2016, the following actions were taken:l Curtis Wold was named Fleet Captain and ap-

pointed to the Board.l Minutes of the February meeting were approved.l CYC will support the Florida Commodores Asso-

ciation Foundation fundraiser for the 2016 Rio Olym-pics through club members wishing to make personal donations.

l New membership applications were approved. The date of the next Board of Directors meeting was

set for April 21, 2016.

Commodores ball, all I can say is WOW! A sincere thanks to all who attended; the house was packed. Dinner and service were excellent. Thank you staff! And the club was beautifully decorated, thanks to my wife Phyl-lis, who designed the table and en-try hall decorations. A lot of work goes into decorating our club for all events, but especially formal events. Phyllis could not do this alone, so a special thanks goes to Helen Correia, Kathy Milam, Pam Estes, along with the club staff and Virginia Vollenweider. Kudos ladies!!!

Coming this month is the Clark Mills sailing regatta. Clark Mills, for whom the regatta is named, moved to Clearwater from Michigan as a small child. In 1947 Clark designed a small sailboat for young kids to learn to build and sail called the Optimist. The Optimist, or pram, as it is called at CYC, is the most produced sailboat in the world. This boat was originally designed to be built from 3 sheets of plywood, with basic wood-working abilities. As time progressed, builders began to modify the boats to gain speed advantages. Most boats today are made of fiberglass. Our club prams are 30+ years old and currently undergoing complete restora-tion. The finished products look like new. You can check them out on the west lawn stored in the new pram racks completed last year.

Our club continues to grow with new members. We are currently at 413 total members with a net goal of one new regular member per month. I would like to reach 450+ members by year end. While we have nearly five times as many regular members as social, our social member num-bers are outgrowing regular members. However, social members miss out on key club benefits, such as reciprocity with other yacht clubs. We occasionally visit other FCYC clubs, sometimes by boat, sometimes by car, always enjoy-ing ourselves, sampling their parties and food and some-times bringing back good ideas.

Here’s good news: Our first-quarter revenue exceeded budget, so help us make the second quarter even better! If you’ve ever wondered which CYC membership produces the most revenue, the answer is that about 70 percent of club revenue comes from regular full members, 15 percent from social members and 8 percent from seasonal members, with the balance from reciprocal, junior and dining members. Next month I will highlight statistics about various club activities, including the Chili Cook-off, Chowdah Challenge, Super Bowl and Bingo.

Coming April 9th is one of my favorite events at our

club, The Blessing of the Fleet, which is for ALL member boats, NOT just boats in the marina. Come in time to at-tend the dockside ceremony before the water blessing. It is a great tradition and whether you are on shore or in a boat you will find it fun and rewarding. Come be with Father Bob, myself and other current and past bridge officers for this great Clearwater Yacht Club tradition! The club requests all boats in the marina be decorated with nautical flags for the blessing. It’s a beautiful event! And Cruisers, I challenge you all to decorate and come to the Blessing!

I look forward to seeing you at the club!!

Nautical Trivia of the Month: this Roman god of unknown origin but thought to be associated with Salacia, the goddess of salt water, was later identified with the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. Who was it? I’ll buy a drink at the Tiki Bar for the first member to e-mail or text me the correct answer!

The Taver Bayly dining room sparkled, incomparably decorated by the Club’s most stylish members: Phyllis Cardosi, Helen Correia, Pam Estes and Kathy Milam, ably aided by the staff, especially Virginia Vollenweider.

Commodore Cardosi requested that photos be taken of every guest and pre-sented at the end of the glorious evening. Our beloved Virginia has turned out to be CYC’s Photographer Extraordinaire – she accomplished the Commodore’s wish and more, as all the photos of the 2016 Commodores Ball were taken by her.

And so ends another Commodores Ball, bravo to all!

Saturday, May 7th, 2016NEWS FLASH......May 7th is the Bee Bee CYC/ARC FUN DAY! It has been renamed in memory of the late Beverly ‘Bee Bee’ Brewer, who was a strong supporter of this event for many, many years. We are expecting a great attendance from ARC. In honor of Bee Bee, this year’s T Shirts will include Bee Bee’s name. We are also honoring our friends that donate their time and services to this event: JR for the music, Venus Restaurant for the hamburgers and hot dogs, Clearwater Marine Aquarium for the pontoon boat and Captain.

