GIFT TABLE Our March meeting was a success, we raffled off the Ruger Mark 3, it was won by Dick Desjardins, next month’s special gun raffle will be a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum. Like the last special raffle, 75 tickets at $10.00 each will be sold and the gun will be raffled off when all the tickets are sold. Get your tickets early, people were still trying to buy them at them, after they were sold out. At this time, the regular Gift Table has not been purchased, so you will just have to come to the meeting to see what is on it. Dennis Tentindo

GOAL, NRA, NSSF GOAL: The Supreme Judicial Court ruled on March 11th that the chief of police in Worcester was within his rights to deny a gun license to a man charged with domestic violence. In 2005, the Worcester police chief used the “suitable person” standard to deny Raymond Holden a license to carry. The chief suspended Holden's license two days after he was arraigned for allegedly assaulting his wife. The complaint against Holden was dismissed two weeks later at the request of Holden’s wife, but the police chief continued to deny Holden a gun license. The SJC ruled that conduct which is criminal and violent - regardless of whether it resulted in a criminal conviction - is grounds for denial, revocation, or suspension of a license to carry a firearm on the basis of unsuitability. The court also ruled that the suitable person standard “passes muster under the United States and the Massachusetts Constitutions.” Although Mass law has changed since 2005 when Holden was denied his license, this case is the latest commentary by the SJC on the Second Amendment and the “suitable person” standard under Mass law. The complete opinion can be read at

http://www.telegram.com/assets/pdf/WT18083311.PDF NRA: The Washington Examiner reported on March 10th that a majority in both the Senate and House — 52 senators, 238 House members — have joined to oppose the Obama administration’s move to ban a popular type of ammo used in the top-selling AR-15 rifle and pistol because it pierces police body armor. In their letter, the senators said that the 5.56 M855 “green tip” cartridge was exempted from bans on armor-piercing rounds. The reason: popular rifle ammo is not used in shootouts with police. They also raised new concerns that the administration appears poised for a much wider ammo ban. Democrats, meanwhile, are circulating a letter in support of the ban of what they call “cop killer” ammo. Read the full article at washingtonexaminer.com Don Gentile (978) 430-6572 [email protected]

PRESIDENT'S REPORT Indoor Range Status The indoor range committee is still working to get the range open. They have reached out to a retired HVAC engineer who has experience with shooting range systems. He is actively involved in helping to diagnose issues with the range system and several changes have been made based on his recommendations. The indoor range committee has done a lot of the labor themselves and they are doing everything possible to make sure that they are working on the items that will get the range completed in the most efficient and timely manner. At this time I will not say anything about an opening date because past dates have come and gone without the range being completed. It will open when the system meets acceptable air standards. It looks like the team is working on the right things. I will keep you informed and hope to have good news in the not too distant future. Once again, thanks for your patience. Membership Committee Changes At their last meeting the board of directors voted by a wide margin to bring the membership function for the club back to MA. Everyone agreed with me that Don Musial has done an outstanding job over the past years and that it will be difficult to replace him. That being said, they felt that in the best interest of the club we needed to bring things back

to MA and have membership handled by a committee who would work together and provide some depth to the membership committee. The BOD felt that we can no longer afford to rely on any one individual to perform the important tasks of handling membership and the call letter for the club. I appointed Charlie Rudolph, Bill Swift, Dave Lapointe, Steve Chaet, John Reynolds and Skip Cakounes to the membership committee. The committee elected Dave to chair the committee. The new committee members and the BOD are looking forward to Don helping them in a smooth transition for the benefit of the club. On behalf of the club I want to thank Don Musial for his many years of hard work and dedication to Danvers Fish and Game Club. The “NEW” dues renewal notice will be sent out shortly. Each member will receive the notice by USPS first class mail. Please fill it out clearly and completely as we will be updating the club database. Return it in the return envelope provided with the proper amount on your check, or you can drop the envelope in the membership box at the main clubhouse. Membership committee members will be on property Wednesday evenings 6:00 pm till 9:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am till 1:00 pm, and Sunday mornings 9:00am till Noon, at the Skeet House. DF&GC Treasurer Treasurer John Stanchfield has notified the board of directors that he will not seek reelection in June. John has served the club as Treasurer and book keeper for 34 years. There has been no opposing candidate in the past. He has been involved in the indoor range project and has served as the voice of Danvers Fish and Game Club in the legal proceedings that are associated with the project. On behalf of the club I want to thank John for his many years of dedication, hard work and loyalty to Danvers Fish and Game club. I wish him good luck and good health in the future. Help Wanted- Office of “Treasurer” John’s replacement will handle the Treasurer’s role but will not be doing the book keeping for the club. Due to the fact that the Treasurer is elected yearly a decision has been made to hire an independent book keeping firm to provide services for the club. We are also discussing whether we should form a

