Country Beat ……………………………………..……!by PCSO Lynne Maurice !It is with deep regret and much sadness that I start my article this month. A very dear colleague and friend PCSO 2858 Phil Jones who worked with myself and others at Overton Station, has recently passed away after a brave fight with cancer. Phil was a hardworking, committed part of our team and always had a smile for everyone. Phil will be missed by all who knew him. RIP. !Criminals can steal your credit card data by standing close to you or your handbag, in a queue or on public transport, and using an electronic scanner. The new threat exists because of the radio-frequency identification chips (RFID) or Near Field Communication (NFC) chips that are starting to be embedded in credit and debit cards. A modern thief can use this "swipe to pay" technology to capture your info by scanning your wallet or purse with an electronic scanner. It's easy, however, to protect yourself. !Flintshire & Wrexham Online Watch Link Association (OWL) have ‘Card Minder Aluminium Pouches’ on sale for £1 which help prevent contactless bank card/credit fraud known as ‘skimming’ or electronic pickpocketing. email: [email protected] or tel: 01352 708118 !Many thanks Lynne !Lynne Maurice PCSO 0151 North Wales Police Overton Police Station, Mobile 07854 352 815 Phone 01978 348425 / extn. 48425 email: [email protected]

Ramblings from the Reverend

by Rev’d Canon David Child During the past month there have been some amazing sunsets over Overton. Towards evening I’ve often looked westwards to the hills over Ruabon only to be amazed at the different patterns and the different hues of red, and pink and have thought to myself –‘Wow!’ !They reminded me of this story. Father Arrupe who was then the head of the Jesuit Order was visiting some Jesuits working in a desperately poor slum in Latin America. One evening he was celebrating Mass for the local people in a decrepit building with cats and dogs wandering in and out freely. When it was over a big man with a hang-dog expression which made him feel uneasy came up to him and asked him to ‘Come to my place, I have something to give you.’ He was a bit wary, but the local priest told him, ‘Don’t worry, he’s a decent sort of bloke, go with him.’ So he went. His house was a rickety shed on the point of collapsing. He invited the father to sit down on a rickety chair. From there he could see the sunset. The big man said to him, ‘Look how beautiful it is!’ They sat for several minutes as the sun slowly disappeared from view. Then the man said, ‘I don’t know how to thank you for all you have done for us. I have nothing to give you, but I thought you would like to see this sunset. You liked it, didn’t you?’ Then he said ‘Good evening’ and shook his hand. !Belief in God will never die as long as there are people who have the time to sit and watch the sun go down and wonder. I do and I was taught to think scientifically long before I learnt to think theologically. With every Blessing, David

Cubs visit Cosford !On 27th February Overton Cub Pack joined a large number of Cub Packs from Wrexham, for a fun and informative day out at RAF Cosford. !It was a great day out looking at all types of aircraft, learning about the Cold War and the history of the RAF. At the same time the Cubs were challenged to complete a quiz of what they learned on the day, which combined with the recent water rocket building night and paper airplane night, means the pack are well on their way to their flight badge. !There is a great interactive area that allowed the Cubs to experiment and understand better how airplanes worked. The favourite was a bomber on a track that had to pick up and then release a “bomb” onto a target, most of the Cubs enjoyed this.

Lunch was a picnic in the “Mess Hall” and the end of the trip was completed with a group photo and a large rendition of the Hokey Cokey.!

Messy Church !The March Messy Church was all about Easter and spring. The beautiful weather enticed a large number of people to attend and we decorated hard boiled eggs and coloured cardboard egg pictures, folded paper to make origami bunnies and weaved strips of card together to create placemats. !Cakes were mixed and decorated and cake toppers were created from icing. Cut flowers were placed into pots of compost to make gardens which were then adorned with a lolly stick cross. The children formed three teams to make a safe package for an (uncooked) egg so that it could be thrown on to the floor without breaking and hunted for chocolate Easter eggs in the sunshine. !Canon David led a discussion about the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem and gave everyone a cross made of palm leaves as a symbol of Easter. Canon Lisa led a prayer in which everyone contributed ideas of why we are thankful for Jesus. Everyone shared a lovely meal of pasta and salad with cheesecake as pudding. We look forward to seeing you all again next month on April 13th at 3pm.

Dear Editor,!There are some dirty, filthy dog owners who are using Dark Lane and every front door on the High St as a toilet facility for their pet. This is not acceptable in a civilised world, where one person dumps filth on another’s doorstep. I am installing CCTV to protect my property from these two legged animals, and will send evidence to the police. Be warned. James Glover !Ed: There are also complaints from Parkside, Turning Street and the Millennium meadow. It is very sad to see that someone has been hanging full poo bags on the fence at the back of St. Mary's School. This is an absolute disgrace.