The ARC of Tampa Bay is the Association of Retarded

Citizens. The clients, all of varying ages, come to the club to enjoy a cookout, boat rides and music. CYC Club members volunteer their time cooking, serving food and drinks, clean-ing up, and making sure all clients have a fun day!

The only way the Fun Day happens is because of so many members and friends volunteering their time and talent. We have had several members ask how they can help financially. First, please donate to CYC/ARC; you will receive an invitation with a special envelope included. We always ask for members to buy T-shirts and buy extra ones for the ARC clients.

The important part is to donate to this wonderful organiza-tion that is the only place for help for many with intellectual and development disabilities. In years past we have donated an average of $7,500 each year - let’s top that this year!

aPril is one of my favorite months of the year. Spring is here and the weather is so pleasant in April.

The Blessing of the Fleet will be held on April 9th. The evening before, on Friday April 8th, we will have the Sock Burning party in the dry dock and our fabulous seafood buffet dinner in the main dining room. The Blessing of the Fleet is a great tradition that we do each year at CYC and if you have not attended one, it is truly an enjoyable event. Even if you do not have a boat, come and you can get a ride on one of the participating boats.

The foyer crown molding is ordered and will be installed once it arrives. Also, the dry dock pavers should be repaired, cleaned and sealed by the time you read this article. You will be dancing on our new dance floor at the next party you attend down stairs. We realized it was time to replace the worn dance floor that we have been using for too many years.

The new menu has been well received as Chef John has received many compliments on the new items. John continues to bring delicious and exciting new specials to us as well and the galley crew does a great job of preparing and serving excellent dinners.

Spring is here and Clearwater Yacht Club is the place to be. I look forward to seeing you all at the club.

sPrinG has sPrunG at the Clearwater Yacht Club. We had a fantastic March with many exciting events, the crown jewel of which was the Commodores Ball. We had fantastic attendance, great live music and the kitchen staff knocked it out of the park to make the evening a blast for all!

Looking forward to April, we will be enjoying many fun events with great entertain-ment. On Sunday April 3rd we will be hosting line dancing upstairs at 4:00. If you missed this last time, mark your calen-dars, everyone in the room was smiling!

To mark the beginning of spring, we will be having the Burning of the Socks on Friday April 8th to kick off another great weekend at the club. Saturday the 9th is our annual Blessing of the Fleet. After the festivities, we will have live music at the Tiki in the afternoon.

On Wednesday the 13th we will be hosting Jazz Night at the club with Dwayne White. Dwayne is a great local Jazz musician; this will be his first appearance at Clearwa-ter Yacht Club.

The membershiP Committee is continuing to explore new avenues that will increase our numbers, but it seems we are just staying even between the ad-dition of new members and the resignation of existing members. We could certainly use your help with new ideas and new events that will encourage people to join. Don’t forget to bring your neighbors and friends to the club!

Club usage is extremely important to our success, and a look at the financial data from the past few months clearly shows that 75 percent of our full members use the club regularly, while 25 percent never use it. If you know members that do not use the club, please encour-age them to come back and enjoy their membership.

Motown Night will be back on the 23rd, hosted by Terry Williams. The club will be rockin’ with the sounds of the Motor City’s best music!

We will finish off the month with a Rock the Dock Party on April 30th featuring Quinton Dean at the Tiki Bar. April will be absolutely fun-filled at CYC!

We’Ve had a very busy and memorable time this past month. First, there was the Pasadena cruise hosted by Fred and Carole Bleakley. They hosted a fabulous docktail party on Friday night, followed by dinner at the Pasadena Yacht Club. Saturday we visited the Gulfport art show during the day, and then Fred and Carole had made dinner reservations for 30 at a quaint B&B. I’m not sure if they normally serve that many people in a week, much less one night. It was wonderful.