April 2015 6

finance committee to help with financial matters. This will allow us to have continuity and will ensure that our financial success and ability to operate is not reliant upon any one individual and that should a change be needed we will not need to have an election to make the change. John will help with the transition and will work with the newly elected treasurer and the book keeping firm to bring them onboard. If you are interested in running for the office of Treasurer please submit your nomination papers to the nominating committee along with a list of your qualifications. There may be a stipend approved for the person who is elected Treasurer. The bylaws presently define the treasurer’s role as follows: Treasurer – Shall be responsible for all monies paid out of the general fund. He shall report to the Board of Directors and the membership at their monthly meetings all monies taken in or spent. He will co-sign all checks that are paid out of the general fund. His books shall be audited at least once every two years by the Audit Committee. He will be bonded for no less than $500,000. His term shall be for one year and he may be elected for additional terms. Website

Members have been using the newly established support email address, www.support@danversfishand gameclub.com, to resolve issues with the club website, www.danvesfishandgameclub.com. They are reporting that this has been a help. If you are having problems please use the support site to state your problem and provide your name and telephone number so that someone can contact you. Hope this helps.

At the March membership meeting John Reynolds from our IT committee had planned on giving a presentation about the website. Unfortunately there was an equipment issue that didn’t allow that to happen. John will make the presentation at the April meeting. The presentation will also be on the public section of the website so that members can access it there if they have a problem getting into the members only section. People without a member number will still not be able to enter the members’ only section of the site.

Please note that the number of members who have visited our website and signed in as a member is on the rise. This is your site and it can be used to advertise upcoming events, report results of events, provide information about your area, etc. There is also an area where you can advertise sporting equipment that you want to purchase or that you want to sell. Please visit your website. Need for a Quorum At last!! We had 127 members present at the March meeting. Thanks to those who showed up. I think that the raffle for the Ruger probably helped get people out. Thanks Dennis and Ed! Because we had a quorum we were able to conduct a lot of old business. Sorry it took so long but that is what happens when there is a lack of a quorum for five months. Due to a misunderstanding of our somewhat ambiguous bylaws we did not vote on proposed bylaw changes that were approved by the board of directors several months ago. The vote will happen at the next meeting that has a quorum. Please remember that we need a quorum of 125 members to conduct the necessary business of our club. If you have any ideas that you think will help us get a quorum at future meetings please let me know. (We had a suggestion to try a Sunday meeting but we can’t try it without a bylaw change). This is truly important if you have things that you want to get accomplished. We can’t get things done without your involvement. I know it is tough to give up an evening to attend a meeting when it can take some time to finish our business but remember that the longer the time between meetings with a quorum the longer it will take to complete our business when we do have a quorum. Hope to see you all on Thursday, April 9, 2015. We need a quorum!!!!!!! “It is your club” We should be doing what you want us to do. My goal is to make sure that the club is meeting your needs. If it is not please let me know. BeSafe HaveFun Enjoy.Paul McNaughton, President DF&GC 1-781-254-8041 [email protected]

VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT

Vice - president's report /house committee It has been reported that the indoor range committee have taken control of the indoor range construction and are working very hard to complete the necessary work to finish the range, we have a group of members spending a lot of late nights and Saturdays working on the range, this project has caused a lot of tension and discontent within the club. Please give them all your support. We all have an opinion on this topic, but i want to remind all the members there is not going back now, what we need to do is to pull together, stop the bickering and get this project completed! It has been 3 years in a row that the weather has affected the outcome of the valentines dance. We still had it!!! (Another blizzard).. I personally don't believe in cancelling events that we planned in advance due to any circumstances but the good news: we didn't lose any money this time . We did have 26 people attend so we broke even after all expenses. The club is putting together a Rick Larrimore show /a tribute to Rod Stewart and dance for April 11 2015 see the back of the call letter for the info tickets will be pre-paid before the event, cost is $15.00 pp. See VP Manny for tickets for this event 1 617 884 5493, bring your own snacks and drinks, see the show and dance and have fun... Please support your club activities Use of the club facilities are permitted for club functions, that are deemed to be for the betterment of the club and for club members, their family and friends,( activities like : shoots, Dances , shows ,camping, BSA activities , picnic's, fishing derby 's, must be scheduled and approved by the house committee or vice president before hand . Manuel Strassburger Vice-president DF&GC COMMITTEE REPORTS

ARCHERY

There will be a meeting at the archery shack on Wednesday April 1st to determine the date on which we will have the winter league banquet and any other business that needs to be gone over. Bob O’keefe who has done a great job working with the kids from the sheriff’s department over the summer will not be able to run it this year. If anyone is interested in taking this over please give me a call at 978-835-1995 so the details can be worked out. Looking forward to some good weather. Larry Mallia (978-835-1995)

