Ministerial Musings ~ April, 2013:
A Verbal Collage of Insightful Sayings: A Tapestry
Last Saturday morning I opened the Chair’s breakfast with
a reflection I would like to share, in light of the presumed
advent of Spring, and in celebration of the Easter event that
we will all share together:
Is there enough Silence for the Word to be heard?
“In many parts of the country, this is the season [in which]
we begin to see tiny miracles of creation becoming visible:
little tips of green as the early bulbs push up through the
ground, tender green buds bursting from bare branches of
trees… and we begin to feel creative stirrings in our souls
right along with nature. How do we experience those stir-
rings? What exactly is creativity? As we go into silence
with the questions and feelings we may have, we remember
that we are called to be co-creators with the Divine. We
don’t need to paint a masterpiece, or write a best-seller,
though for some that happens. What we do need are ways
to express our own, personal, unique, creative yearnings.
Listen carefully, dear friends: the answers will begin to
flow, and we will begin to bloom right along with those
spring flowers! “ Friends of Silence, March 2013, Vol. XXVI, no. 3
So, watching, listening, waiting – to, with and/or in Silence
allows for the Word to bear fruit in our souls. Listening for
and to the call to be co-creators with the Divine in the liv-
ing of our lives… what does that look like, how does that
sound? If we can embrace the idea that we are the tiny
buds, the tips of green, what will be look like, be ~ when in
full bloom? ...continued

Ministerial Musings ~ April, 2013:
A Verbal Collage of Insightful Sayings: A Tapestry
...continued from page 1
“Unless we are creators, we are not fully alive,”
says one of my favorite authors and theological
role models, Madeleine L’Engle. “Remember the
root word of humble is human is the same:
humus, earth. We are dust. We are created; it is
God who made us and not we ourselves. But we
were made to be co-creators with our maker.” (from Walking on Water)
We have a unique opportunity here at The Con-
gregational Church of Plainville, UCC for we are
indeed beginning new days and year ahead – new
building, new projects, new life! What great and
small things will we do and be in God’s name and
service? We are all blessed with the ability to be
successful co-creators with God. See here:

Getting Ready!
On March 16th
we had a wonderful and energetic group of volunteers
who cleaned, painted, assembled and repaired items previously stored
away. These will be used in the “restored to new” classrooms. It was a
successful day of work and many hands made this task lighter and
certainly more enjoyable… thank-you to all for your help!! It is excit-
ing to see that our classrooms will be finished soon and we can repopu-
late them!
Project Charmer
Pink, White, Purple, Green, Blue, Yellow, Red and Orange…yes, it’s the
latest trend in horseshoes! Well - - Trail markers for the Hidden Acres
Therapeutic Riding Center. Our children painted these good luck
charms on March 17th
and will be putting them up at the farm on April
27th
. So, save that date and stay tuned for further details and watch
for a sign-up sheet.
Mission Collection Dates
On the first Sunday of every month we collect coins for Project
Charmer. The next item on deck to purchase is a two-step-mount. This
necessary piece of equipment is a sturdy set of steps onto which a rider
climbs before climbing aboard a horse.
Prayers for Lent
Each Sunday before we dismiss the children to their classes we gather
for circle time. During this Lenten season, together we read aloud the
40 Prayers that the children wrote. This is a ‘normally’ special time but
during this Holy season it is particularly poignant. We are impressed by
the insight of the children and are comforted by their prayers. These
timeless messages grow more meaningful each day. The children are
wise beyond their years.
Palm Sunday
On this day the church school presented a 2nd
hour program, called “At
Your Feet” based upon two contemporary Christian songs, “At Your
Feet” by Casting Crowns and “Live Like That” by Sidewalk Prophets. This
was yet another example of why we continue to be impressed by our
students.
Good Friday Prayer Vigil
On this day, many of you journeyed with Jesus, remembering him on
the day of his crucifixion. We thank you for your time spent in the re-
flective mood of the day. An added element to the Vigil room was a
children’s corner with inspirational books and a ritualistically
appropriate activity reinforcing day’s tone.

