BUFFALO’S CHANGING HISTORY

On Thursday the Chamber of Commerce had their monthly gathering at Buffalo. It was an interesting mix of all sorts of folks, hoping to network for the advancement of their particular business or interest.

It was a great opportunity to share a bit of our history, information about our founders and their origins and about some of our members who have gone on to accomplish great things. Sheila Brewer is the historian of the Buffalo Presbyterian Women and a native of Scotland, and consequently the resident authority on all things Presbyterian here at Buffalo. The following are just a few of the facts she taught us.

Did you know that the bulk of our founders came from a single location in Scotland, the Isle of Skye? Did you know they came to North Carolina primarily for economic reasons, land? Did you know, that as an immigrant community, even after thirty years they still offered both an English and a Gaelic language worship service? Did you know, that originally, there would have been no stained glass, no crosses, no candles, no flags, and no statues in any Presbyterian sanctuary, as John Knox, the founder of Presbyterianism in Scotland, would not have allowed any symbols in a sanctuary?

Over time, some things change. In nearly every Presbyterian Church in America, we now have stained glass, crosses, candles, flags, and even statues. In nearly every Presbyterian Church in America we recognize and acknowledge secular celebrations, like Mother’s and Father’s Day, Girl Scout Sunday, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving.

Over time, others things have not changed. In every Presbyterian Church the world over, we worship only the one triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We recognize only one baptism and only two sacraments, baptism and communion.

Thanks be to God for the courage to change and the wisdom to know what should remain unchanged.

Grace and Peace, Paul

1940s BUFFALO WOMEN

HOMECOMING SUNDAY MAY 4TH

Look for additions to our history display in the Fellowship Hall on Homecoming Sunday. We will show a photograph of a group of women of Buffalo taken in the 1940s. What is wonderful about this photo is that we actually have the names of everyone in the group. This was sent to us by Dr. Jane Carswell Roberts who last year sent us the Buffalo quilt from the 1940s.

We have some additions to our scrapbooks gleaned from the many clippings, photos, and other items collected by the late Edna Nunnery. One photo shows several men of the church hard at work constructing the Education Building in 1955.

A reminder: if you have items of interest pertaining to Buffalo, please consider donating them to the church or allowing us to make copies of them for our archives. Sheila Brewer Church Historian

EASTER CROSS OF FLOWERS Please get your prettiest blooms ready for our Cross of Flowers on Easter Sunday, April 20th, as we joyously celebrate our Lord's Resurrection and our Redemption.

Ladies Council met on Tuesday, March 4th due to freezing weather. We discussed the upcoming Ash Wednesday Service and if you missed it, that’s a shame. As the choir sang “Surely the Goodness of the Lord is in This Place,” you could feel God’s Spirit. The music was beyond beautiful. We had 6 to 8 guest ministers here, of which several delivered an inspiring message as we go into the Lent Season. Also, it was a great opportunity to see friends from other churches and worship with them. We are enjoying our new bathrooms. Kathy Bridges is doing a beautiful job of adding some décor. Kathy is so dedicated to our décor needs and it is much appreciated by all! As always, we encourage all women to attend circle. Second Monday of each month, Mary Lou Campbell Circle at 2:00 p.m. or Sunshine Circle at 6:30 p.m. We have a very good Bible study, share our concerns and ideas, and fellowship one with another. It is a great way to strengthen your faith and get to know other ladies in the congregation. Easter is coming and again we will have the Flower Cross. Make plans now to be with us for that special Easter Sunday, and don’t forget to bring flowers for the cross. We will recognize our college students this month with a card and gift card to help them along. We have five college students in our congregation. If you don’t already, please come and worship with us! Join Buffalo’s warm and loving family. We would be so proud to have you. God Bless, Pat Setzer Interim Moderator for March

The North Carolina Presbyterian Historical Society will hold its 50th Anniversary Celebration and Spring Tour in eastern Guilford and Alamance counties on Friday and Saturday, April 25-26. The varied program includes the historic churches and cemeteries of Bethel, Stony Creek, and Springwood; Peacehaven Farm for special-needs adults, based on L’Arche communities; the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Historic Site; and First Presbyterian of Burlington, where we will have our Birthday Celebration! After lunch, Dr. Carole Troxler will speak on “Presbyterian Roles in the Regulator Movement.” Please join us for a fascinating two days! Registration is only $25. The schedule, registration form, and address are on our website at www.ncphsociety.org or contact Program Chair Sam Martin at (910) 428-4165.

We need several Buffalo members to stand outside and serve as guides and greeters. Please contact me if you are interested in serving in this manner.

Discussion of “The Sermon On the Mount” led by Paul through Easter Sunday has begun and is being well attended. We invite you to join us Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We know you will be blessed through this study.

We are planning a weekday morning Bible Study focusing on the Book of Mark in response to a suggestion from one of you. Keep those suggestions coming! It is expected to start sometime after Easter with Rev. Shields leading the group. Watch for more information!

The Christian Education Committee is exploring using a beach theme for Vacation Bible School with stories around the Sea of Galilee –perhaps using — ”Surfing with the Savior.” We would be grateful for any help or ideas you might offer. We expect to firm up the dates at our next monthly meeting.

We have recently been blessed by a donation of several books. Although we do have a library located upstairs over the Women’s Parlor from which you can borrow at any time, we will be making several of these newly donated books available in the church entryway for you to borrow.

As we have mentioned before, any of the committee members would be glad to listen to your ideas for new programming. You are also invited to join our committee. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. Members: Dr. David Ciliberto, Jackie Frie, Penny Shields, Jean Wilberg, and Rev. Paul Shields

Jean Wilberg, Chairman Christian Education Committee

THE MOST CARING CHILD…

*************************************************

Teacher Debbie Moon's first graders were discussing a

picture of a family. One little boy in the picture had a

different hair color than the other members. One of

her students suggested that he was adopted. A little

girl said, ' I know all about adoption, I was adopted...

‘‘What does it mean to be adopted?’ asked another child.

'It means’, said the girl, 'that you grew in your mommy's

heart instead of her tummy!’

*************************************************

On my way home one day, I stopped to watch a Little

League baseball game that was being played in a park

near my home. As I sat down behind the bench on the

first-base line, I asked one of the boys what the score

was ‘We’re behind 14 to nothing, ' he answered with a

smile. 'Really, ' I said. 'I have to say you don't look

very discouraged.' 'Discouraged? ', the boy asked with

a puzzled look on his face... 'Why should we be

discouraged? We haven't been up to bat yet. '

*************************************************

Whenever I'm disappointed with my spot in life, I stop

and think about little Jamie Scott. Jamie was trying

out for a part in the school play. His mother told me

that he’d set his heart on being in it, though she feared

he would not be chosen. On the day the parts were

awarded, I went with her to collect him after school.

Jamie rushed up to her, eyes shining with pride and

excitement. 'Guess what, Mom, 'he shouted, and then

said those words that will remain a lesson to me..... ‘I’ve

been chosen to clap and cheer.'