FRONTIERSMAN, TROUT No Report

INDOOR RANGE PISTOL TEAM: The A team has had nine matches as of February 10th and they have won eight and lost one. The match that was lost, was only lost by one point! The B team has not had any matches since the last Call Letter due to snow cancelations and a break in the schedule. They still stand at two wins and eight losses. The handicaps are adjusted three times each season and the final adjustments will be for the matches held on and after February 17th. For the people that have been shooting well, the bar is about to be raised a little higher and fortunately, for those that have not been shooting as well, the bar will be a little lower. With the handicap system, a person’s handicap is added to their raw score, and the handicapped score is capped at 285 unless the person actually shoots over 285. The A team is fortunate to have two excellent shooters, Tony Crisostomo and Mark Catania who have shot raw scores over 285 this season. None of the B team shooters can get close to the 285 with their raw score... so far! The rest of the team shooters are striving to attain the 285 max with their handicap. Keep ‘em in the black.... Dave Abbott & Iggy Kass

OUTDOOR RANGE We will be having a Bowling Pin Rifle Match on Sunday, April 19th starting a 1pm. Mandatory safety briefing will be held before the shoot. The range will be closed for general shooting and may reopen after the shoot. Any questions give Skip Cakounes a call at 617-257-

SKEET/ 5 Stand How about this winter weather? It seems old man winter is hanging on like a bad cold. We have had a bunch of shooting days cancelled because of Snow and Cold but things are looking up, well at least we turned the clocks ahead. We have a lot planned for the upcoming months so keep your ear to the ground for details. We hope to have 5 stand up and running on a regular schedule by May, but weather is the key. Get on the 5 stand e mail list and we will keep you up to date on openings. Send you address to [email protected] put 5 Stand in the subject line. The annual club WORK PARTY will be held on Saturday April 25th Come on down to your favorite shotgun range and help us get spruced up for the summer. Last year we had a great turnout at Skeet and got a ton of stuff done. I’ll even feed you Lunch. The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) has started up again. Mike Ellis and his “Crew” are busy on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings with instruction to the athletes. Stop by and watch some junior shooters “grind them up”.. That’s it for this month, we have plenty of birds and are open 5 days a week, Come on down and get shooting. “Keep The Gun Moving” Dave LaPointe

STEEL PIN RANGE

It was been a Devastating winter to say the least. I know we were forced to take a few months off, but with the better weather coming, means more shooting not necessarily better shooting but more shooting. In the last few months we have bought some new steel targets, some regular steel and some .22 only. REMINDER PINK TARGETS ARE .22 ONLY. So come by and check them out Sign up for the “Steel Pin News Blast“. Just send Chris an email with Steel Pin News Blast on the subject line and put your email address in the body of the email. [email protected] We would like to Thank Tom Potter who reconditioned our shooting benches. They came out great, and now have wheels. Thanks We would also like to thank Rich and Alisha Feustel for the donation of steel targets. We will put them to good use. We will be having a Man on Man Steel Match April 12th @ 9am with a rain date of the 19th. 3 Classes. Open, Stock and revolver. Must have a minimum of 5 shooter for a class. 9mm or larger, No mag limit, $5 per gun. Course of fire – Steel rack with pins and plates and one knock down target as final target. The final targets will overlap, so whosever target is on the bottom wins (if it comes to that) Winners will square off with winners and losers vs losers. Questions call Bryan @ 978-828-7387 Shooting paper is good but shooting steel is better! Chris Zullo, Bryan Campilio

TRAP Shooting has slowed down a bit. Shooting in 10 Degree weather isn't fun, unless you count Trap Winter League. 33 hardy shooters have braved the cold and snow to shoot every Wednesday night. The pot-luck suppers keep them coming !!!!!

As for Open Shooting, we have been open per the posted schedules but many members are waiting for warmer weather--and I don't blame them.

Here is a Winter League update....Bill Fiore is High Overall for the League. In Class AA, Jamie Zarella has a 22.3 in Singles, Jay Coimbra is the leader in Class A handicap at 20.3. Tony Tieri has a handicap score of 18.0 in class B. In Class C,

April 2015 9

Jim Ciman leads with an 18.3 for HOA. Pete Alywin is second at 18.1. The Class D HOA leader is Bill LaChance with a 17.1; close behind is Jeremy Nelson at 17.0. The Winter League banquet is planned for April 22nd at 6:00 pm at the Trap house. A Prime Rib dinner with all the fixings will be served and awards will be passed out to the winners. The clocks have been turned forward, the Red Sox have started Spring training and I am sure that the Spring season can't be far behind. I'm sure we will be seeing larger numbers of shooters each week. That's a good thing !! That's it from here. Barry B , Chris Z , John C and Murf

Junior Division Jason Sample, Club Member and former Junior Division Champion, NRA Distinguished Expert, has attained his NRA Competitive Rifle Coach credentials and is ready to assist his Dad, Stan Sample and John Rowen with teaching new shooters when the Indoor Range is operational and Junior Division resumes.
