VHF Radio for the Tiki Bar to back up the dockmaster and office staff to better serve our members.

We have many projects in progress that we will be sharing with you in the coming months as we get more of the details worked out.

As we look forward to the rest of 2017, we are organizing a list of proposed projects to improve the Club. We would love your input on ideas to improve the facility and the op-erations. The committee will be meeting on Tuesday, April 4th at 6:30 in the board room. Please join us for a short (I promise) meeting and then stay for dinner!

    See you at the club!