Easter Sunday
March 31st - this is a family Sunday however, the Nursery is open.
A Poem: “May joy and love spread land to land, Linked heart to
heart and hand to hand!"
Scripture Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do
not see.”
Earth Day – April 21st
Keep bringing in those recycled items for our ‘Recycle Rainbow’, you will
find bags to place your items in, downstairs in the church school office.
We want re-useable materials to make the mural; such as cardboard and
colorful scraps.
Summer Church School Coordinator
We are still looking for that special person (or persons) to coordinate
the summer program. Could it be you???
Youth Sunday
On the second Sunday in June our children will provide the entire Sun-
day service. This is an important day in the year of the church school; it
is our turn to give back to the Congregation with a special service and
message. There are several important components that make up a Sun-
day service, and while it is April we are already showing our children the
different aspects during our gathering-circle. Remember: It’s their day
to shine!!
Very special thanks go to Steve Guglietta for taking such thought-
provoking and deeply meaningful photographs of the children (all of
whom felt the moments) and then matching those pics together with
music so beautifully. We continue to maintain our theme of “Faith
Alive” and to that end, work together to create and nurture faith
inspired projects. If you missed the video, please see Pauline or Suzanne
because we’d love to share it with you. Here are a few words from the
two songs:
“Jesus, Jesus, at Your feet
Oh, to dwell and never leave
Jesus, Jesus, at Your feet
There is nowhere else for me”
“People pass, and even if they don’t know my name
Is there evidence that I’ve been changed; when they see me do they see you?
I want to live like that, and give it all I have, so that everything I say and do –
points to you…”

rAise the roof: Not your parents’ capital campaign
Now and for the FINAL time, please save THESE dates!!!!!
April 21st ~ Our first coffee hour in our newly finished Kelsey Hall will be held
on April 21st. Please come and be a part of this “great unveiling.” During our
Second Hour Program, we will review all that has been accomplished on your
behalf over the last two years in our new space and preview what our capital
campaign will target. There will be a power point presentation, brochures,
handouts and general informational session at this Second Hour program.
Child care will be provided and hot dogs will be available for a modest (FUNd-
raising) price following worship, so children can have something substantial to
hold them over while parents listen to this important information. All of this
leads up to…….
OUR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF:
4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday April 28th, 2013!
Your capital campaign committee is working very diligently to make these two
events informative, fun, effective and lucrative on behalf of this community of
faith. Please plan to come and be a part of this historic undertaking in the life
and history of The Congregational Church of Plainville, UCC.
Food, programming and supervision are available for all children. PARENTS,
think about it! A night out to learn what is to come in the life of the church……
A wonderful, catered dinner in our new space…Children fed, and kept safely
busy so you can focus and have adult conversation…All of this early enough in
the evening so that you can then just get them home and to bed!
Please mark your calendars. Come: plan to attend, fill out your “evite” or call
the office to reserve your space, and help this church community make history!
Butter Braids - a SWEET success!!! Thank you to all who purchased
Butter Braids - we raised $540.00 for our Church!
Lia Sophia - a BIG thank you to all who supported this FUNdraiser! $600
was rAised; and will be split between rAise the roof and Christian Education!
Oh What a 2nd Hour Program You Missed!
The Stewardship Committee’s ongoing “5 T” education effort continued in the month of March and focused on T for Tissue. In collaboration with the Mission-Social Action, Diaconate, and Evangelism & Church Growth committees, the Stewardship Committee provided a speaker for the second hour program that was held in the Music and Green rooms as well as the sanctuary.
After an expanded coffee hour, we were blessed to host Lisa Slinsky from the New England Organ Bank in the sanctuary. Lisa very tenderly described the process that her family experienced as they worked through her husband’s wish to be an organ/tissue donor in 2002 after a catastrophic medical event.
The New England Organ Bank describes that gift in this way: the kidney transplant saved a life and freed the recipient from dialysis treatments that take from 12 to 15 hours per week. The pancreas transplant freed a diabetic from daily insulin injections. The cornea transplant restored lost sight. The bone transplant was used to repair joints. The donated skin provided a temporary covering and protection from pain and infection for several burn victims. The donated heart valves were used for someone whose life was threatened by disease or malfunctioning valves. The saphenous veins were used in reconstructive procedures and help avoid amputation.
In total, this man’s single gift, enabled by his courageous family, directly impacted the life of 27 individuals. Please consider your potential gift to others as an organ donor. Talk about this with your family. You, too, can give the gift of life, again and again.
There are a number of ways you to give this gift of life.
The best and easiest way to become a donor is to sign up online. Just go to www.DonateLifeNewEngland.org and register.
You can go to your local DMV office and register. Your registration will include you in Connecticut’s Donor Registry - which is legal consent for both organ and tissue donation.
Carrying a signed donor card is another way to indicate your consent for donation. These can be obtained from your local DMV office as well.
SHARE your decision to donate with your family so that your family knows about your interest in becoming an organ and tissue donor.

