The 2013 Small Business Appreciation Breakfast will be held May 17 at 7:30 am at the Comfort Suites Hotel and Conference Center. This year’s guest speaker is Rob O’Brian, President of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. O’Brian graduated Magna Cum Laude from Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and minors in journalism and political science. His civic activities include President of the Joplin Business and Industrial Development Corporation and Vice-President of the Joplin Industrial Development Authority.

Since the May 22, 2011 tornado that devastated one-third of Joplin, O’Brian has been at the forefront of the recovery efforts, amassing resources for the community to ensure that businesses can rebuild and thrive. His recognitions include Certified Economic Developer (CEcD), 2005 Missouri Economic Developer of the Year, 2007 Missourian Award, 2007 Distinguished Eagle Scout and the 2012 Governor’s Award for Economic Development Career Service.

Small businesses represent more than 99 percent of all U.S. employers, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. A small business is defined as an independent enterprise with no more than 500 employees. We encourage all small businesses to join us on May 17. Small businesses can receive up to four complimentary tickets. Although tickets are complimentary, reservations must be made to ensure adequate food preparation. To RSVP, contact Belinda Colwell, Administrative Assistant, at [email protected] or 319-208-0042.

Career Exploration Day April 11 will mark the 3rd Advanced Manufacturing Career Exploration Day. These events, held twice a year, allow high school students in Des Moines County to get a close up look at careers available right here in Southeast Iowa.

This spring we have expanded to include six manufacturers: American Ordnance, CNH, Dresser-Rand, Doran & Ward Printing Company, Hawkeye Pedershaab and Snyder’s-Lance, Inc.

Ninety-eight high school students, freshmen through seniors, will have the opportunity to explore one of 25 careers in Advanced Manufacturing. Seats are filled on a first come first served basis. The 3 hour sessions give students an overview of the business careers available and a look into the everyday responsibilities of their selected career.

The goal of the career exploration day is to increase awareness of jobs available in the area as well as the skill sets and education needed to obtain those jobs. To date, 149 students have taken advantage of this opportunity.

The Greater Burlington Partnership invites you to “Be a Marketing Ninja,” a no cost event for members. These mini sessions are held the last Tuesday of the month over the noon hour at the Greater Burlington Partnership in the Winegard Board Room; you are encouraged to brown bag it, listen, learn and share. Business owners, marketing staff, human resources and administrative staff are encouraged to attend.

This month’s “Be A Marketing Ninja” is rescheduled from February and will be held Tuesday, April 30 at 12 pm on “Mobile Websites & QR Codes” with Dennis Fraise and Tim Larson, the cdot3 team.

RSVP by April 26 to Belinda Colwell, Administrative Assistant, at [email protected] or 319-208-0042.

The March 2013 edition of Site Selection Magazine was an important publication for our community. The trade magazine, which appropriately caters to those corporate decision makers in the site location business, annually ranks cities and states across the country in what is called The Governor’s Cup. This special feature uses data gathered from a variety of sources to measure economic development success. It then aggregates listings of the best performing cities and states across the country based upon that information.

Greater Burlington made the list this year. In fact, our community ranked in the top 30- the highest ranked micropolitan in Iowa and of any surrounding state. The ranking is something in which we should take great pride.

A micropolitan is a geographically-bound statistical area with an urban core of between 10,000 – 50,000 residents. Technically, the statistical area can include portions of adjacent counties that feed a healthy percentage of workers to the urban core. There are more than a dozen across the state and nearly 600 across the U.S. Two other Iowa communities broke into the top 100.

Conway Data is the research company responsible for aggregating the data. The key to making the list is really quite simple: generate as many significant economic development projects as possible within a calendar year. There were four projects last year that fit the criteria: the completed building expansion at KPI Concepts, Winegard Company’s acquisition and redevelopment of the Fairway Shopping Center, the sale of the fourth shell building, and the Iowa Fertilizer project.