Next up was lunch at The Pub in Indian Rocks on a Saturday, hosted by John and Sue Speck. We had 34 people show up by boat and car. John and Sue had us play-ing a game called Left Right Center which is a money game using quarters. It was a great afternoon, with good friends, conversation, laughs and good food.

Finally, there was our trip to The Club at Treasure Island hosted by Ray and Arlene Cutro. Dinner for 30 at The Club’s Friday night all-you-can-eat seafood buffet was great. Saturday we had a potluck dinner that included everything from Irish stew to bar-b-q. Following dinner Ray and Arlene had us playing games that are hard to explain. A pool cue thru a toilet paper roll, an orange in a pair of panty hose tied around your waist and pushing a Bocce ball, then wives blindfolded trying to find their husbands by feeling the men’s legs. You just can’t make this stuff up!Next up, Regatta Point for the seafood festival. See you there!

After a hiatus of many years, St. Petersburg Yacht Club’s Pass-a-Grille station now offers FCYC members arrival by boat. Transient slip reser-vations may be made through dockmaster Adam Harnen, 727-822-3227.

by fr. bob Wagenseil, Jr activities/ Youth & adult sailing Classes

The PasT monTh has been one of excel-lent sailing conditions and outstanding progress for our Intrepid Sailors and their dedicated instructors and sup-port staff. Every class provides us with the opportunity to “learn something new!”

Our remedial “after-school” students are working hard to improve their skills on all points of sail as well as their abilities to correctly tie a variety of knots and safely rig their boats.

The Saturday Opti and 420 teams are gearing up for the Clark Mills Regatta as they improve their under-standing of racing rules and tactics. Under the leader-ship of Ned Covel, DJ Tassone and Noah Lyons, these outstanding young men and women are striving to become excellent competitive sailors who value the virtues of team work, safety, and good seamanship.

Our Intrepid Adult Sailors are sharpening their skills every week and, much like the kids, are building friend-ships and having fun on the water.

Preparation for Summer Camp 2016 is in high gear! All sessions are full and we have a growing wait list. Our Junior Leadership candidates are preparing for testing in April and we are confident that 2016 is going to be a wonderful experience for our kids, their families, and our dedicated staff and volunteers.

As always, we are grateful for those CYC members who stop by to say hello to students and parents during Saturday classes. Their presence and words of encour-agement mean a great deal to us. Together with CYC’s outstanding staff including Dan, Linda, Tom and Virginia, we are truly thankful to be part of the CYC family and look forward to great days to come.

Wishing you fair winds and many blessings!Fr. Bob [email protected] (727) 510-6153

Ladies LuncheonsSave the date: Wednesday, April 20thFashion Show presented by PatchingtonIf you missed the February luncheon you missed a great

chance to win a fabulous photograph donated as a door prize by our speaker, Bernie Fillipi. (One of us was very fortunate to win!)

March brought us another appetizing program presented by personal chef Dawn Bause. We munched on 4 different hors d’oeuvres that she showed us how to prepare before we enjoyed a wonderful salad prepared by Chef John.

If you’ve missed our last couple of luncheons, you may not know that we now have a trivia question worth a $5.00 gift certificate for your next ladies luncheon. Congratulations to Sandie Ramsden as the winner of our first trivia contest in February, and Marie Bard for March. Watch for your Gazette and this article every month for possible answers.

Seen flying aroundThe Gulls were again involved with preparing Race Com-

mittee bags, this time for the Snipes regatta.Handmade lap robes and hats were donated to the 101st

Airborne Division Association, Florida Gulf Coast Chapter to be distributed to wounded soldiers at Bay Pines Hospital. Thanks to Dennis and Susan Reardon for delivering these on our behalf.

Did you know? The Gulls are preparing to celebrate our 40th anniversary.

In 1977 Margaret Hanselman, with the help of two friends, Connie Aylward and Helen Eckhoff, formulated a plan for a group which would become a special and integral part of the Clearwater Yacht Club. Twenty-five ladies showed up for the first luncheon meeting where Mary Lou Straker was elected president. Betty McGraw-Perkins came up with the name CYC (SEA) Gulls.