UnitedScrip – Ongoing Fundraiser
A BIG thanks for shopping with UnitedScrip! This is our church’s ongoing fundraiser
for the general fund. Please plan purchases ahead of time. Throughout 2013, continue
purchasing UnitedScrip gift cards.
In 2013, please continue to pick up UnitedScrip order forms in the narthex or Music
Room. Simply check which national stores, restaurants, and gas stations that you fre-
quent, then make a check out to our church and give the order form with a check to
Carol after church. Be sure to purchase your store/gift cards for all your normal shop-
ping needs. You will receive the full face value of the gift card and receive IRS recogni-
tion for a charitable donation, and our church will keep a percentage of the face value.
It’s win-win for all!
Winter storm Charlotte, which caused church to be cancelled on Feb. 10th, caused us to
not place scrip orders, and therefore to not receive scrip profit for one week. The Febru-
ary profit above is for only 3 weeks – very good!

who participated: Armata-Wazorko, Bamberg, Blanchard, Boiczyk, Borry,
Drachenberg, Hodge, Hoxie, Johnson, Kordes, Letendre, Levesque, Lindenmuth,
Mailhot, Mazurek, Michaud, Pershken, Peterson, Potter, Seeds, Steele, Zapatka,

Spring Clean - Up
The annual Spring Clean-up is scheduled for Saturday April 20, 2013. We welcome all able-bodied church members to come and work inside or outside the church for two hours. We will be washing windows and woodwork, cleaning gutters, sweeping, raking, mowing and mulching. Due to a light turnout in the fall the courtyard is in need of extra attention this spring.
We hope it will be your pleasure to work with us for a couple hours. The trustees will provide coffee and donuts at 9AM and all indoor cleaning supplies. Trustees will be on hand until 3PM.
If you want to work outdoors, bring a favorite rake, blower, pressure washer, or other tool to support the work you would like to perform.
Thanks for helping us keep the church looking beautiful!

SPOTLIGHT ON....
A Note From the Church Office:
The office will be closed on the following Wednesdays: April 3rd and April 10th and open
on Thursday April 4th. Then, it is back to normal schedule!
We have inherited a firm core value, embracing “hospitality”
as a gift, whether giver or receiver, from our Judeo-Christian
heritage. Inherited from a time when welcoming someone into
your home for respite and a meal might mean life or death, literally, - to now, when it
can mean the same, more often spiritually speaking.
We have found, too, that there is an art both in offering someone hospitality - and, that
there is also hospitality in receiving what is offered. That can be a mind-bender: to
graciously and gratefully receive what is offered can be its own kind of hospitality.
Our Evangelism and Church Growth Committee coordinates coffee hours for us - and
they are indeed, for us, a third sacrament: sacred time when we can gather and catch up
with one another; sacred space where we can hold a hand, shed a tear, celebrate a joy
and be community together.
So, for those who make the call and for those who respond, thank you. This “simple”
act means so much in the life of this community ~
Matthew 10:42 ~ "And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little
ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward."
In congregational tradition there are two sacraments: baptism and communion. But it
seems there is a third: Coffee Hour. I am not belittling the sacraments. It simply seems
that Coffee Hour is another indicator of communion and belonging. Coffee Hour can be
ho-hum or a vibrant, boisterous and truly intergenerational extension of the service
where people are standing, sitting, eating, talking, reading, signing up for opportunities.
Often I yell "Last Call!" just to get them out so we can finally go home. You can't fake a
spiritual presence.
Members gently invite visitors for coffee and cake before they can slip out the door.
Many decline at first, feeling good to be invited, though not quite ready or able to par-
ticipate, but they usually return for church and fellowship.
In baptism God comes to us. In communion we come to God. In Coffee Hour we come
to each other. We break a different bread and share a different cup than we do in com-
munion. We use different water than we do in baptism. We touch the same souls in a dif-
ferent way. Do you want to feel "a part of" rather than "apart from" the congregation?
Do diligence to Coffee Hour and watch the multiplication of the loaves and dishes.
Prayer Be with and guide us in all we say and do, and in all the ways in which we gather to
know, celebrate and honor you. Amen.