Unfortunately, Conway Data’s methodology used to establish its rankings is somewhat narrow. The research and subsequent rankings did not incorporate the more than $107 million in construction permits issued last year in Burlington and West Burlington. It did not count the construction of the new Klein Center, the completion of the BNSF bridge, the opening of several new franchises, the debut of the Capitol Theater, the completion of new upper-story apartments, the launch of several new small businesses, the additional product lines added at multiple companies, or the record growth of the tourism industry.

Few micropolitans have earned comparable bragging rights.

Sure, our communities face many challenges, and our local economy still has a long way to go. However, our private sector investors deserve an ‘atta-boy.’ Faith and confidence in our local market made all the difference in 2012.

It is not in the culture of this community to boast about its accomplishments. Once in a while, however, it is okay to celebrate success.

Congratulations, Greater Burlington. You have earned the right to declare yourselves ‘A Top 30 Micropolitan.’ How will you creatively use this slogan over the next 11 months?

Greater Burlington: A Top 30 Micropolitian

Just a Thought More than 600 students

from area schools gathered at Southeastern Community College in mid-March for the 5th and 8th Grade Career Fairs. These fairs are hosted annually by the Future Workforce Committee of Greater Burlington Partnership.

Each career fair lasts about three hours, and all Des Moines County Schools’ 5th and 8th grade classes are invited to participate. Students learn about six different career pathways: Agriscience, Arts/Communication, Family/Human Services, Health Sciences, Business/Marketing, and Engineering. Eighth graders attended an additional session on Apprenticeships.

More than 30 business people volunteered time out of their day to talk about their careers and the education and skills needed for success in their careers with these 5th and 8th grade students. We greatly appreciate their time and effort in helping to educate students on career paths available to them.

“Congratulations, Greater Burlington. You have earned the right to declare yourselves ‘A Top 30 Micropolitan.’

How will you creatively use this slogan over the next 11 months?”

Scholarships for Real World Experiences For 2013, the Future Workforce Committee of the Greater Burlington Partnership is proud to announce the opportunity to apply for one of three scholarships to Business Horizons, a program of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation that actively engages students in several activities:

• Developing a product • Making financial decisions (via a business simulation) about their operations • Creating a marketing plan and a television infomercial • Preparing and delivering a 10-minute formal presentation to investors • Participating in a tradeshow

Business Horizons is a hands-on, action oriented, live-in summer program July 15 - 19 at Central College in Pella for high school students who want to learn what the future holds.

The scholarship is open to current high school students residing in and attending school in Des Moines County. The scholarship will cover the student’s registration fee, which includes meals, housing and all program materials. To apply, students should see their high school counselor.

Students and families are responsible for their transportation to and from the week long program. This course also has an optional college credit of 1 hour, transferable to any post-secondary institution. Should a student desire to receive this credit, it is at their expense.

In addition, any student participating in Business Horizons who applies, is admitted and chooses to attend Central will be guaranteed a minimum of $12,000 in Central College scholarship assistance, renewable for all four years.

If you are like most business owners, you have questions about what the health care law means for your business and for you.

Some parts of the law are in effect now, while others will phase in over several years. This ‘Lunch & Learn’ session will present an overview of the provisions within the health care law that may have the most immediate impact on your business and your employees.

During the session you will receive helpful information from your Chamber of Commerce, AARP and a local benefits administration expert who will acquaint you with the basics of the law including its benefits and challenges as they affect most small business owners.

Plan to attend on Tuesday, May 7, 12-1 pm at the Greater Burlington Partnership in the Winegard Board Room. RSVP to Belinda Colwell, Administrative Assistant, at [email protected] or 319-208-0039.

This ‘Lunch and Learn’ is a no cost event and a benefit of membership in the Greater Burlington Partnership.

Des Moines County Social Assistance Programs Partnership Intern Mark Foster is compiling a truth-seeking, nonpartisan social assistance research project. This report includes statistics in regards to the programs and testimonials from various government officials. The expansion of the food assistance program is one that has made state and nationwide news.