School News S t M a r y ’ s P r i m a r y School has been fund raising for Sport Relief. We have been getting sporty and have raised nearly £200 to support this worthy cause! The pupils dressed up in all manner o f spor t ing o u t f i t s . W e h a d Foo tba l l e r s , Rugby players, Martial artists, Dancers, Runners and even a Sailor! Every year group took part in a Sport Relief Mile around the school field. We had lightning fast runners to gentle strollers. Some ran, skipped, dribbled footballs while others patiently crawled! Well done and thank you to all the staff, pupils and parents for their generous donations. This term our School Council were privileged to be invited to formally meet the Lady Mayor (Councillor Barbara Roxburgh) in her parlour at the Guildhall in Wrexham. The children had a fantastic tour by the Mayor and learnt about the work and running of the council. As part of our visit, the children visited the chambers to see where formal meetings are run. The children were fascinated to find out that when somebody is due to speak a red light shines to show they are using the microphone and are entitled to speak!

Overton to become National Vending Machine Pilot site Overton Oracle Team members have learned of exciting news which will lead to the village receiving interest from the National press and even further afield. The success of the cheese vending machine has sparked an interest with companies looking to scale up and capitalise on the opportunities and low running costs which are synonymous with the outdoor automated 24 retailing experience. Once again the village is pioneering. Locals have been enjoying the benefits of purchasing cheese and related dairy products throughout the day and night and the feedback has been very positive so far. An intrepid Oracle reporter managed to interview one particular local, Wendy Dale as she made her purchases. Asked for a view she replied “I’m a busy mum and work hard to fit in all of my many commitments. It may be 3.30a.m. in the morning and minus 2 degrees tonight but at least I’m sorted for cheese on toast for breakfast, to be fair”. The large scale introduction of vending machines has been submitted for planning permission which will include; 24 hour newspaper vending on the High St: 24

hour Coffee on the corner of School Lane: 24 hour packed Meat products on the corner of Bangor Road: 24 hour Energy Drinks also on School Lane and 24 alcohol and crisps vending in the park. T h e F e d e r a t i o n O f Outdoor Locations are backing the development a n d a r e l o o k i n g t o highlight Overton as a

National and International Beacon Site for the outdoor

automated 24 hour retailing experience. It is envisaged that the model will be further extended to cover Bangor On Dee, Penley and Erbistock, bringing potentially thousands of visitors as the pilot grows. The Federation or F.O.O.L’s as it is commonly known is sure the development will be wholeheartedly welcomed by the locals. Any objections should be made by APRIL 1st to: [email protected]

PCSO Philip Wynn Jones On Wednesday March 16 2016 we said goodbye to Phil who died on February 28th aged 52 years. The congregation heard tributes from family, friends and colleagues reflecting on his life and sense of humour. Phil had played The Last Post on many an occasion and this tribute in turn was paid to him. As a PCSO Phil undertook to fulfil his lawful Police duty but his role as a Community Support Officer was always as important to him too. In October 2013, Phil organised the Overton Rural Roadshow which gave the older community the opportunity to meet with the Police and partner agencies. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. Fundraising The village hall was rocking on Friday 19th Feb. when a sell out concert by "the Blues Band" hit the village. Those of a certain age will remember names such as Paul Jones of Manfred Man, Tom McGuinness of McGuinness Flint plus a brilliant support act who entertained for a full 2 1/2 hours. these seasoned entertainers were very impressed with the facilities that such a small village can offer. !This was also a fund raiser for the "village defibrillator unit". The community council have already promised £600 so this went a long way to matching this figure, which puts us in a very strong position to go ahead with the project. Thanks go to all those who helped to make this a roaring success. Jim Glover

We managed to raise £210 which is fantastic. !We have also had our children's Easter party which was another success with children enjoying the craft activities, Easter bonnet competition (see photo of the winner, Poppy Valentine on the right with her friend Lilly) and of course a fab Easter Egg hunt in the sunshine. Overton Twinning Association Wine Tasting Event !On Saturday 27th February, Overton’s twinning associated held its annual wine tasting event in the Scout Hut. It’s amazing what a difference some fairy lights and a spot of creative decorating can do for an interior as the atmosphere was very welcoming. Demand was high, with tickets selling out and there was a nice mix of seasoned Twinners and greenhorns. The food was delicious with a liver pate being singled out for praise in particular. As for

wine, despite having attended a number of wine tasting courses over the years, this unnamed Oracle attendee still managed to incorrectly identify every single one. Many thanks to all those who made this a great evening, raising funds to help pay for the visit of our French partners, and a satisfying profit of £750 was made. This July, 14 people, aged from 10 to 70+ are travelling to La Murette to spend a week with our French friends. Everyone is very excited and can't wait for the holiday

to begin. If you'd like more information about this sociable and vibrant association, have a look at Overton's website. Follow the link to Twinning FAQs and contact details.
