  • How is a playground like the Torah? Both require one to be creative. Both encourage active engagement

of individuals and groups. Both adorn our synagogue. Both invite in the casual visitor and the longtime dweller. Both yield enjoyment in proportion to the effort invested. Both provide an opportunity to inspire and organize a community. Both contain some wrestling, some secrets, tales of friendship, learning new rules, and a locust or two!

The author of the Psalms says that both are objects of delight. Psalm 119 says, Lulei toratcha shaashuai az avadti veoni. The Torah is described as a shaashua a plaything. It is a wonderful image of Torah as something physical that delights us and in the context of Psalms, that rescues us from our affliction. We turn to Torah for comfort when we are grieving. We turn to Torah for companionship when we are feeling alone. We turn to Torah for inspiration when we are feeling empty and are desirous of being filled up. We turn to Torah for images of joy when we are laid low.

The Psalmist says that the Torah, meaning both the sacred text of Torah and all that Torah comes to represent, is our shaashua our plaything that brings delight to us.

    PREPaRinG foR PeSAH

PREPaRinG foR PEsah PASSOVER is a holiday of hope, renewal, and life. Natures spring is the backdrop for our peoples Exodus story of beginnings and freedom. Passovers message and mood encourage and inspire us. As spring begins, Passover reminds us. We are keepers of a vision, advocates for redemption. Celebrating Pesah by gathering with family and friends around our Seder tables and joining in community, we attach our personal lives and concerns to the grand and potent moral principles for which God brought our ancestors out of Egypt.

Join with Rabbi Shulman to engage in a close reading of Judaisms Master Story as well as the Haggadah and come away with new insights from the past for creating meaningful Seder activities and discussions for this year.

Attendance at this minyan is a special mitzvah for all first-born males. First born daughters and everyone else are also welcome.

need a Seder? have an extra Seat? A community celebrates together and we want to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to celebrate Passover. Watershed Action Plan, page 1

Beneath the Surface Eleven Bat Mitzvah girls and their mothers from across the Chizuk Amuno community came together in February and March to spend three Sunday mornings talking, crafting and exploring in preparation for becoming Bat Mitzvah. After talking about family rituals and Jewish rituals, the pairs each created their own private and unique ritual to celebrate

their relationship and the upcoming Bat Mitzvah. It was wonderful to see new friendships formed between both mothers and daughters and to enjoy time in community with friends from all the Chizuk Amuno schools.

If your daughter is becoming Bat Mitzvah and you would like to be in our next group of Beneath the Surface, be in touch with Rabbi Debi Wechsler [email protected].

    practical enhancements to our property.

Through a design by the engineering firm

Colbert, Matz, Rosenfelt working with landscape

architect Jean Mellott, and developed with

our school educators, there will be a newly

created landscaping and water drainage plan

in the area of the parking lot known to many

as Lake Chizzy which currently experiences

water overflow in the parking area near the

administration entrance. A second area of the

plan addresses and improves water runoff

along the southern edge of the parking lot

along the 695 Beltway. A third area of the plan

    creates an exciting environmental educational

setting at the entrance of the Goldsmith Early

    Childhood Education Center.

An extensive Request for Proposal process

resulted in the selection of Bourn Environ-

mental, LLC as the contractor for the project

which will be coordinated with the construc-

tion of the new playgrounds to take advan-

tage of any mutual site preparation, protec-

tion, and development planning. Our Board

of Trustees recently reviewed the plans and

    approved the project.

All construction areas will be fenced off for

the safety of our children and others, but

please take care when driving in the park-

ing lot near the work areas. Thank you, in

advance, for reminding your children to avoid

the work areas during the construction period.

Our thanks to Ann Betten and her com-

mittee (Allen Brown, Stuart Kaplow, Arnie

Wallenstein, Howard Brill), the House &

Grounds Committee, our school heads, and

the countless hours contributed pro-bono by

our engineers Dick Matz and Tom Hewitt.

Chizuk wears Jeans for GenesBy marci Scher

World RARE Disease Day is an annual observance held on the last day of February. On Monday, February 29th, Chizuk Amuno staff wore jeans for genes to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to treatments and medical representation for individuals with rare diseases and their families. According to the Global Genes website, there are approximately 7,000 different types of rare diseases and disorder and 30 million people in the United States (10% of the U.S. Population) are living with a rare

disease. In the United States, a condition is considered rare if it affects fewer than 200,000 persons combined in a particular rare disease group. Approximately 50% of the people affected by rare disease are children. Approximately 50% of rare diseases do not have a disease specific foundation supporting or researching their rare disease.