In 2002, 9.4% of the population was given $3,685,325 in coupon allotments for the year. By 2012, 21.7% of the population was given $12,975,182 in coupon allotments.

While the safety net of social assistance programs such as food assistance is necessary, Des Moines County needs to examine the reason as to why our levels are substantially higher than both the state (13.4%) and national (15%) levels. President Ronald Reagan said, “We should measure welfare’s success by how many people leave welfare, not by how many are added.” For more information on the food assistance program, go to www.greaterburlington.com.

Midway through the second year of Greater Burlington Leadership, it has proven to be a powerful experience for all involved. “I would recommend Greater Burlington Leadership to anyone who has a passion to learn more about their community and is interested in being part of making Greater Burlington a better place to live and work,” said Joel Steiner, Hawkeye Pedershaab.

The 2012-2013 class has experienced many thought-provoking sessions, including panels on the housing shortage in the area and what it takes to land a project like the Iowa Fertilizer Company or a national chain. “The curriculum is well thought out and provides an inspiring look at what ‘community’ and ‘leadership’ really mean,” said Chad Palmer, Energyficient. “It has taught me much about leading with leaders.”

As the 2012-2013 class looks toward graduation in May, you may be interested in participating in next year’s program. Nominations of candidates interested in Greater Burlington Leadership are accepted year-round but must be received by May 15 to be eligible for the next year’s class; self-nominations are encouraged. The final application will be due June 15. To learn more about Greater Burlington Leadership, visit www.greaterburlington.com/chamber_gbl.cfm.

Greater Burlington Leadership is an intensive professional development series designed to strengthen leadership skills by empowering and educating people who live, work or have interest in Greater Burlington. The series is presented by the Greater Burlington Partnership.

LeadershipProves to Be a Success

Greater Burlington Leadership class participants are charged with working on a group project that will benefit the community either through service hours, a financial impact or both. As the participants brainstormed, their focus was narrowed to three options which were presented to the committee of volunteers.

During the Education session in November, staff from Aldo Leopold Middle School and a volunteer from Kiwanis presented on the After School Program. By the end of the day, it was unanimous that the proceeds from the group project be donated to enhance and expand the Middle School After School Programs.

The Shamrock Shuffle was born with hopes of 350 participants and being able to donate $7,000 to the programs. The luck of the Irish struck, and over 900 runners and walkers gathered in Crapo Park for the fun-filled color run. With the help of sponsorships covering all expenses, proceeds benefiting the After School Programs are expected to exceed $14,000.

“Working on the required group project has been a leadership skill building experience for me,” stated Amy Burkhart, Great River Hospice. “In most project situations, there is a pre-determined chain of command. Working with a group of peers and navigating through differences in opinions to get to good decisions has been an excellent experience.”

Greater Burlington Leadership appreciates the tremendous support of the numerous sponsors and volunteers who helped make the Sharmrock Shuffle a success.

Slideshows and videos have been uploaded of the Shamrock Shuffle and can be viewed at www.greaterburlington.com, You Tube and on Facebook.

Partnership’s Annual Blood DriveIn 2000, the Chamber of Commerce held their first mobile blood drive at the previous office on Jefferson Street. “That was the first time I donated blood, and I have been donating ever since,” stated Kay Sackville Breuer, Vice President. “I just reached a milestone; I have donated six gallons. Donating blood is something I can do to give back, and it doesn’t cost anything, only about 45 minutes of my day.”

The Greater Burlington Partnership is sponsoring a month-long blood drive at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center at 3407 Agency Street, Burlington, April 1 – 30. As an extra incentive, all presenting donors will be entered in a drawing to win two 1-night passes to Burlington Steamboat Days.

Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is the exclusive provider of blood and blood products to Great River Medical Center and all area hospitals. To schedule an appointment, call 800-747-5401 or sign-up at www.bloodcenter.org.