Living with a family member with a rare disease can be rewarding and challenging at the same time. My son, Ian, is one of those children composing the 50% affected with a rare disease. You become the person with the most knowledge on the disease, more than any doctor. You become the person breaking grounds for others to follow. You become the one who knows when calling the doctor, you will most likely be the one who comes up with the treatments plan. All of those becomes are rewarding and challenging at the same time. There is no support group for Ians disease, he is 1 of 6 known cases. We have gotten support over the years through family, friends, Chai Lifeline and Gilchrist for Kids. Having these groups has been a blessing, yet I wonder what it would be like to have a specific foundation for support or research.

KRiEGER sCHECHTER Day sCHoolTheir First Siddurim! Chizuk Amuno first graders at Krieger Schechter received their first siddurim and the congregation celebrated with them on Shabbat morning February 27th. Our students, together with their parents, grandparents and siblings attended the Family Service where they were welcomed by Rabbi Seltzer and then were honored by Rabbi Wechsler in the Main Sanctuary by leading Ein Keloheinu and Adon Olam. Rabbi Wechsler spoke to the almost two

dozen first graders about the congregations pride in their ability to help lead the service and expressed a hope that their new siddurim (lovingly decorated by their parents) become their reim ahuvim, their beloved companions throughout a life of prayer and community. Mazal Tov to our Krieger Schechter First Graders on this wonderful milestone.

A new Siddur for Shabbat and Festivals Siddur lev Shalem

We are excited to announce the publication of a new Shabbat and Festival

prayer book for use in Conservative synagogues. Siddur lev Shalem, a com-

panion to Mahzor lev Shalem which we use during the High Holy Days here

at Chizuk Amuno, seeks to invigorate the prayer experience, empowering

individuals by offering clear instructions, explanations of the context of each

prayer and transliterations for those who do not know Hebrew.

In order to determine if we should adopt Siddur lev Shalem as our prayer book here at

Chizuk Amuno Congregation, during the month of March the Ritual Committee sponsored

exploration sessions for congregants to become familiar with the prayer book, consider its

    features, and offer comments.

If you missed these sessions and are curious to see the Siddur, please contact Rabbi

Shulman. If would like to peruse and study this new Siddur lev Shalem, copies are available

to borrow or purchase from the rabbinic office.

The siddurdraws from more than 500 different sources with writings from contemporary

authors and includesancient blessings that date back to the first millennium in the land of

Israel, as well as traditions from the full array of Jewish cultures. Designed for use by individ-

uals, as well as for congregations, in both the home and the synagogue, Siddur lev Shalem

(meaning full, content heart) includes both the traditional Shabbat and festival prayers and

those written by modern poets and writers.

It is a physical image of an ethereal idea, a toy that we take into our hands and toss back and forth. It is not a burden or an obstacle, it is that which helps us alleviate our burden and overcome our obstacles through play.

Some of our Torah values will be reflected in our new playground: hiddur mitzvah creating a beautiful outdoor prayer space to enhance our worship; Shemirat ha guf ensuring that our new playground is safe for our children and all who come to enjoy it; kol yisrael areivim zeh ba zeh our entire Chizuk Amuno family has come together to build the playground and be built by it; uve lekhtecha ba derekh Jewish values are learned not only in classrooms but outside on the playground.

We are so excited for our new playground and anticipate it being a shaashua in the image of our Torah. There is a time to learn and a time to play and we look forward to the times of learning, worshipping, playing, and engaging that will happen at our new playground.

Celebrate a Simhah and Sponsor a Kiddush

Our appreciation to the generous members and friends who have sponsored our Shabbat morning Kiddush to recog-nize an important occasion. Celebrate your Simhah with your congregational family, honor or remember a loved

one, or mark a special time of year with a contribution to the Kiddush Fund.

A Shabbat morning Kiddush Sponsor is a $700 contribution and a Co-Spon-sor is a $350 contribution. Our Bnei Mitzvah families are also generous sponsors of our weekly congregational Kiddush. Expanded Kiddush menus are also available. Please contact Jenny Baker at the synagogue for information.
